What to Pack for the Hospital

Having a baby? Then don’t miss Whitney’s Bump Month post today on Zulily’s blog: 7 things you need for the hospital when having a baby.  I’ll give you a hint… the list doesn’t include diapers.

What’s on it? Go over and see.

What’s on your must-bring list?

Little’s Snow-Stylin’ Stride Rite Boots

Little’s feet are small. So small, that it took many stores turning me away saying, “sorry, we don’t make snow boots that small” to make me give up on letting her go out to play. So sad for Little.

SNOW4

But last week on the way out of the mall, I popped into Stride Rite, asking them to measure her again. 4 1/2 made her big enough, finally, for a pair of boots! The salesperson recommended waterproofing spray, which I was quick to snatch up, and we ran home to spray.

She practiced wearing her Wallaroo boots the past few days, even wearing them dancing at music class with a cute little mini skirt and tights. Today, she tried them out in the ice on the driveway and in the snow. While she took some slides, there were no spills. These rubber-soled shoes had amazing traction and support for her ankles, and she stayed upright the entire time while playing on the ice.

I was also concerned about her little toes getting cold, and snow working its way into the socks while playing in the snow. There were no complaints and when we finally came in about an hour later, her toes were dry, and fairly warm.

The Wallaroo boots are on sale at Stride Rite. If you’re little is dying to go outside and experience the snow, race to the mall and grab these. (Just make sure you spray them with NAME first. It takes 24 hours to set in, but she’ll be a snow-bunny by the weekend.)

Britax Recalls Chaperone Infant Seat

I reviewed this seat for Mommies with Style last year. We loved the seat for the size and comfort. Alas. There’s been a recall. If you’re the owner of a Chaperone, please follow this link: http://www.chaperoneseatrecall.com/ for more information.

Gerber Yogurt Blends: The No-Need-for-Refrigeration Yogurts

Gerber Yogurt Blends

Gerber Yogurt Blends

A lot has changed since Big was born. (I know. I keep saying that, right? I feel like such a grandma!) But it has. Its been seven years and I shake my head, every now and then, thinking about the changes.

Like food.  When Big was a toddler, I drove to Babies R Us (this is before I ordered with Amazon Prime, charging through my phone in seconds and having items arrive, shipped to my doorstep two days later) and purchased about 5 insulated pouches and probably 10 ice packs. I had to keep everything dairy cold cold cold. Especially yogurt. Because bad, warm yogurt? That goes in the trash.

Right?

Not anymore. Fast forward to a few weeks ago while I was shopping the baby aisle and I see Yogurt  Blends. On a shelf. In the middle of the store. NOT in the dairy case. What on Earth? Of course, I bought it. I had to. I couldn’t help but be curious about this stuff.

So. Unrefrigerated yogurt? Its good. Its warm. It tastes a little like pudding in flavors of banana, strawberry and peach. (Yes, I did sneak a taste while Little was distracted. Which wasn’t easy because she really likes it.)

OMG. My life has changed. I know, sounds silly, right? But now when I pack up for meetings or a playdate or a Mommy and Me class I can just toss a Yogurt Blend in my bag and not have to worry about packing cold yogurt into an insulated pouch with an ice pack. Is it that big of a deal? Probably not. But. Really. I’m a mom of 3. And Gerber Yogurt Blends has created one less step for me. And I love that.

Also, new from Gerber are Smart Sips, healthy flavored milk drinks in boxes that don’t have to be kept cold. Again. Making life easier for a mom of three kids. (And I think I need to mention that I do, indeed, snack on these now myself.)

While I’ve been buying Yogurt Blends for a few months now, they recently supplied Mommies with Style with samples of Gerber Yogurt Blends and Gerber Smart Sips for review.

I stole my son’s DSi to play Cooking Mama 3

Yes, its true. Guilty as charged. But I’ve had a copy of Cooking Mama 3: Shop & Chopsitting in my gift closet for months, waiting to be played. And while Big found opportunities to play his favorites (which include Petz Dolphinz Encounter, New Super Mario Bros. Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga), Cooking Mama 3 remained contained in plastic wrap, though, knowing Mama, anxious to get out.

I’ve never tried Cooking Mama 1 or 2, or the wii version, but I’ve always heard great things. So, like most people, I was expecting a three-quel to be not so hot. But its really fun! I love manipulating controls to quickly create a meal. Its hugely addicting, a great time waster, of course. But totally something that I need when I need to destress and get away from real life. And, because I do love cooking, this is really, really fun for me.

The game has recipes and lots of mini games. My favorite is when you mix it up and create your own recipes, because that’s what I like to do in the kitchen, and this one makes you actually win. Which is a lot better than the kids reactions. Its also really fun to the do the shopping. Seriously, you’re having fun in the grocery store. Against a clock you have to race to shop, but if you bump into another person in the store, you have to do a mini game. Which hurts your time but is so fun its totally worth it.

Now here’s my problem: Big saw me playing Cooking Mama 3. And he’s already better at it than me.

I received a copy of Cooking Mama 3 as a sample, as well as Petz Dolphinz Encounter.

Tiny Prints for First Birthday Invitations, Thank You Notes and Return Address Labels

Butterfly Bliss 1st Birthday Invitation from Tiny Prints

If there’s one company I know I can count on for quality, its Tiny Prints. So when it comes time to order for announcements, greetings or birthdays, I instantly go there.

This time, it was Little’s first birthday. (I know. I couldn’t believe it either!) I had no idea what theme to do, or even where to start. But I knew I wanted classy. And I knew I wanted her picture in the card because, well, she’s so cute. (Biased, its true.)

As always, Tiny Prints was the absolute right place to look. Of course I fell in love with about 6 different invites, but found this Butterfly Bliss invite to be just calling her name.

I love how easy their interface is, too. You can add pictures, change wording, even fonts and colors. And after you place your order, rest assured that their customer service and follow-up is stellar. Tiny Prints really gets it all right.

This time, I was able to add matching thank you notes and return address labels. The thank you notes are perfect for my needs. Between you and me, I don’t like using big notes because they require so much writing to fill (and we all know who will be doing the writing.) So I love that the fold over thank you notes in the Butterfly Bliss collection are smaller. And the return address label added that perfect touch to make the envelopes something special.

Thanks to Tiny Prints for providing the products for this review.

Accessorizing and solving baby girl problems with Lilla Hairclips

This whole having a girl thing has been wonderful. But the one area that I’m still adapting is the whole hair-clip thing. See, I’m running into a few problems, like her hair is constantly in her eyes.

Maybe its just the way her hair grows, but she has so many long bangs and they won’t stay on the side… everything falls forward. So much so that the Huz has asked, on more than one occasion, when she gets her first hair cut. So sorry, honey. She’ll get her haircut when she’s… I don’t know, 5? (Hmmm… when do girls usually get their hair cut?)

  • To attempt to keep the bangs from her eyes, I clip it back. And I have lots of cute clips to choose from. But she takes them out all the time. Sometimes she makes a game of it. Other times it just comes out. The other day I reached between the cushions in her carseat and found 6 hair clips. Seriously. Six. (and almost all of them were a shade of pink). Now I’m checking back there every day. How do you get your little girl to keep her clips in?

Of course, since she’s so into removing her hairclips, there’s no surprise that we go through them rather quickly. For each one that I found tucked into her carseat, I’m sure we’ve lost others. The problem isn’t that they slip out. Its that she deliberately pulls them out.

So I’m always looking to find new hairclips that are cute and reasonably priced. A few weeks ago, I won a contest at Sami Cone‘s website, where I got to pick a hair clip set for Little from Lilla Hairclips. I had a hard time choosing, and they sent me a few to try out. The Alligator Clips work wonderfully in Little’s hair–on the rare occasion that she doesn’t pull them out, their hasn’t been any slippage. And Lilla Hairclips has a great variety of colors to match all of Little’s outfits (believe it or not, she has a few things that aren’t pink). They also sent a few snap clips which also hold Little’s hair nicely, but I don’t like putting them in because I hate the feeling of snapping clips against her head.

I’m very impressed by the variety and the cute styles. I also love that Lilla Hairclips partnered with littlethings, a nonprofit organization dedicated to furthering the education of Congolese girls in the Democratic Republic of Congo. For every hairclip that is purchased, a little girl in the Congo will be sent to school for a half day. For every headband purchased, a little girl will go to school for a whole day. Doesn’t that make you want to buy several hairclips and headbands? Me too.

Baby Carriers: Lightening the load with Baby K’tan, BabyHawk, Evenflo Snugli & Lillebaby

Little is almost 1 year old. I know. I can’t believe it.

In the past year, I’ve been busy learning how to chase a 6-year-old and a 4-year-old without dropping my baby. The secret? Baby carriers.

Now, I know all about the concerns with the CPSC over “wearing” your baby. Those concerns are very just and real. It goes without saying that one should carefully read baby carrier instructions prior to wearing. And practice, practice, practice: sitting down, standing on a very soft surface, wearing baby with another responsible adult in arms reach… all before you wear your baby out in the real world. Its also extremely important to recognize that wearing a baby does not equal paying attention to your baby. When you are wearing your baby, he is attached to you, yes. But it is your responsibility to consistently check on the baby’s well-being while you are wearing him or her. Make sure she can breathe. Make sure you can see her. And by all means, make sure she is secure.

Some top (and some favorite) baby carriers from Little’s first year:

Baby K’tan: with at least 9 ways to wrap your baby on you, this carrier was the one I used, consistently, in Disney World. It was so easy to move her from upright and looking at the World, to snuggled in to sleep, to breastfeeding during a show. It only took a few practices to confidently learn about 5 ways to hold her. I love the versatility of the Baby K’tan. And don’t let the 3-loops intimidate you (they’re very intimidating!) Watch the simple instructions and follow the well-described images to learn how to hold your baby properly. Twin bonus: you can hold your twins with this carrier!

Baby K'tan Baby Carrier

BabyHawk: This was reviewed last summer as I anticipated using the BabyHawk Carrier. In nearly 7(!) years of parenting, its the most well constructed, supportive, comfortable Mei Tai I have received and used (and, believe me, I’ve tried a lot.) Love the variety of patterns available. But what really scores the most points here is the comfort when you wear your baby in a BabyHawk. Its also made to hold toddlers on your back, so I’m confident I’ll be using this one for a long time coming.

BabyHawk Mei Tai

Evenflo Snugli Hug: This soft carrier has greater availability as you can pick it up at a Walmart store or purchase online, and the under $30 price point is worth mentioning. The Snugli Hug‘s Secure-lock buckles keep baby inside and offer a sense of security for parents uneasy about simply wrapping their child in cloth. It also has easy-adjustable straps to situate baby in the right spot. Baby can be carried in two ways: facing in or out (though babies should not face out until they can hold their heads up.) Unfortunately, the body on this carrier is a bit long if you have a small torso. Like many standard size carriers, it was too long for me. But works just fine for those with average and longer torsos.

Evenflo Snugli Hug

LilleBaby EveryWear Sport: What I really liked about this carrier was how light-weight and versatile the carrier is, as well as the potential for longterm wears–both within one day (its very easy to wear your baby in this carrier) and over time–children can be worn through toddlerhood and preschool, if your child will let you! With 5 carrying positions, baby and parent can adjust to what baby likes best as baby grows. And the LilleBaby EveryWear Sport has a pocket in the front–idea for walks and strolls when you don’t want to carry a lot. I found this carrier to be a bit difficult to get used to and to get my child into, however the video instructions on their site guide you through wearing your baby correctly so that you feel secure. (If you plan to use this carrier with a baby, you will need to buy the infant cradle, sold separately.)

Breastfeeding Bliss with a Bravado Bra (and a 10% off coupon code)

A few weeks ago, Jen from Nursing Mother Supplies asked to send me a new nursing bra to sample. The minute I read that its a Bravado bra, I was in. I’ve been so pleased with all the Bravado bras I have, for their lasting quality, the convenience of their breastfeeding closures and the comfort of the bra.

The Bliss offers everything I love about Bravado, in a full-coverage style. This is the bra to wear when you need full support. Its super comfortable with a large cup, its the bra I prefer to wear during my ‘heavier’ days. And while its not the sports bra I wear to work out usually, I did wear it to the gym the other day. Its that comfortable. I know. Crazy, right? A bra that’s that comfortable and supportive? So I did a little investigating and its Bravado’s Flexi-Fit support system that makes it such a pleasure to wear.

Its way too pretty for the gym. With a little embellishment, the Bravado Bliss lets you feel pretty and comfortable in your nursing bra.

Thanks to Nursing Mother Supplies for providing a sample for this review (and my comfort). Use coupon code NMS10 for 10% off your purchase.

Introducing Beau-Coup: Party Favors with Style

The favors were a huge part of my decor for the MYO Sundae Bridal Shower

In planning my sister’s bridal shower, I wanted to find something cute for a favor. I know that most party favors aren’t saved unless they’re useful and unique, and since I was the one planning the party, of course I wanted to think beyond bubbles and pastel mints.

As I was ordering invitations from Tiny Prints, I was led to their new partner: Beau-coup. Beau-coup offers truly unique favors and gifts. Just like Tiny Prints is known for baby and family invitations, Beau-coup has favors that focus on children themes like baby showers and first birthday gifts as well as favors for adults. What’s more, most of them are available personalized.

Available in Vanilla, Chocolate and Strawberry, I went for a colorful mix.

But just as I was able to select from the versatile selection for invitations at Tiny Prints, Beau-coup’s selection offered great alternatives for my MYO-Sundae Bridal Shower party. I selected Ice Cream Towel Flavors and they looked SO cute. They came pre-packaged in cellophane. I also ordered label stickers with the bride and groom’s names and stuck them on each ice cream cone.

The selection at Beau-coup is fantastic. In fact, for my sundae party, there were 3 ice cream favors and the choice wasn’t easy. Plus there were choices like Popsicles and cakes if I wanted to stay within the dessert theme but go beyond the ice cream. Beau-coup also offers personalized items like napkins and water bottles.

The labels are a separate purchase, but made the favors personal. I gave the extra labels to the bride and she loved them!

I love how simple it is that I can now order invitations, decoration and party favors all at one spot, and know that they’ll turn out fantastic and be supported by excellent customer service.

Thanks to Beau-coup for providing these party favors and labels as samples for this review.

Shopping Tiny Prints for Wedding Party Invitations

My sister’s getting married! I’m super excited, and so proud to be her [ahem] Matron of Honor. (Sounds SO old, you know?) So, for an engagement gift I offered to throw her a shower, hosted by the bridesmaids.

Immediately, I thought of Tiny Prints, as for the past few years, they’ve been my go-to place for  invitations and announcements. I was a bit concerned, though, because I’ve always relied on Tiny Prints for baby and family announcements and invitations, and wasn’t sure about the variety available for wedding-themed events.

Little did I know that my mom had already ordered engagement party invitations from Tiny Prints. Tiny Prints now has a wedding brand: Wedding Paper Divas, which immensely expands their invitations, announcements and stationary offerings. Even with this huge selection, I selected an invitation from their Valentine’s Day collection. Which is just one of the great aspects of ordering from Tiny Prints: there are so many choices and they’re all so versatile. You can find a new home announcement in the Christmas card selection, you just never know.

The party was a make-your-own-Sundae party and I took the name “Sweets & Treats” from the Valentine’s Day invite, adding “Bridal Shower.” The invitation turned out adorable, and especially fitting was the heart-shaped cherry on top–so versatile!

Ordering was simple! I created the copy, got to play around with fonts, sizes and colors, and quickly ordered. The next day I received a confirmation phone call, checking on the order and making sure I was okay with the proof before it was printed (my order was rushed). Love the customer service–the man who called was so friendly and helpful.

While I better not need to order wedding invitations for my Little girl for LOTS of years, any parties I’m giving in the meantime, I know I can rely on Tiny Prints for events of all types.

Tiny Prints just launched a new Greeting Cards service and are offering 3 free greeting cards to everyone who signs up for a membership (first year of membership fee is vaived!) Here’s a couple of current Tiny Prints coupon codes you can use with order:  TP2010 for $10 off your order of $49 or more.  MOM2BE4 for 10% off an order of $40 or more.

Thanks to Tiny Prints for providing the invitations for this review.

Central Park Outdoor Blanket & Cooler Bag from Skip Hop

Getting ready for a picnic at a T-ball game on our Central Park blanket by Skip Hop

This time every year we rave about our favorite picnic blanket because, with little kids, we all know how necessary a blanket is. This year is the first year, in the 5+ years I’ve written for Mommies with Style, that I’m changing my mind and telling you about a different blanket. This year, everywhere I go, I take the Central Park Outdoor Blanket & Cooler Bag.

So, what makes it so much better than my blanket of the past? This blanket is firm. The under-side is a firm canvas and the top its a satiny, easily wipeable fabric. The combination of these two qualities is key–it spreads out and lays down flat and keeps it shape, while the inevitable spills are clean-up-able.

The size of the blanket is deceiving from the angle of my picture (I really need a lesson in photography!) It actually measures 5×5, which is more than large enough for my family to eat and run on. And when the boys are running, the Huz and I have found ourselves relaxing with Little on the blanket.

What makes this blanket even better, and makes you think why didn’t anyone do this before?, is that it folds up inside itself and zips shut, into a square that wears as either a messenger, tote or a backpack. Plus, it has a detachble little bag that expands and can be used as a cooler bag. (The bag zips on and off. We keep it on even while we’re using it. You’re not likely to fit much more than a few water bottles inside it, but I use it to store an emergency diaper and a book.

I also love the idea of using it folded up as a seat cushion when you’re sitting at fall sports on the bleachers.

Thanks to Skip Hop for providing a sample for this review.

Perfect for Mother’s Day: Its time to Feed Your Soul

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Big’s eyes nearly roll to the back of his head in such heaven as they did when he tried Feed Your Soul’s Chocolate Chip Mint Cookies. He even sighed as he ate his.

The next night for dessert, he selected White Chocolate Snicker Doodle, he claimed, “Mom, I don’t know which is better. This one or last night. I really can’t decide.” Needless-to-say, every flavor my cookie monster tried he loved.

So, of course, I had to try them, too. (I am certainly not one to turn away cookies!) And, YUM! I tried Key Lime Cookie (which is like biting into cake, but in the shape and texture of a cookie) and White Chocolate Snicker Doodle (every bit as good as Big’s description. Seriously, the whole cookie melts in your mouth.)

Feed Your Soul cookies are intense and rich. Each flavor is unique and each bite is a deep, sweet surprise. Ours was packaged in a tin with a satin ribbon, and inside the cookies were packaged individually. You’ll find a multitude of themes available for gifting: Mother’s Day to Graduation, Wedding to Business. A percent of the net proceeds are given to charities (which the buyer can select).

Searching for a Mother’s Day present to send? Order early and use code BESTMOM for 20% off your order. (Hurry! This offer ends soon!)

Thanks to Feed Your Soul for providing yummy samples for this review.

Cirque du Soliel – La Nouba: Completely worth a sitter, this is one amazing show

They say your first Cirque is always your favorite. Well, I loved my first so much that I’m encouraged that even if my future Cirque’s aren’t quite the same, they’ll still be wonderful. But its true. I don’t know how another show could top my first.

You’ll recall that back in January my family vacationed at Disney World. We did the whole family thing almost every night. But the Huz and I also recognized the need to get away during our vacation. We were fortunate, my parents met us in Orlando for a few nights and gave us a night off so that we could play. (Actually, we had 2 nights out, but that will be a separate post.)

Most date nights, the Huz and I end up at a favorite sushi place or seeing a movie or driving around trying to figure out something really fun to do… and then end up back at the sushi place. But in Disney its all about celebrating, right? So we took the Disney buses over to Downtown Disney for our very first Cirque du Soliel show: La Nouba.

La Nouba is a static show. Whether you are there next week or in 4 years, expect it to be there. Deep inside Disney’s West Side, at the very end of this party land, is an enormous, modern theater. Enter, and you’ll be able to purchase drinks and snacks, and then find your seats in the nearly round theater. (By-the-way, definitely reserve your seats in advance. We visited during way-off-season and the theater was packed.) The theater is almost round and its tight, offering an amazing feeling of being right there in the story. There is no orchestra pit, no space between the audience and the stage. If you are in the front row, you are practically on stage. (While I doubt there’s a bad seat in the house, we sat in section 204 which was completely center, on the second level. I can’t imagine better seats than ours!)

For Cirque-virgins, like me and the Huz, the show is a mix of amazing acrobatics, music, gymnastics and dance. Choreographers somehow mixed these up into a phenomenal show unlike anything I’ve ever seen. We sat for over an hour and a half, barely moving, just watching. There was a story, but the only words were a few in French (I don’t speak French); the story was told through the movement and music on stage. The performance was moving and entertaining, no matter your language. Its Disney, right? So there were people from all over the world. About 2 rows behind me was a German couple and a few seats over were guests from somewhere in Asia. We all were emersed in the performance.

The talented performers were a mix of young and old.  A few of the fascinating acrobatics included bike stunts, tightrope, ropes dance, juggling and so. so. so. much more. And, while I don’t want to spoil this too much for you, some of the talent was really, really young. The children in the show were a highlight for me. I just couldn’t fathom kids (who looked to be about ages 5-11) having the amount of focus and drive that these children have. It was like one surprise after another.

Of course, what’s a cirq-us without clowns? This show had comedy balanced by drama and all balanced, literally, by fantastic stunts and feats. There was always something going on, always a few things to watch.

The program says La Nouba is appropriate for all ages, and children won’t be disappointed due to awe and excitement in the action. But it was a great night for a date night for us and if you can swing it, I definitely recommend you get a sitter and go.

Following the show, my husband and I walked the West Side and ended up at Wolfgang Puck’s, what else?, Sushi Bar. Which was possibly the best sushi we’ve had, ever. I asked him about the show: “That is something I would say, pooh, too much money. But having now seen the show, I’m not even hesitant to go again. I will definitely go again and spend the money [on LaNouba].”

Thank you to Cirque du Soliel La Nouba for providing press tickets for this amazing experience.
