More super shoes, these are from Rileyroos

Just when Middle was outgrowing baby shoes, I first heard of Rileyroos. I was fortunate to get a pair on his feet, just barely, though. Because he grew out of them and was suddenly jumping through mud puddles.

So with Little suddenly on the move, it was perfect timing for Rileyroos to come out with their spring line. I was sent a sample pair of their sporty Dakota shoes, of course in pink (Sunset). I’ve always found Rileyroos to run a little small, which is perfect since Little, at 8 and a half months, is just getting into her 6-9 month clothing. So the fact that the size 6-12 month shoes actually stay on her feet is a miracle! (in most other lines she can still pull size 0-6 month shoes off.)

I also find the construction of Rileyroos to be top-notch. The rubber padding is perfect for future protection and padding when she’s learning to walk. And they provide excellent traction now that she’s army crawling and attempting to crawl–she keeps rubbing her toes on the ground–the design holds up extremely well and there hasn’t been much, if any, scuffing.

Check out their sale items, too. They have a great line of new spring shoes, which means Rileyroos is pushing a few cuties out the door.

Thanks to Rileyroos for providing sample shoes for this review. Use code MWS10 for 15% off through April 18, 2010.

KidsNiteOut: Do yourself a favor and go OUT when you’re at Disney World

On our recent trip to Disney World, the Huz and I went over to Epcot for drinks, dinner and fireworks. It was calm. It was quiet. And it was, believe it or not, romantic (we ate in France at the window during Illuminations).

Disney is contracted with KidsNiteOut.com as a babysitting service. So when you call Disney to inquire about hiring a cast member to babysit, they send you there. I checked it out, asked about their security and background checks and reserved a sitter.

Its not cheap, ya’ll. Understand that. Then again, this is Disney and you can’t expect anything to be cheap. But Nancy showed up exactly on time (maybe even a few minutes early) with a clipboard full of questions and a suitcase full of games. Awesome games. Fun toys. Exciting stuff for the kids to do and play. Nancy is a Grandmother and a former fulltime Nanny. She nannies with KidsNiteOut as a career because she loves kids. What more could I ask, right? Besides the safety of my children.

And they were safe. Very safe. Nancy is on Disney property several days and nights a week. She knows the resort better than any visitor because this is her job. Its her life. She’s just one of many sitters through KidsNightOut.

Listen. Leaving your kids with a sitter is scary stuff. I get that. But its worth a call to learn about their babysitting program, right? See how you feel after you talk to their service and go with your gut. Believe me. My gut had a wonderful night out.

7 months: What she’s using now… and what I’m using, too

I haven’t done one of these in a while, probably because time keeps slipping by so fast and I’m getting way too sentimental. But now that Little’s getting bigger, I’m noticing things she likes, and things I like.

For example, she definitely has a few favorite toys. She loves the Teeth teethers from Nuk. I know. I’m thinking teethers are just things to chew, what difference does one make from another? Well, apparently, a lot. Because today I gave her a different teether and she continued to cry until I grabbed one of the 3-piece set. I really think its the size, the way they’re so easy to pick up and hold firmly in her hand while its shaped to fit in her mouth just where its needed. Other toys she enjoys include International Playthings Hide’N Squeak Eggs, Taggies Grabby Elephant and books and books and books (see below).

Her hair is finally just barely long enough to wear clippies and bows. After two boys, its hard for me to get used to (and remember to) putting a bow in her hair. And I just don’t think of myself as a bow-type of mom. Still, I’m really pleased with how the clips by Giddy Giddy stay in her hair. (She still has very little locks, so the teeny tiny clips that would probably hold back about 3 strands in my hair are perfect for a little baby girl.)

My bag of choice has been, for a while, the Skip*Hop Studio Tote. I’m still amazed that its fitting everything I need. And I love the pocket placement on the outside. Everything has its place.

I’ve also found myself using my Vera Bradley Tech Case all the time. This obsession started at Disney World, where I stored my cell and our Keys to the World. Because our room key and our credit cards were all attached to the cards, I never needed to carry anything else. Now that I’m back my tech case goes everywhere with me. It travels from bag to bag holding my ipod touch, cell phone anddrivers license. And when I’m doing a quick trip (like preschool pick up) without a bag, the tech case is all I need.

She’s eating now, too. And I’ve mentioned it before, but I just love feeding her with Plum Organics baby food. We’ve eaten out almost every night this week, and its been so easy with Plum Organics. I don’t need to bring a bowl because the baby food just squirts out onto the spoon–less mess, less dishes. And the fact that the packaging rolls up means there’s less carbon footprint.

Little also has a few favorite books. She’s really into the touching books, so I’ve been collecting a few of the That’s Not My… series from Usborne, which are so sweet. We also read Eric Carle’s The Very Lonely Firefly and Martha Alexander’s A You’re Adorable at least once a day. Note to anyone looking to buy a baby a book: my baby loves to touch, feel and sing!

Over the past 5 years we’ve received a lot of samples. Some of the companies mentioned in this post have provided samples including products by Vera Bradley, Skip*Hop, Plum Organics, Giddy Giddy, Nuk, International Playthings and Usborne.

Helpful guide books for Disney World

As we were preparing to travel to Disney World, a lot of people wanted to offer me advice. And lots and lots of advice. As a writer, I requested suggestions. And, OMG, I had no idea how many suggestions I’d receive. Its like everyone and her mother and grandmother has a travel agency, a travel guide, a travel book and a travel tip to share. And I couldn’t believe just how many people out there are “former cast members.” From my overnight camp theater counselor to my current stylist, they all worked there.

So, in addition to all the advice I received,  brought along a few books on my trip. My absolute favorite guide was PassPorter’s Walt Disney World 2010: The Unique Travel Guide, Planner, Organizer, Journal, and Keepsake!. I read it front to back before I left for Orlando. And then, once there, I read it in sections and refered to it anytime we had a question. Or a change of plan. Or just needed a refresher before leaving the door. I’m telling you. If you’re going to Disney World, this book is absolutely a must-bring.

I also brought along The Disney Queue Line Survival Guidebook which, written by a former cast member, is a book intended to use in the parks as you wait in those dreadful lines. At each ride, it provides quizzes, things to look for, and trivia about the ride and the part of the parks right by you. We were lucky, our lines were never longer than 10 minutes, so I didn’t find the book to be a necessity to carry. However, I did enjoy reading it during off times and quizzing my kids.

The Disney Queue Line Survival Guidebook was received as a sample.

Look Out World Here I Come!

I’ve slowed down on reviewing movies and music lately, but when we view a movie that gets a “Mom! I WUV this one!” I know its worth a second glance.

The Look Out World DVDs each focus on a different major city. (We have the first, NYC, which is great for us because Middle visited there this winter and is a bit obsessed).

We join the story as Otto, the world adventurer, Blink, his fuzzy brown bear, and Casey, his friendly suitcase,  travel through and introduce kids to the city.  Watching the DVD today, we traveled on a taxi, walked through central park while interactively exploring our surroundings (“now you try tapping like a woodpecker!”) and saw the Empire State Building, which we learned is the tallest building in the city.

We also visited the Statue of Liberty, and on Middle’s second viewing, he prepared me by telling me that the Statue of Liberty lives on an island. We continued visiting the city through Bronx Zoo, a pizza shop and more. All through the video we practiced shapes, counting, colors and reading. When not viewing, the DVD is kept in an Adventure Guide Book, packed with activities relevant to the DVD and city.

There are many cities planned in this series, but currently only the debut New York City DVD/book is available.

This DVD was received as a sample.

Ibex’s New Kids Outdoor Clothing Line: Ideal for chilly days

I know, I know. You’ve been hearing nothing but complaints about the cold. ‘Cause its been cold around here. Really, really cold.

And now that we’re moving into spring (finally!) I’m preparing for the kids to want to go out and run and play. But while the sun is shining, it still isn’t exactly warm around here.

Ibex sent me a sample of their Unisex Kids Shak Jersey. Its a pull-over, half-zip sweater of merino wool. Generously sized, it has a limited time availability. And its on sale! I have to say, I thought the regular price of $95 was a bit high. It concerns me to spend that much money on a sweater that the kids will roll in the mud in. Of course, its merino wool and really well made. This sweater isn’t going to snag and it won’t pull. Its top quality. Something the huz would wear, if size 7 would only fit him. But the merino raises the price and makes it a dry clean only sweater. So, now that its on sale  for $70 I feel a better about sharing it with you. Because, afterall, it is a well-made merino wool sweater.

Now, I also have to warn that you should totally and completely follow the washing instructions. I didn’t. Big wore it one time, looked adorable (just like Daddy in his nice pullover sweaters) and then I washed it. Let me tell you all, this is a dry clean only sweater. Do not, please, please, please, do not dump it into the machine and wash. It kept its size and shape, and its actually holding up really well–all that stitching is still in place and super strong. But the fabric’s color isn’t as brilliant and the sweater, I’m now told, is too itchy. So, listen up, people. Don’t wash it in the machine. Sweaters say Dry Clean Only for a reason.

So, snatch up this fantasticly made, super warm, beautiful merino wool sweater. Save it for special cold weather wears. Its gorgeous–a great outdoor/indoor sweater.

Thanks to Ibex for providing the sample for this review.

Bravado introduces a line at Target

This winter, Bravado, who’s bras usually tend toward the pricier of the nursing group, began stocking racks at Target, making their brand available to the mainstream. Labeled Basics by Bravado!, its a smaller, less frills line than the fancy Bravado brand bras. Available in only a few “natural” colors and 3 styles: the Emma (Sleep bra), Stella (Nursing bra) and Felicity (Nursing cami).

I love these bras. No. Really. I mean, I know it sounds strange to say I love a bra, but if you have to wear one, wear one that’s comfortable, easy to use and looks decent, right? So today I was wearing a top that had a pretty low-cut V (which Little insists on pulling down all the time) and the Stella Nursing bra looked like a cute tank top underneath. Making it even better, the strap clips are so simple to un- and attach.

The Basics by Bravado! website has a great calculator/chart on their webpage to help nursing moms find which bra fits her needs, and you’ll read on their site about the Spot, Click & Enter sweepstakes they’re hosting.

Moms-to-be, these are great bras, and they’re a fantastic introduction into the world of nursing, at a fabulous price point. I remember when I was pregnant with my first (goodness! that was 7 years ago!!) I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on a bra when I didn’t know how long I’d last breastfeeding. Now that Bravado has a line available at Target, its an affordable way to know you’re trying breastfeeding in comfort.

I’m a Bravado Mama Ambassador on my blog, Just Preicous. As an ambassador, I’ve recieved samples, information and compensation.

Skip*Hop’s Zoo Lunchies: Makes packing up picnics and school lunches fun

How cute is Middle’s new Skip*Hop Monkey lunch bag from their Zoo Lunchies collection? The minute I opened the box, his boring, old lunchbag was pushed aside in favor of the monkey, for all its personality.

I was a little worried about the size, because it seemed smaller than his other bag. But it fits a sandwich, apple, side snack and a reusable bottle into the bag, plus a cooler pack, napkin and utensils.

In addition to its easy wipe-ability, I love that the carrier strap hooks on to other bags, like Skip*Hop’s Zoo Packs, as well as bags not made by  Skip*Hop.

Thanks to Skip*Hop fro providing a sample.

Sweet Dreams with Aden & Anais

Remember Linus and his blankie? We love him. We love that he needed a security blanket the way Middle needs his thumb. While none of the kids has attached to a blankie, they do love to pull them up and cuddle.

One such great cuddling blanket is the Classic Dream Blanket by Aden & Anais. Its so-soft fabric is made of a natural, gentle muslin, making it breathable, flexible and very comfortable.

A great baby gift, the dream blanket is available in colorful bright prints. It uses 4 layers of the light muslin fabric, making it plush enough for a true cuddle.

Thanks to Aden & Anais for providing a sample for this review.

Scare Me Nots: Friendly little monsters!

Middle is afraid. One night its the dark. Another night its a noise. I’m starting to think he’s not really afraid, but that he just likes using the word. Regardless, it was definitely time to bring out the Scare Me Not monster, an adorable friendlly monster that’s easy to hug and cuddle.

What makes Scare Me Not monsters unique is their long, attachable tail. So if there’s a monster under the bed, your Scare Me Not Monster can peek under and tell the monster to stay away. Have a goon hanging in the closet? Just hang a Scare Me Not. They come with an adorable story that you can read on the website explaining how Scare Me Nots “get” monsters because they’re monsters, too.

Middle loves that his monster’s eyes are wide open all night, looking out to protect him, so its easier for him to close his eyes at night. And the introduction of Scare Me Not monsters was perfect for him. We had just returned from a trip to Disney where we had to visit the Laugh Floor (from Monsters Inc.) several times because we loved it so much. Now that the Monsters Inc. monsters are funny, we introduced Middle to Scare Me Not monsters as friends of Mike and the gang. Of course, he bought it. Middle’s Scare Me Not monster goes everywhere with him. From his bed to our bed to the family couch.  I haven’t heard a dark complaint since. And anytime he gets worried at night, we just remind him to pull his monster a little closer.

Thanks to Innovative Toys for providing sample Scare Me Not monsters for this review.

Azula keeps the ‘suit from snaggin’

azulaThere were two reasons that our Disney trip was unswimmable: 1. the un-Florida-y weather that week and 2. the Luna pool at the Boardwalk Villas was closed. But that doesn’t stop me from telling you just how great the Azula is for your vacation/summertime adventures at the pool.

The Azula is a little butt-matt protects your swimsuits from snagging when you sit at the edge of the pool. ’nuff said, right? I mean, any mom of a toddler can attest to how necessary this is. It extends the life (and look) of your sexy little swim suit from first wear. So newborn moms are certainly wondering why?, right? Because as soon as your little one is toddling she is going to l-o-v-e the pool. And hours at the baby pool will mean two things: Good sunscreen (reviews to come) and snagging suits. Unless, of course, you get an Azula.

The Azula is lightweight and rolls up really thin so that its simple to keep in your pool bag. I know you’re ordering one for summer*, but you may want to order a few extras. They’re also great against burn on a leather seat in your car, sporting events (keep that butt dry during soccer, Mom!), beaching, boating and more.

Thanks to Its Pretty Smart for providing a sample Azula.

*I know, seems crazy to talk summer with over 30 inches of snow this winter, right? But its helping me to think summer while I shovel!

Dining Baby Style with Plum Organics & the Baby Dipper

Little Little is eatting big time. The teeny tiny one has been reaching out for foods for weeks and she can finally join in on the fun. And she just loves it.

plumPlum Organics : My friend was shocked the other day when I told her I taste baby food. Of course, I was just as shocked that she didn’t. So, apparently, I’m quite the baby food connoisseur as I’ve now tried several brand (in addition to my own, homemade baby food). Point being, Plum Organic baby and toddler foods are actually yummy. As in, if I was going to be the baby food eater, I’d be asking for Plum rather than others. Their new Just line of fruits taste wholesome and rich, the flavor really jumps out of the taste. And I’ve noticed that while she’s not being too picky, she’s definitely responding to their foods. I also love Plum Organic’s easy to use and reuse packaging. The resealable packaging vacuums in what is left in the package as it squirts out onto the spoon or into the bowl, so that you aren’t mixing in bacterias and making any uneatten remainder uneatable. Apparently, more flavors are coming soon to the Just line, and I’m really hoping some of those flavors will be veggies. Plum Organics offers a Tots line that includes mixes of vegetables and fruits and Little (and I) will be tasting those soon, too.

babydipperThe Huz and I decided that the Baby Dipper Bowl is another one of those lightbulb moments. You know, the one where a lightbulb goes off in your head because you thought of this great idea. Except this wasn’t our idea. This was the brilliant idea of Barbara Schantz, mom of 2 sets of twins. The Huz loves the Baby Dipper because of the friction it provides.  The bottom is a rubber that makes it very difficult to easily slide across a surface. Additionally, its thicker around the sides and the shape is hard for a baby to grip, so babies aren’t likely to pick up this bowl and toss it. (yay!) My favorite innovation about this bowl is the slope: it slopes down in one corner so that I don’t have to tilt the bowl to pick up food in the spoon. Its one of those simple things that no one else thought of.

Thanks to Baby Dipper and Plum Organics for the samples for review.

Beginnings by Maclaren: An impressive little baby-body gift

Packaging says a lot when you’re baby gifting. So does quality and style. When you’re looking for all this in a small baby gift, consider Maclaren’s beginning Rangebeginnings.

I know! I was pretty surprised to realize that Maclaren, reknowned for its buggies/strollers and accessories, had moved into bath products. I was sent samples of beginning bath milks and massage oils, and the package alone is impressive.

The oils and milks provide a mix of nurturing scents that are calming and rejuvenating for the body and mind. Moms to be will delight in rubbing their pregnant bellies and, later, massaging their little babies.

Thanks to Maclaren for providing a sample for review.

See Kai Run’s Smaller Shoes: I think I said “aren’t these SO cute?” at least 10 times. In 2 minutes.

Little's first pair of cute girly shoes! Love them!

Little's first pair of cute girly shoes! Love them!

Little has yet to walk, yet to even crawl, but when her first pair of Smaller baby shoes arrived, she reached a major milestone, for her shoe-loving mom: she wore shoes. Sure, they were off within 5 minutes, but 5 minutes was enough time for me to coo over their cuteness.

Smaller shoes, though, are much more than cute. Produced by See Kai Run, they are a, ahem, smaller shoe than their original line. Instead of the rubber soles that adorn the originals, Smallers have soft suede bottoms with non-slip rubber patches at the heel and ball of the foot. They’re made of a butter-soft leather that See Kai Run says is stronger than ever before:

“We’ve paid attention to customer feedback and have responded with improvements that will make our shoes even better,” says founder Cause Haun. “While See Kai Run has always prided itself on creating flexible, supple shoes healthy for developing feet, the trade-off has been using leather that has not always worn as well as we would like. Our new leather has twice the fiber strength of the original, but doesn’t sacrifice the luxurious look and butter-soft feel our customers love. We’re so pleased to roll out this major improvement.”

So, Smaller wasn’t around when Big and Middle were babies, so I never had the opportunity to try them on my guys. And one of the first (and most favorite) things I noticed once I had the shoes on Little’s feet was that their adjustable strap is truly adjustable. Her feet are super narrow (I forsee agony finding cheerleading sneakers in the future.) The heels that are so darn skinny that many shoes with elastic cuffs fall right off. So I was ever-so-impressed that Smaller’s hook & loop closure is truly adjustable. The hook & loop covers 100% of the strap, and I could pull the strap completely to make the fit around the ankle snug enough (and I mean, she’s teeny-tiny-itty-bitty there) so that the shoe didn’t fall off.

And that’s when I started in on my “OMG they’re so adorable!  So stinkin’ cute! Can you believe how cute these shoes really are?!” to my poor, childless sister. Who agreed they are adorable. And then moved back to reading her fashion and celeb gossip blogs.

Thanks to See Kai Run for the oh-so-cute sample shoes. Receive free shipping through noon Pacific Time on Tuesday, March 2.

Motherhood: Watching my life in a movie

motherhoodMy Facebook status this weekend read: About to watch Motherhood. Will be interesting to see how Hollywood depicts my life in a movie.

Little did I know just how much of my life I was about to see. Uma Thurman is Eliza, a mom to 2 kids, a dog, and, at times, her sometimes scatterbrained husband, played by Anthony Edwards, in Greenwhich Village. What you realize within the first few minutes is that Eliza isn’t just a mom, she’s a Mom Blogger. (Have to mention that the movie was completely stolen by Minnie Driver who portrayed an amazing divorced, very pregnant Mama.)

Motherhood traces Eliza’s ups and downs through her typical-mothering day. Always a small problem abounds: like losing her parking spot or finding her child’s name misspelled on her birthday cake. While I wouldn’t call the movie hysterical, there were certainly enough parts that I could identify with that I found myself laughing, and other times tearing (how sweet when she watches her daughter on her last day being 5). Of course, like so many movies about parenthood, there are parts that seem so far-fetched and unbelieveable that I also laughed, and cried.

Motherhood was released to video yesterday and it’s 48% off at Amazon. Definitley a movie for a mom who needs a lift or a laugh, at her own (and other mom’s) expenses.

A Motherhood DVD was provided for this review.

Rather than just another bottle of water, have some WAT-AAH!

wataahI’m a big water mom. The kids bring water to school every day for lunch (juice boxes rarely enter or leave our house.) And at meals and snack time, the kids know they have 2 choices for drinks: water or milk.

Of course, I naturally wanted to try out a new water.  I wasn’t sure what to expect. I mean, water is water, right? Well, kind of. WAT-AAH is water with a bonus. Its water with minerals infused into it to enhance your well-being. WAT-AAH offers 4 choices: Energy, Body, Bones and Brain. While “Body” is straight, pure water, the other three have minerals (like Magnesium in “Bones” to strengthen the bones.)

There is really no difference in taste. The kids never would have known they weren’t drinking our regular water from SAMS Club, had they not been drinking from really cool bottles. The packaging includes easy to handle, crisp bottles with a bright label and a cool kid on it. Getting kids’ attention, of course. Making it cool to drink healthy water.

WAT-AAH was created to give kids a cool, healthy alternative to sodas and juices. And with no artificial coloring or sugars, but still with a cool look, WAT-AAH is a great option for water-friendly households, and even more for households that want to become water-friendly.

Thanks to WAT-AAH for the sample bottles as well as the fun extras like t-shirts and tattoos that were sent for this review.
