The cutest, girly hoodie.

I have found the cutest little girly hoodie for my daughter.  Now I could tell you that I love to put her in hoodies because they’re comfortable, or practical, or that they keep her warm.  The truth of the matter is that I love wearing them, and anything in miniature size is just adorable.  The ruffled zip up hoodie by b. children’s wear is, by far, the cutest hoodie that I have for my daughter, and if it came in adult sizes I would wear it!  On the practical side, it washes very well and has been great for layering on the few chilly days we’ve had so far this fall.

The black hoodie (or “zippy” as my Irish friends would call it) is embellished with blue-green, jersey ruffles and is just darling.  It comes in sizes 3-6months to a Youth 12.  (I’m going to work on that adult size…)  They come pre-shrunk, so it’s best to order a size larger than normal.  The ruffled zip up hoodie retails for $34 and can be purchased on b. children’s wear’s etsy site along with some other adorablely, unique items like onesies and t-shirts.  Plus, if you place an order of more than $50 by the end of October with b. children’s wear you will receive free shipping!

TummyTub: Making Bathtime Easier for Newborns

For nine months your baby feels safe, comfortable and secure in mother’s womb – what better way to help baby relax than to mimic that environment?  TummyTub was developed in Holland in cooperation with physicians, midwives and nurses to help ease the transition from womb to the world.  The unique womb-shape allows baby to maintain a fetal position and stay warm while you bathe him.

TummyTub is said to help calm colicky babies.  I received my tub after my little one was past her bout of colic, but judging by her enjoyment of the tub in later months, I’m sure it would have helped us during some sleepless nights.  We did have some successes with the TummyTub, though.  Water stayed warmer longer since there’s less surface area exposed, we could use it anywhere…not necessarily in the sink or bathtub, and clean up was a breeze!  It was super easy to travel with as well and even served as an extra container to pack baby’s things – something that’s always a plus when traveling with a little one!  My little one loves bathtime and has progressed to the tub, but TummyTub is suggested for toddlers up to 2 years old.  Yep, up to 2 years old!  I know when you look at that little tub you wouldn’t think that even an 8 month old could fit in there, but I assure you that they can.  You can read all about the benefits for every age on TummyTub’s site.

TummyTub retails for $42 and can be purchased directly from the TummyTub website or from retailers around the world.  The company has also designed a Two-Step Stool that allows you to sit comfortably in a chair while bathing baby in the TummyTub and can then be converted to a step stool or seat for your child as they get older.

A Wine Club Specially Designed for Moms. What a Fabulous Idea!

Before getting pregnant, sharing a bottle of wine with my husband or a good friend was one of my favorite things to do.  Now that our little one has an 8pm bedtime, I have a little bit of time to enjoy a glass of wine before hitting the hay myself.  I’ve typically relied on my husband to keep a selection of wines that I’ll enjoy in the house.  I have an idea about my favorite kinds, but he’s a much better wine shopper (a.k.a. wine snob) and I just don’t have the time to hit the liquor store with a baby in tow.  A brand new service takes care of all of my wine worries: California Wine Club’s Wine Moms Series!

“Stop wasting time trying to find good wine from a sea of unknown labels.  Now, with a little help from some friends, you can get award-winning, limited-production wine delivered to your door!”

For just $35.95 per month plus $13 in shipping and handling, you’ll receive an armchair tasting and tour of an artisan, “mom and pop” California winery including:

  • Two bottles of limited-production wine
  • The Uncorked newsletter featuring wine tips, tasting notes and recipes
  • A copy of The Sipping Point and a wine tote with your first order
  • Big savings on the wines you love: reorder and save up to 50% off normal retail
  • Plus much, much more!

And each bottle is guaranteed to be one you love.  If it’s not, they’ll replace it with something you do love!  You can choose your shipments to include a red and white bottle, two reds or two whites.  You can also schedule shipments as gifts in any monthly increment you desire.

I guess the most important part to tell you is that this wine is actually really good!  My shipment included Sylvester Vineyard’s 2008 Kiara Sauvignon Blanc and the 2007 Syrah.  The real judge was my husband and although he was skeptical, he really enjoyed both bottles!  When ordering, enter the code “style” and you’ll receive an extra bottle with your first shipment!  It’s a great deal for any mom!

Precious & Few’s Christening Gowns Live Up to Their Name

Baby christenings are a special time for new families; and special times call for special outfits.  As is tradition, I wanted Gianna to have a long, beautiful and girly white gown for her day.  I was lucky enough to receive a “Rosebuds and Lace” gown from Precious & Few Infant Wear.  And, just as their name states, their gowns are totally precious!

Precious & Few currently offers three gowns:

  • * the “Embroidered Gown” - a frilly gown with lots of lace trim
  • * the “Heirloom Coat Dress” – a vintage-inspired pleated coat dress with cotton slip
  • * the “Rosebuds and Lace” – a simple gown with cap sleeves and a few lace details

All three are beautifully crafted in either white linen or ivory silk and made in the US.  Inspired by an old Irish heirloom, Precious & Few was launched to offer beautiful gowns that could be passed down through a family, creating a new tradition.

My mother-in-law created my husband’s christening gown from her wedding dress – a very sweet and sentimental idea.  However, for those of us who aren’t as handy with a sewing machine or just couldn’t bear to cut up her wedding dress (it takes my breath away just thinking about it!), then Precious & Few offers gowns that are just as breathtaking (if not more).

The christening gowns are offered in two different sizes (3 months or 6 months) and are all 37″ long.  Prices start at $295, and while this may seem a little steep, just think of how long this gown will last.  I definitely plan on passing this along through my family.  One other tradition in my family that I plan to continue is the embroidering of the baby’s name on the gown.  Each child that’s been baptized in it will have their name and birthdate embroidered along the bottom hem.  Gianna’s will be the first on this Precious & Few gown, but I’m sure not the last!

Newborn Neccessities: Floor Play

Even newborn babies love to play…or at least love to watch you try to play with them!  And the safest place to lay them to play is usually the floor.  Throwing a blanket on the floor for a baby works just fine, but for something a little more fun and comfy there’s Bestever’s baby mats.  Gianna has spent hours happily rolling around on her Bestever giraffe mat.  That’s why I’m topping off my top ten list of newborn neccessities with Bestever’s baby mats.

Made from snuggly, soft fabric, the Bestever mats are perfect for getting in that extra tummy time.  Of course since the giraffe is so soft and silky, Gianna tries to eat it every time she is on her belly. I learned pretty quickly that the mats are machine washable.  And they wash really well.  After the mat air dries I fluff out the plush fabric and it looks brand new.

The mats are offered in a variety of animals, including monkeys, bears, frogs and cats and are all 31″ long.  Bestever mats can be purchased directly from their site on Amazon.com or Toys ‘R Us for between $40 and $50.  These mats make great shower gifts, but could also be given as birthday gifts.  Toddlers could easily use a Bestever floor mat for watching TV, coloring, or any other floor activity.  And they’re just so darn cute!

Newborn Neccessities: Wrap her up!

Although Gianna wasn’t thrilled with being swaddled as a newborn, it certainly helped us to calm her and get her to sleep on many a night.  Most nights, however, it took several attempts to get the swaddle tight enough since she always managed to wriggle out of it.  Now it doesn’t take an engineering degree to master the folds and tucks of a proper swaddle, but I won’t say that it’s the easiest thing to do either.  WrapADoodle was created to alleviate the hassle of all that wrapping.  And that’s why they are #9 on my list of Newborn Neccessities.

With a WrapADoodle you don’t have to wind any fabric round and round the baby; just simply tuck her in the fabric pocket and tie together the sides for an instant swaddle.  Each WrapADoodle is made to fit babies up to 4 months, though since Gianna is such a peanut she was able to fit well into her 5th month.  Hers is made of the cutest brown cotton flannel covered in colorful animals – the Whales, Fish, Turtles, Giraffes design.  In fact, each WrapADoodle is made with 100% cotton flannel and there are 9 adorable prints from which to choose.  And they wash wonderfully well!

You can also order a matching BurpADoodle burp cloth made of the exact fabric as the WrapADoodle.  BurpADoodles are a great size burp cloth that look a heck of a lot cuter on your shoulder than the white cloth diapers which most of us resort to.  They are sold individually or as a gift set.

WrapADoodles can be ordered directly from their website for $39.99 and make great baby shower gifts.  Mention Mommies with Style when you order and you’ll receive a matching BurpADoodle for free!

Newborn Neccessities: A Closet Full of No-Fuss Baby Clothes

Ok, so maybe you don’t really need a closet full of clothes for your newborn, but you certainly need enough to get you through diaper blowouts and spit-up attacks.  At least until you can find time for the next load of laundry.  Gianna has been most comfortable in no-fuss, simple, cotton onesies and footie pajamas, so we have plenty!  I have lots of cute little outfits for photos and when she goes to visit, but I can tell that she feels the most relaxed when she’s just in basic cotton clothes…just like me.  Go figure.  That’s why no-fuss baby clothes are #8 on my list of newborn neccessities.  Here are a few of the pieces that I especially like:

Zutano Itzy Bitzy – Gianna is a peanut, only weighing 6lbs. 1oz. when she was born.  It took weeks for newborn-sized clothes to even fit her.  Her Farm Fresh Long Sleeve Wrap Onesie from Zutano Itzy Bitzy was one of the first pieces of clothing to actually look nice on her.  The wrap design made it so much easier to dress her, since I could just lay it out, stick her arms in the sleeves and wrap her up.  Itzy bitzy is Zutano’s premier line of newborn and preemie clothing designed specifically to fit in the first few days of life.  And that’s exactly what they do.  Plus, all of their pieces come in fun and bright mix-and-match pieces perfect for gift giving!  Zutano Itzy Bitzy can be purchased from their site or from a number of boutiques and online shops.

Positively Organic - These days organic clothing has become all the rage, for adults as well as kids and babies and probably for good reason.  Positively Organic has some of the cutest outfits for infants, toddlers and bigger kids.  Gianna has a long sleeved baby bodysuit with a photo of a baby bunny on the front.  It’s so darn cute!  The photo is a very high quality image transfer that hasn’t cracked, faded or bled the dozens of times it has already been washed and dried.  Unlike many other organic clothing lines, Positively Organic has some really vibrant colored pieces with fun and bright designs.  They also have a really cute story about how they came to be, and even though their comapny is highly successful, the founders still personally print each of the images on their clothing.  Positively Organic products can be purchased directly from their site.

Kicky Pants – Hands down, the softest, silkiest article of clothing that I have for Gianna is her Kicky Pants bamboo onesie.  I absolutely love putting her in this.  I have a cream colored one so she can wear it with pretty much any pair of pants that she has…and she does!  Kicky Pants has a wide variety of infant, toddler, bigger kid and maternity clothing in cotton prints and bamboo basics; all in a variety of beautiful colors.  Their clothing can be purchased at boutiques worldwide and several online shops all listed on their site.

Newborn Neccessities: Snuggly, Silky Blankets

People love buying anything soft for a newborn baby – clothes, stuffed animals, blankets – and having a baby in the dead of winter in the midst of record-breaking snowstorms certainly made me appreciate all the warm, snuggly gifts.  I don’t think a day went by in the month of February where I wasn’t using at least two baby blankets at a time: one wrapped around Gianna and the other wrapped around me!  While the spring and summer months have brought us beautiful weather as well as some record-breaking temperatures, Gianna still loves cuddling in her thick, plush blankets; the more snuggly the better.  Right now she has two favorites: her Luv My Woobie blanket and her Little Giraffe blanket.  They both have silky, satin edges that are always in her mouth.  That’s why snuggly, silky baby blankets are #7 on my list of newborn neccessities.

Gianna has the Brooklyn infant blanket from Luv My Woobie – a 36×29″ chocolate brown and pink flowered blanket.  The patterned front is made of cotton and the back is a pale pink paisley chenille with a small velcro pocket perfect for storing a pacifier.  The whole blanket is framed in a fuschia satin trim – Gianna’s favorite part.  She’s at the age where everything has started to go in her mouth, and her Woobie is no exception.  She loves to suck on the satin edges.  Even at 5-months, Gianna can be wrapped in this large blanket.  Recently, I’ve been using it to keep her warm in the air conditioning while she’s nursing.  We take the Woobie with us wherever we go, though Luv My Woobie sells smaller, travel size blankets better suited for this purpose as well.  The Woobie infant blankets can be purchased at Luv My Woobie’s site and prices start at $64.00.  Enter code JUL15 at checkout and receive 15% off .

When the Woobie is in the wash, Gianna also has the soft, snuggly Little Giraffe blanket to keep her warm (it also has the satin edges to put in her mouth).  She has a pale yellow Luxe blanket - a 29×35″ blanket made with Luxe fabric with a shiny, satin trim.  She loves snuggling with it and I love that it has kept is plushness even after several washes.  I also think it’s fun that several celebrity babies carry a Little Giraffe like Gianna’s, including Suri Cruise.  Little Giraffe blankets can be purchased at high-end retailers such as Nordstrom’s or from a variety of boutiques and online stores with prices starting at about $50.

Newborn Neccessities: No Change Changing Pad

After the initial shock of the cold winter months, baby Gianna has learned to love getting her diaper changed.  Changing time has turned into play time.  And given the opportunity, she’ll laugh, kick and giggle for half an hour…as long as she’s naked.  Of course I love keeping her happy and playing, but “naked time” presents me with two challenges.  The first is that I want her someplace safe; somewhere that I don’t have to stand over her watching that she doesn’t roll.  The second is that there tends to be messy accidents when the diaper is off.  The Bottom’s Up Baby Gear changing pad has solved both of these problems for me.

That is why it’s #6 on my list of Newborn Neccessities.

When used as originally intended – covering a changing pad that sits on a changing table or dresser - it’s an ingenius idea.  In my household, the way I use it makes it one of the most visited surfaces in the house.  My Bottom’s Up Baby Gear changing pad cover is covering a changing pad, but that pad sits on the floor in the middle of my family room.  I never planned on having a changing pad on the floor.

When Gianna came early, I was still waiting on my husband to paint our changing table.  As the weeks dragged on I needed a place to change the baby in the family room, so the pad that was supposed to be used on the table became a fixture on our floor.  The baby began loving her time spent on the floor on her changing pad, so lucky for my husband, that changing table never needed painting!

The patented design of the Bottom’s Up Baby Gear changing pad cover makes clean-up a breeze for all of those “naked baby” accidents, too.  The cover is constructed with two parts: the plush top half to keep baby’s head comfy and the vinyl bottom half that can quickly be wiped clean with a baby wipe or disinfectant.  These pieces zipper together so it’s easy to throw the minky top into the wash when it’s seen a little too much changing action.  The best part is that you can order a changing pad cover to match your decor.  You choose both the color of the top fabric (9 color choices) as well as the bottom vinyl half (white or brown).  If you order two tops to go with your one bottom piece, you’ll never have to wait for the laundry to be done to use your changing pad.

It’s a more efficient and less messy solution to changing diapers…and “naked baby” time!

The Bottom’s Up Baby Gear changing pad can be ordered online for $39.98.  It makes a great baby shower gift and ships already gift-wrapped, so no need to worry about the wrapping!

Newborn Neccessities: Bounce Baby Bounce

As I mentioned in my previous post, Baby Gianna loves to move – whether we’re bouncing, walking or swinging, she loves the motion. That along with my trouble putting her down (she’s my first and she’s just so darn cute!) made it difficult to get her used to all the swings, seats and other contraptions we received from baby showers and hand-me-downs. As I learned how to put her down I also began to learn that she was very opinionated about where she was put down. Some of the products taking up space in my house only worked for a few weeks and sadly some of them never worked for Gianna at all. One of the things that she has always liked is the Baby Bjorn Babysitter Balance. As she gets bigger she enjoys it more and more. That’s why the Babysitter Balance is #5 on my list of Newborn Neccessities.

The Baby Bjorn Babysitter Balance is a bouncy seat that has offered me a sleek and efficient place to put Gianna while I take a shower, do the dishes, or shoot off a few quick emails.  The seat has three positions: sleep, rest and play.  We’ve always used the “play” position.  As she’s gotten older and more active she has learned to enjoy the bouncy nature of the seat and just loves to make it move on her own.  I’ve also quickly learned that she now knows how to scoot herself out of the seat, so we’re sure to strap her in with the reversible fabric strap.  It’s so easy to fold to take with us that it goes just about everywhere.

The Babysitter Balance is available in a variety of colors and even comes in an organic version, though all of them have washable fabric that’s guaranteed free from hazardous substances.  The retail price starts at about $120 and can be purchased at most large baby retailers including Diapers.com.

Newborn Neccessities: The Chicken Dance!

Every mom has their own signature style of getting a newborn baby to sleep.  Whether it’s rocking, bouncing, singing or driving around in the car – ask any mom and they’ll tell you exactly what worked for each of their children.  Early on I knew that my baby liked to move.  Sitting down was not allowed – Gianna would have none of that.  No, we had to be moving!  Tired of walking circles in my house and anxious to burn a little baby fat, I popped in a DVD that I had received when pregnant: Chicks-N-Chickens Lullaby Exercises.  That’s when I learned the “Chicken Dance”.  No, not the Chicken Dance that most couples put on their wedding “Do Not Play” list.  This DVD has a series of exercise dances to do with your infant, including their own version of the Chicken Dance.  And Gianna LOVES it!  Who knew that a simple box step with a few extra bounces could soothe my baby and get her to sleep within 5 minutes?  It’s been magical.  That’s why the Chicks-N-Chickens Lullaby Exercises DVD is #4 on my list of Newborn Neccessities.

Lullaby Exercises is a series of fun, easy-to-learn movements—dancing, swaying, stretching & relaxing—that are performed while holding a baby in your arms or in a baby carrier. It’s designed for new moms to share moments with their baby, put a little one to sleep, and to feel good emotionally and physically.  Many of the exercises would be easier on your arms if you used a baby carrier though it’s not necessary.  I didn’t use one and just figured it was an extra workout for my arms!  The DVD/CD combo is recommended for moms with babies 6 weeks old to pre-walking.  You can purchase it directly from the Chicks-N-Chickens website for $29.95.  You can also purchase several baby carriers from their site appropriate for the exercises.

Newborn Neccessities: Soothing the Boobies

I heard and read lots about how painful nursing could be, but until I experienced it myself I had NO idea.  The first few days were a breeze and I really thought that I was the exception.  I was sorely mistaken (no pun intended).  It took a full 8 weeks to stop wincing each time Gianna latched on.  With a lot of reassurance from friends and my Medela Breast Care Gift Set, I was able to successfully get through those tough days.  That’s why the Medela Breast Care Gift Set is #3 on my top ten list of Newborn Necessities.

Filled with nursing essentials, the gift set is a cute and compact solution to many early breastfeeding troubles.  The set contains 12 disposable bra pads, a 2oz tube of Tender Care Lanolin Advanced Nipple Therapy, 2 Tender Care Hydrogel pads, a Mother’s Minder bracelet, and an info/breastfeeding log.  Having all of these products together in one little bag made traveling super easy – especially since we went out of town for a wedding just 3 short weeks after Gianna arrived.

The breast care set would make an excellent gift for a baby shower or when visiting a new mommy.  Every nursing mother experiences some discomfort and frustration.  Share some relief and a little support with these tools.  The Medela Breast Care Gift Set can be purchased at Motherhood Maternity and Amazon.com from $24.

Newborn Necessities: Sassy toys for a sassy baby

In my top ten list of newborn necessities, Sassy baby toys takes #2.

I was given several Sassy toys for my baby shower, and I have to admit that I wasn’t super excited by them.  They didn’t look like anything a baby would be very interested in.  Boy was I wrong!  I started using Sassy’s baby ring rattle with Gianna when she was about a month old.  At that point she really wasn’t interested in any of her toys but after trying every newborn-appropriate toy in my basket, I decided to give the ring rattle a shot.

She was fascinated!  I’m not sure if it was the bold, black and white stripes or the noise of the smaller green rings clacking together or a combination of the two.  Whatever it was that got her attention, she watched that ring rattle for 20 minutes.  So for the first 3 months of her life, that Sassy toy was our go-to attention grabber.  She’d lay on my lap for a half hour at a time just staring at it.  Making faces and silly noises at a baby is fun to a point, but 30 minutes of it can be exhausting.  The ring rattle saved me from all of that!  I loved it so much that I’ve bought two of them for friends with babies on the way.

Sassy designs toys with the advice of child development experts, ensuring that all of their products are not only fun but that they also help children developmentally. Their toys are of the highest quality with no unsafe plastics or paints used.

I have several other Sassy toys for older babies and I can’t wait until Gianna is old enough to play with them. I’m sure she’ll love them just as much.

Sassy toys can be purchased at Babies ‘R Us, Amazon.com and other large retailers. The best part is that most of their toys only cost a few dollars!

Newborn Necessities: Mama Needs Coffee!

It’s hard to believe but my little peanut is already 3 months old.  These past few months have been an amazing (and tiring!) adventure.  Besides the helping hands of my friends and family, there are several baby products that have literally kept me sane.  Over the next few days I’m going to share my 10 favorites.

#1 – Keurig Mini Brewer

What a time saver!  I’m not a huge coffee drinker…especially since I’m breastfeeding now, but both of the grandmas are.  And because the grandmas are over a few times each week to lend a hand, having coffee available is a must.  The Keurig Mini Brewer has made coffee a breeze.  It’s so easy that you can brew a cup with just one hand; perfect while holding a baby!  All you have to do is plug in the machine, pour a coffee cup of water into the reservoir, pop in your preferred flavor and press “Brew”.

In under 3 minutes, you’ll have an 8 oz. cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate!  And even though I don’t use mine frequently, I leave it on the counter because it’s so small.  And ok, I really like the fact that it’s bright red.  The brewer can be purchased directly from the Keurig website for $89.95 or from a number of national retailers, including Bed Bath and Beyond, Kohl’s, and JCPenney.  K-cups can be found in most retailers, and they have such a variety that you’re sure to find a favorite or two.  S0 for any new mommies or mommies-to-be, the Keuring Mini is definitely a great purchase (or registry item!) for you and any helpers you may have.
