Downward Facing Mommy

I love yoga class. I love the music, I love the atmosphere. I love that I get to spend the last three minutes of class lying in corpse pose, and that I'm not supposed to do anything except relax my face and focus on my breath. How great is that?

But the getting there was always kind of hectic. I was usually the one running into the gym two minutes before class started, in my last clean T-shirt with my unrolled yoga mat tucked hastily under my arm. After getting my kindergartener on the bus and dropping my preschooler off before the start of circle time, I was left darting around like a maniac so I could leave my toddler in the childcare center, get to the studio, set down my mat and find some inner peace.

I have, however, found one thing to make those morning jaunts to yoga at least a bit less crazy, and a lot more stylish (though I confess, I'm still wearing the same pair of ratty black yoga pants I've had for years) ... a yoga mat bag. It's Bagnificent makes fabulous ones (yoga and pilates style) that are cute and functional.

I purchased a bag when I finally grew tired of fishing my unrolled mat from the cavernous, dusty recesses of my minivan ... and I'll tell you, I'm like a new yogi! I always get tons of compliments on my mat bag (I have the Good and Plenty pattern shown below), and it's way cuter than the usual suspects you see at Target. And at only $20-25 each, the price is comparable to discount store wares, and much cheaper than higher-end styles I've seen. They come in so many great patterns, have a drawstring closure to keep your mat from sliding out, and (best of all) a sturdy strap for easy carrying. Now my mat stays rolled up and clean, and my hands are free to carry other things (or children, as the case usually is).

In addition to the mat bags, the designer also does custom orders, including gym and tote bags (you can match your mat bag or go for an entirely different print!). She can also customize a mat bag to fit extra towels, yoga bricks or straps. Prices for custom orders vary, but average at around $40.

Mommies With Style readers will get a free pocket or free monogramming with any mat bag order. Just order on-line as usual, then send an email to the address on the site and note that you found them through Mommies With Style. So check it out ... a more centered mommy might just be in your future. Namaste.

Get Daddy Hooked on the Bag Craze!

Father's Day isn't too long from now, and we're starting to worry, "what is the perfect gift for a dad?" Put yourself in Daddy's shoes: you're married to a Mommy with Style who obsesses over the BEST diaper bag to fit her lifestyle... and it has to look cute and sassy. Hmmmm... what's a dad to do?

That's what the guys at Dad Gear were thinking when they developed their baby line made just for men. They were ordinary businessmen and fathers who recognized that the world of baby products wasn't too Dad-friendly. So they set about to create not just stylish products for men, but products that worked and fit their lifestyles.

At first glance my husband's comment was: that's a backpack. Its nice looking, but its a backpack. (Meaning, and I had to draw the content out for this: I don't see any of the frills and flair in your diaper bags.) He was hesitant, so I packed it up, and stuck the DadGear Backpack in our truck.

About 2 stops later, I didn't have a need to carry my adorable bag--he was all about the DadGear Backpack! First, the size is made for a man. Most of the backpacks that are "neutral" are still smaller and made for a Mom's body. But DadGear Backpacks are created for, well, Dads, with a wider (12") and taller (18") back. Plus, the back is padded!! (Okay, I may be a petite Mommy, but I'm a little jealous of the comfort of the padding on the back of this bag. There's no way a shoe or an extra wipes case that's shoved in will be poking me when its padded!)

The pockets on this backpack are an organized parent's dream. DadGear thought of it all--my favorite is the "diaper hammock." At the top of the bag there is a compartment large enough to fit several large size diapers so they don't get lost, smushed or covered in dirt floating throughout the bag. And my husband commented that this feature made for VERY easy access--afterall, when he changes a diaper, which admittedly isn't often, he's got it down to a speedy routine.

Talk about ease, in addition to the 2 mesh side pockets on the outside of the bag, there are also 2 zippered bottle pockets on the sides--that camoflauge their use and just look like normal pockets. In the front of the bag is a, are you sitting down?, wipes holder! You just thread the wipes through and when you need one, pull down the velcro flap and--tada!--you have a nice, clean wipe popping out at you!! No need to rummage with those dirty hands when you NEED a wipe. (Come on, we have husbands, you know what they're like when they NEED a wipe!)

The bag is stuffable, too. We've been attempting to potty train our older son for months now and the weekend we first tried out the DadGear Backpack, we brought along at least 3 changes of clothing--including an additional pair of shoes. The main section held it all--with plenty of room to spare. There's also a middle section for Dad's stuff with a key clip (one of my diaperbag requirements) and a variety of slot pockets. Dad has a place for everything--his PDA, blackberry, rattle, ipod, wallet, sippy cup and sunglasses.

My favorite part? This bag has everything Dad's could need for baby-tending for a day or two (or three...), its hidden away so that it looks like a stylish men's bag he could use for hiking or the beach, and its lightweight with durable hardware. (Did someone say hardware? Sorry Dad, we discuss hardware in a whole new way!)

DadGear didn't stop at Backpacks. Check out their other products like jackets and vests.

Dads will love this one: sports paraphernalia for your baby

It doesn't take much to get me excited about a baby/toddler product, but it takes a lot to evoke the same reaction in my husband. So a shipment that arrived from Coed Sportswear was definitely one of the more thrilling packages to arrive in his opinion as it was about time we had some more "manly" products in the house for our son.

Coed Sportswear sells baby products with various major sports teams branded on them. Of course, we got all Philadelphia Eagles items for the 2 year old Eagles fan who lives in our house. But they have most major sports teams (baseball, basketball and football.)

Their site can be a bit difficult to navigate. When you click through to the homepage, be sure to select "consumer" to make a purchase. To purchase one of the blankets pictured, either search by your sports team, or type in "Snuggleball." (FYI, you can also get generic non-sports teams ones if you don't have a favorite team.)

Unfortunately, some of their other baby sports items are not pictured on the website, but you can also purchase: sippy cups, bottles, straw sippies, rattles and more. I recommend calling the number and requesting a catalog or ordering over the phone. Trust me, if your guy (or you) is sports fan, he'll be thrilled for you to order any of the baby items Co-ed Sportswear offers.

To receive 10% off your order (retailers and consumers), you need to call in or fax your order. The code is CoedSB. Here are the phone and fax numbers:

C is For Cookie

The first step in managing an addiction is admitting you have a problem. As Lucy says to Charlie Brown "the very fact that you realize you have a problem indicates that you are not too far gone." Well, that Lucy always seemed pretty smart (and definitely worth that nickel therapy fee), so here it goes .. . I am addicted to cookie cutters. Not the crappy plastic ones that you get in packs of 100 (I long ago sacrificed all of those to the Play-Doh box), I'm a discriminating addict ... metal cutters only for this girl. I have a small chest with drawers that are each labeled and categorized ... clearly, I have issues.

Since I've come this far, I will also share that my most ardent affection is reserved for my copper cutters. They are so lovely and each one like a mini work of art! My current favorite is my bikini cookie cutter (two pieces, can also be a bra and underwear set, depending on how you decorate it ... great for bridal showers!!).

After searching high and low, I have found my dealer of choice in Copper Gifts. If you can think of an object, odds are that Copper Gifts will have a cookie cutter shaped like it. Each one is beautifully crafted and handmade. Best of all, their site is also full of recipes, decorating ideas and more. With almost every cutter you can see several different ideas for how to decorate that shape. I guarantee, you'll be inspired to channel your inner Martha and bake up some pretty cookies! I'm totally coveting the flip flip (so cute for summer!). And the crown. Ooooh, and this dress. But I can stop anytime. Really, I can.

Note: I added a post on the Recipe boards with my favorite roll-out sugar cookie and icing recipes. Check it out for some extra inspiration!

12 weeks pregnant: Belly Beats Doppler ($5 off !)

For those of you who don't frequent our message boards, you may have missed that I'm pregnant. I'm 12 weeks in, with what feels like a long way to go!

Consider this my first "installment" of what I hope to be weekly updates of products I'm using throughout my pregnancy. My first product review is one I used with my son's pregnancy: a Belly Beats doppler. A nervous pregnant person the first time around, the doppler provided me with the security of hearing my son whenever I wanted. I thought I'd rent it a short while and send it back once I felt movement - but I loved hearing his little heart beating whenever I wanted, that I kept it until we came home from the hospital.

Although I'm way more laid back this time, I wanted to rent a doppler again. I went straight back to Belly Beats, where the price had gone down since I had my son.

I'm renting the standard doppler - it's the no frills doppler, and it comes with a 2 oz sample of ultrasound lotion (you won't need any more unless you're doing it every night) and a couple Preggie Pops. It all comes in a nice box with easy instructions and return postage for when you're ready to send it back. The standard doppler rents for $25 a month.

You can also rent a digital doppler (will tell you the heartbeat count) for $45 a month.

Use coupon code MWS5 for $5 a month off your order (a great deal!) for however many months you rent. I can't recommend it enough - the customer service at Belly Beats is fast, and the thrill of hearing your baby's heart whenever you want can't be replaced.

Note: I will say that it can be hard to find the heartbeat in your early stages of pregnancy. It's important to remember that if you rent one.

Skirt Chaser

Anyone who has zipped their favorite jeans while laying down on their bed (been there) or fastened their skirt while holding their breath (done that) while simultaneously praying to the closet gods that it will fit, and cursing the washing machine fairies for "shrinking" it, will love these skirts by Libby Dibby.

If you have been around the boards at all lately, you've probably all seen the buzz. I have to say mommies, these skirts are worthy of the hoopla. I got mine, and it is fabulous! So here's why they're so great. The skirts wrap around with a pretty little grossgrain ribbon, which is perfect for girls who are trying to get into their pre-baby size (even though, for some of us, our "baby" is sailing right through the toddler years!), or simply in between sizes. I have never liked wraparound skirts before, because in my limited experience with them, they always seem to fly open at the most inopportune moments (is there a good one?). But Libby Dibby skirts are made with a heavy enough fabric that it drapes nicely and keeps your private parts, um ... private.

The style and fit of the skirts is universally flattering. It's just as comfortable as the standard uniform of jeans and T-shirts, and way more fashionable. And here's the cherry on top ... ready? The skirts are reversible! Are the clouds above you opening up and playing music too? Because really, that is just pure genius!
Not only do you get two great pieces for the price of one, the next time your little one uses you as their personal splat mat when you're out and about, just flip that baby around and you are good to go!

Hurry and shop through May 15 to receive an exclusive discount of 15% off. After that, MWS friends can shop through June 30 and get 10% off their order (just send an email with a mention of Mommies With Style for either promotion, and the appropriate discount will be refunded).

Note: The standard size skirts fit most women from about size 6-12. If you are smaller or bigger than that, you'll want to contact Libby Dibby to order a small or large size. (For one point of reference, I am 5'1" and usually between a size 4 and 6. The standard size was very big and almost to my ankles. I could make it work around the waist by wrapping the ribbon around twice, but it was really long). Dry cleaning and a warm iron is recommended.

Congrats to our Isabella Oliver winner

Congrats to Anne-Marie of MA, for winning last week's Isabella Oliver giveway.

Look for another great one coming soon!

Robeez: adorable fashion for baby feet

I never realized the multitude of options available to keep my baby's feet warm and clean. With my first, I stuck to socks--didn't even bother to explore soft-soled shoes. Comparably, my baby's feet are SO spoiled!

Today, he's wearing his Robeez Trainers in Royal, one of Robeez' top sellers. Like mini-athletic shoes, Wes looks like he's about to run off--and he would if he could! The shoes stay on securely--slipping right on to his feet and staying there. And when you take him to the park to "practice" and come home with grass stains--no problem! Robeez are washable to stay super-clean looking.

Robeez are made of durable leather. The outside, which usually has an adorable design (like their new sharks, featured here) is made of buttery leather. And the inside is lined in leather, too. All Robeez feature a soft leather bottom which prevents slipping--something you DON'T want to occur as baby is learning to walk.

Enter your name and address to join Robeez' newsletter--you'll get special announcements and learn of their sales before your neighbor.

Mother's Day Gifts to Remember

I’ll admit—I often wrack my brain trying to figure out what to get the special moms in my life for Mother’s Day. I want it to be personal, thoughtful, and unique. So I was happy to run across a recent article in Maryland Life magazine featuring Five Sisters Fine Art and Painted Tiles.

Five Sisters offers one of a kind hand painted tiles, murals and home décor objects. I’m a huge fan of their stemware—they’re so much fun! Add a favorite bottle of wine (something we've had a lot of fun discussing here) and I think you've found yourself one happy mama.

And while you’re shopping on the site, check out the hand-painted sandals for the mommy who has a serious passion for shoes.

Order your tiles by May 1st in time for Mother’s Day. Don’t forget to mention Mommies With Style when you place your order to receive free shipping.

Happy Early Mother’s Day Everyone!

Batteries Not Required

You know, they really don't make kid's stuff like they used to. I know. Saying that officially makes me a grandma. But I just hate that everything seems to make noise, blaze neon, feature huge cartoon characters in life-size dimensions, or require a degree in rocket science to assemble. They even make shoes that light up for crying out loud! I ask you, what circumstance would call for someone's feet to light up? It's enough to drive a mommy crazy!

Thankfully, there's Blabla. They make items with a sweet simplicity, and it feels like a welcome break from all the flash and sound. I love these fruit-shaped baby rattles (a huge hit at the last baby shower I gave them at)! They are cute and squishy, and perfect for little ones who want to chew on everything! And how adorable are these animal face backpacks? My toddler has the dalmation and the ladybug and they are just the right size for her. (Note: the straps are not adjustable, so they may fall down on little shoulders). I am currently coveting these cute little strap bags, which I think that really ... every toddler girl must have.

Blabla products are hand-knitted by Peruvian artists, made from all-natural fibers and the quality is evident in each piece. Most importantly, the designs are whimsical, the colors are fun and bright, and every item is cuddly and soft!

The products, including the bags and rattles, as well as soft toys, very hip clothes and more, can be purchased from Blabla's web site and at select stores and on-line retailers. Check Oompa for a wide selection and get 5% off with the code monkey10 and free shipping on all orders over $65.

Baby Emi Jewelry: great for Mother's Day, 15% off

I've seen a lot of Mommy and Baby jewelry and the pieces on BabyEmiJewelry are gorgeous. She sells Mommy, Grandma and "pint-sized" bracelets. Each bracelet is handcrafted with Swarovski crystals, Swarovski simulated pearls, gemstones, beads and more.

I love the Bella Bella Name bracelet for a gift to Moms, as well as some of the girls' bracelets. Her prices are very competitive as well.

Check it out and use coupon code MWS for 15% off your order.

Free Scoop Day at Ben and Jerry's

Get out of the house and enjoy the weather--and a yummy waffle cone with a delish scoop of your favorite! April 25 will mark Ben and Jerry's 28th year, and to celebrate, they're offering their favorite customers (ie you, me, everyone!) a free scoop between noon and 8 pm.

I'm initiating spring with a waffle of strawberry cheesecake ice cream. YUM!

Nature's Baby Products: 100% natural

Nature's Baby Products was created by a Mom who did not want to put any products on her child that included chemicals in their ingredient list. So she developed Nature's Baby Products -- every ingredient in each product being 100 percent derived from nature.

They sell Shampoo, Body Wash & Conditioner, body lotion and diaper care products (diaper rash cream and a diaper pail deodorizer). What's nice about each of the products too is that they all have a subtle, natural scent.

None of the products are overwhelming in their scents (a pet peeve of mine with some products). Some of the scents you can purchase include Vanilla-Tangerine and Lavender-Chamomile.

Free shipping on an order of $100 or more.

3 GREAT books for when your child becomes a big brother or big sister

We're expecting our second child and like most parents we've been worried about how our two year old will adjust to this big change in our lives. He's had our complete and total adoration and undivided attention for the past two years and suddenly his whole world is going to change. We've worried that he'll be jealous, upset, sad or just forlorn about this new addition when what we want is for it to be an exciting, happy experience instead.

Since we feel books are a great way to introduce new situations to our child, I asked several friends for book recommendations and then hit the web myself to see what was out there on this topic. Here's what I came up with and three of our child's favorites, he often chooses these books from the bookshelf and asks us to read them to him again and again:

I'm a Big Brother by Joanna Cole costs $6.99. This book also comes in a big sister version called I'm a Big Sister by the same author. These books are great at capturing a child's voice and explaining what babies are like. They also share with children what they as a sibling can do with a newborn and it reassures the older sibling that his parents love him.

My New Baby by Annie Kubler costs $3.99. This book is a picture book without words so it can be told to your child differently each time you look at it, which our child loves! I really get a kick out of how many pictures in this book show the husband doing everything from changing the baby's diaper to cooking! Our son loves pulling this one off the bookshelf to look at the pictures on his own.

The New Baby by Mercer Mayer costs $3.29. This book is about a "critter" who gets a new sister and discovers how many different ways he can play with her.

All three of these books have been so great in helping prepare our child for our new baby! Our lives are now just days away from being magically changed forever and we really feel that our child is ready and excited to meet his new baby brother. All three books can be bought on Amazon.com and they are eligible for free shipping when you spend $25 or more.

Allow me to introduce you to the Skip*Hop Duo Double

Yes, you read that right. A Duo Double.

Skip*Hop is answering the prayers of every side-by-side stroller owner I know. They've created a bag that attaches and hangs from the handles of a double stroller (in my case, it attaches perfectly to my Mac TT.) Basically adding another half to the Duo, this bag measures 18.5 inches wide x 14 inches high x 4.5 inches deep.

Using the same durable canvas material as their other products, the Duo Double includes the messenger strap, but this time, it also includes tote handles, which makes carrying this super-large bag pretty simple.

I'm in pocket heaven. Ladies, let me tell you, this bag has pockets-- over 15 pockets! On the back are two large, flat pockets (one, which is about as large as the single pocket on the back of the regular Duo, holds the traditional Skip*Hop changing pad; the other is about half the size.) The front of the bag has 3 pockets, all about the same size, and they close with magnetic snaps, which means no messing around with velcro. A diapee and wipee will easily fit in each. {As I'm writing the review, I'm finding even more pockets!} Inside one of these pockets is a smaller pocket--perfect for your cell. And inside another are pen holders. The next pocket is along the top of the bag. This pocket zippers shut and is a shallow pocket--very long--similar to the zippered pockets along the top of the other Skip-Hops, only a lot longer. And it includes an absolute necessity for any bag -- a key clip!!!

The interior of the bag is no longer black! My red canvas bag has a red nylon interior--no more black hole effect with this creation. Along the sides are the pockets that hold the clips for attaching the bag to the stroller, these pockets easily double as bottle pockets. Along the interior back of the bag are three mesh pockets--just like the two in the duo. Along the front interior are two more very large pockets. And, are you sitting down?, this whole section zippers shut so that if it tips, you won't have to worry about everything from the tote section falling all over the place (which happens way too often in my car).

Are you keeping count? Don't forget the fantastic side mesh bottle pockets--they wouldn't leave these out.

Wondering if this bag is for you? Check (and then buy this bag) if you:
___have mulitples (twins, triplets, etc.)
___use a side-by-side stroller
___have two or more children and need to carry for them
___have one child and carry everything plus the kitchen sink
___rely on pockets, pockets and more pockets

The Duo Double is large, yet still has a remarkably slim profile, has significant space for all of your mommy items and baby items, is organized beyond belief, and, and this is my favorite part, attaches to a DOUBLE stroller--something I had yet to find anywhere!

Oh, and the all-important question: colors? The Duo Double is available in Red, Black with red piping, Navy, Olive, Green Camo, Olive and, coming this summer, stripe!

Order the new Duo Double from Lets Go Strolling. They are offering a Free Little Pocket Snack Pouch with a Skip Hop Dou Double purchase and a coupon for $10 off your next Let's Go Strolling purchase of $100 or more. Coupon code MWSDD.

Plus it’s labeled as safe to use on children as young as six months.

Trendy handmade blankets in full and travel size at AllyZabba

Now that I have made reviewing baby products a job, to put it bluntly, I'm constantly amazed at the amount of crappy baby products I used on my son. What I mean is that I feel a blanket from a place like AllyZabba and I wonder why the heck I bothered with a Gerber blanket from Babies R Us because these blankets are so much higher-end and worthy of a baby than any cheap cotton blanket out there.

The blankets from AllyZabba are plush and cozy. They have the varied sides -- intriguing for infants hands -- the one side is made of
raised microfiber plush fabric and the other, silky polyester satin backing. (The backing always comes in the signature polka-dot fabric).

Each purchase on AllyZabba is gift wrapped in a cute tulle-like bag that's tied with a bow. The full sized blankets are $59.95 and the travel sized blankets are currently on sale for $19.95. Use coupon code "withstyle" at checkout and receive 10% off your order (includes sale prices).

Chic, Custom Stationery at 15% off!

I consider myself a pretty knowlegable person when it comes to stationery. After all, I sell it myself! So you know it has to be really great when I go outside of my own stuff to get something else. Which is exactly what I did with Lauren Goessling Designs. Lauren, the owner and creator, certainly knows how to come up with fun, unique, contemporary, custom stationery at affordable prices!

Lauren has great stationery items for boys, girls, and adults. One of the greatest features are the numerous choices you can make... from color and font to icon and... best of all... envelope color! I love the blue and chocolate note cards I recently got with the matching chocolate envelope.

She was also extremely easy to work with and helped me visualize some of my options prior to ordering... what great customer service!

Just Right ... Bags and More by Elisa Lou

I am the Goldilocks of toddler totes. I've tried so many. Some were too big. Some were too small. But I think the bucket bags by Elisa Lou may be just right. Here's what I like. It has the open top of a tote bag , which means it's easy to grab whatever you need quickly. But the thing that really won me over was that it also has a long (42") strap, so it has the hands-free convenience of a messenger bag. To me, it's the perfect combination.

If you're a pack-so you're-ready-for-everything kind of girl, Elisa Lou also makes messenger bags, which are very roomy, and have great features like internal pockets and (what I think EVERY bag should have) a key chain clip ... love it! And, just added - several new styles, including the small bucket bag and the Mary Jane bag, and lots of new spring fabrics.

Shop Elisa Lou for the bags, as well as other fabulous products, including baby blankets and jewelry. Mommies With Style readers will receive a FREE BELT (valued at $20) with any $50 purchase through May 31. Enter the code MWS and your fabric selection for the belt in the comments section at checkout.

Geotrax: a great Thomas alternative

When our one year old started becoming obsessed with trains we weren't exactly thrilled with the prospect of adding a Thomas the Train table to our home decor. We delayed getting anything train related as long as possible until finally we caved a few months ago.

One night while we were toy shopping we stumbled upon a train set we fell in love with: the Fisher Price GeoTrax Rail and Road System. It appealed to us for several reasons: 1) we could set it up on the floor in a corner and 2) it was expandable and looked like so much fun with all the available accessories. We bought the Workin' Town Railway when our son was 21 months old and he, as well as us, have been totally hooked ever since!

He seriously plays with this toy every day! For his birthday just recently we expanded the set and he loves the bridges and elevated tracks. Being able to add to this toy and change the tracks around to different layouts means this toy's novelty stays fresh! The tracks are also easy to manipulate, so easy in fact that our child mastered putting them together himself. Your child can also either choose to push the trains OR he can use a remote control and watch the train propel itself around the tracks. The remote even emits the realistic sound of a train's whistle and the sound of a train chugging down the tracks. Fisher Price also has a website that provides track layout ideas.

The Workin' Town Railway is a thirty piece set which includes a three car train, remote control, two "factory" sites, and the bonus set comes with an additional water tower, steam engine and brown train. It can be purchased at Amazon for $39.99.

Perfect for a Picnic

I love spring! I love the flowers, the t-shirts and shorts, running in the park, and park days and picnics! Always looking for ways to make my days easier, I'm so glad I found BuiltNY.

BuiltNY creates products for our lifestyle--making life simple, styled and smart. In their baby line, I'm most impressed with the strolling totes--which easily holds a bottle, pacifier, toy and snack inside--great for a long walk through the neighborhood and attaches with velcro to the stroller handle--no more searching through the basket while you're running, its all in this extremely lightweight bag! Also in their baby line are bibs and single and double thirsty totes.

The BuiltNY Lunch Tote is a personal fave. Its been wonderful to zip my son's lunch inside--easily fits a disposible sandwich container, a snack and a drink. And my husband is already asking for the six pack--not only is it great for tailgating, but he mentioned that its a comfort item--once its empty, its a warm seat cushion!

The lightweight and flexible (so you can smush it away when its empty or lay it flat) BuiltNY products are insulated and can be machine washed.

Budding Family Albums Make Sense of your Kid's World

Its that time of year. The flowers are in bloom and realtor signs are popping up on lawns from coast to coast. Here in my neighborhood the signs vy for attention with a new spate of giant wooden storks announcing new arrivals. It's all exciting - these new beginnings. But for a young child, these changes can be incredibly stressful.

That's why Budding Family founder Renee Raab Whitcombe, came up with her personalized "Look Who's..." albums. Designed from a 4-7yo child's perspective, the albums are really personalized books that address children's fears and questions about a move, or the arrival of a new sibling. The books chase away anxiety and help turn these world-rocking events into a positive, memorable experiences. Your child will have no problem relating to the main character in their book - since it is them! They are bound to be read over and over again. And they will be cherished as a timecapsule of your child's life for years to come.

I love this concept so much that I only wish that Renee would come up with some albums for other tricky kid situations. Like "Look Who's Using the Potty!" and "Look Who's Going to School!". OK, maybe not the potty one. But you have to admit it would make for some excellent blackmail material a few years down the road.

Mommies With Style readers recieve a special discount when you order from the Budding Family website. Just enter code MWS1 for 10% off your entire order, excluding shipping.

Funky, fun fabric bags at the Keeta Collection

Here are some fun and different bags: the Keeta Collection makes some great bags.

Their messenger bags make great diaper bags. They're made of a mix of two different fabrics, creating a cool look and contrast. The inside has plenty of pockets on both sides for bottles, diapers and more. There's also a "Keeta clip" for your keys (this is vital for me, because I'm always losing my keys to the bottomless abyss of my bags.)

Their bags can also customized however you like - so contact them if you have any specific bag needs.

Check the Keeta Collection out and write "mommies with style" in the note section of the Paypal checkout for an instant rebate of 15% off your purchase.

The Mother of All Mama Necklaces

I have been drooling over these Tali Gillette Mama necklaces for what seems like forever. But since my jewelry budget is somewhat less than Gweneth's (who wears hers proudly), I have yet to pick one up.

The price is steep (between $525 and $1,995), but there' s nothing like a good coupon code to take the edge off.

Use Mama10 at Totally Tots and More for 10% off your order through May 31. Feel free to email this link to your husband (or for that matter, mine) ... Mother's Day is right around the corner!

Sweet Little Baskets For May Day and Beyond

There's a few things that people just don't tell you about having kids. They tell you about the lack of sleep, the mess, the general havoc that pregnancy and kids can wreak on your body, home and schedule. But it's the little things ...

I personally, never knew that maternal law required my purse to be the resting place, not only for diapers wipes and a few things of my own ... but also for all the things my kids (and sometimes my husband) insist on bringing with them, but get tired of carrying. The Wolverine action figure? Check. Plastic dinosaur figures? Got 'em. My husband's sunglasses and my daughter's blankie? Uh-huh. It's all in there. And all this for a quick run to Target.

For the most part, I've accepted this new role as the carrier of all things for all people. I've invested in a few fashionable mommy bags (right now I'm alternating between my black Kate Spade and my pink Seatbelt messenger bags) and they are just fine thank you very much. Perfectly respectable for a fashion-conscious girl like me. But sometimes, I find myself missing the cute little purses of my pre-offspring days. The adorable little clutches ...those bags that held nothing but a lipstick, keys and my driver's license. Oh the freedom!

Well, the Phyliss' Fleur a Deux bag , by the aptly named company, My Cute Bag, is just the thing to entice me back to my days of carrying, ummm, well .... cute little bags. Just in time for spring, the bag is made from a 4x4" basket with wood handle, lined with vintage-inspired fabric, adorned with an adorable silk flower (in your choice of three colors), a jeweled clasp and a ribbon closure.

And the greatest thing about it, is that it looks just as fabulous perched on a shelf as it does as a purse. So, since on most days, the necessity of my mommy bag will have to prevail, my Fleur a Deux can earn its keep corralling the jewelry on my dresser, until a kid-free outing affords me the pleasure of carrying it.

The bags retail for $25, but Mommies With Style Readers will receive 25% off their purchase of one, using the code mws. Shop for the Phyliss' Fleur a Deux on the company's web site, and don't forget peek at their other styles as well!

Get 'nspired: collect your baby's memories with class

Even with digital cameras, it happens. The piles of photos that were ordered start collecting. Each is too cute, too sweet, or too funny to toss. And, so, the shoe boxes fill. And every once in a while, someone will find a shoe box and spend hours pouring over it, rubbing fresh thumbprints over older ones, dog-earring the favorites, and even covering them with crumbs from cookies and buttery grease from popcorn. There MUST be a better way!

There is. 'Nspire Baby has created gorgeous and classy albums to collect and preserve your photos. These aren't you're mom's boring albums; the hardcover photo album is covered in a quilted fabric -- themed for a boy or a girl. Additionally, 'Nspire produces brag books and memory books (which can be used as beautiful scrapbooks.)

Before my oldest was born, I was shocked I didn't receive any memory books or albums. This is a gift that all new moms will treasure. There is nothing like preserving a memory.

Order now! You'll receive a 10% refund on your order when you mention Mommies with Style in the comments section. I'd stock up on several--they make beautiful shower gifts, new mom gifts and precious brag books for the ever-so-doting "Nana."

Themed burp cloths from Baby Island Boutique

Burp cloths always make great gifts as you can never have too many. The "burpies" on Baby Island Boutique make great gifts as they come in packs of two, and each of them have cute themes and fabrics.

They're also reasonably priced for burp clothes - $17.00 for two. (And these are a nice quality, thick burp cloth - not like those cheapee ones you get at BRU for 10 to a pack that don't soak up spit up and always left me wondering why anyone bothered.)

Use coupon code MWS for 10% off your order on Baby Island Boutique, expires June 15, 2006.

Cozy Cocoons take the wads out of swaddling

Last week I needed a baby gift for a neighbor who has it all. I ordered a cotton, leopard print swaddling sack from Cozy Cocoon. Even if you have it all, I figured, a little leopard print can't hurt. Plus that matching “gnome” hat? Irresistable!

Cozy Cocoons are an absolutely brilliant and simple concept. So much so, that I whacked myself on the forehead when I saw one. Why didn’t I think of that? Made of soft stretchy cotton knit, and shaped somewhat like a sock, you roll the cocoon up over the baby and viola! Snug as a bug in a rug. Nothing to wrap. Nothing to tuck. No Velcro and no fuss.

The experts, like Dr. Harvey Karp, all recommend swaddling. In short; babies love it. They feel safe, secure and peaceful when they are bound. It is good for them. It is even believed to lower the incidence of SIDS.

My son Fox loved being swaddled. I was amazed at how much easier it was to soothe him and nurse him when he was bundled up. He was able to sleep longer and more soundly when swaddled. He did not startle as easily or scratch himself in his sleep. The only problems we had were with the blankets unwrapping and bunching up. That's where I sprang into action. Day or night. Never mind unicyclists, knife throwers and flaming sword swallowers. I was a one woman talent show with my Zen-like rapid baby wrapping skills. I could soothe a baby in ten seconds flat. I had studied the maternity nurses and apprenticed with elderly grandmas alike. Unfortunately my mom and husband had not. And woe to the caregiver that could not wrap him up quickly and properly! We all wish they'd had a cozy cocoon.

I did not give that Cozy Cocoon to my neighbor after all. I tested it on her baby, to be sure it worked, but I loved it so much that I had to keep it for myself. Just in case I someday decide to have another child. I would not want to go into it without this stretchy, cotton, leopard stroke of simple genius.

Instead, I gave my neighbor some cute little clothes for the baby. She thanked me politely. But I think she really wanted the Cocoon!

Cozy Cocoons come in a number of colors and styles, including Organic and tye dyed. Mommies with Style click here for a super special discount page, that includes some exclusive new styles. This offer is good through the end of April.

Zhen and the Art of Mommy Maintenance

I have been a fan of Zhen cosmetics since I went to one of their sample sales (ooohhh .... sample sale!) a few years ago. The Minnesota-based company, started by four sisters, began creating cosmetics specifically for women with yellow-undertoned skin. However, their product line (which has gotten props from beauty bibles like Glamour, Vogue and In Style) has grown to include many different cosmetics and skin care products that women of all complexions can use and love.

Their waterproof eye pencil is awesome and lasts forever (even through a 90-minute kickboxing class!), and I love their tinted moisturizer with SPF 15.

Make sure you check their web site often, as they have an awesome Deal of the Day promotion. Check out their current promo here. Or, check out this deal ... get 30% off any purchase $30 or more. Just put the code #19APR in the comments section. Good through April 20.

Get Naked For 30% Off

So, Jennifer Garner and I have something in common. Unfortunately, it's not perfectly toned triceps (wouldn't you just kill for that girl's arms??) ... it is our common appreciation for Naked Paint's line of bath and body products.

Beginning as the brainchild of two best friends in a a tiny apartment kitchen,
Naked Paint has a whole line of handmade and hand-packaged goodies that are free of alcohol, fillers and petroleum by-products (and with a name like Naked Paint, it's really hard to go wrong!).

Apparently, the lovely Mrs. Affleck used and loved their Belly Butter ($35 for 8 oz.) all through her pregnancy, and I can see why. It is lightly scented with jasmine and heather oils (not too strong for a pregnant girl's hypersensitive nose and queasy stomach!) and super thick. And while I, (in my wholly unscientific opinion) am a firm believer that stretch marks are hereditary and predestined (you either get them or you don't, regardless of what goes on that tummy!), the cream is said to increase skin's elasticity. This may reduce stretch marks, but it will for sure feel great and minimize that dry, itchiness that can drive a mommy-to be crazy! Non-pregnant girls can also use the cream as a moisturizer. While I found it (you might disagree) a bit too thick for a whole-body cream, it was fabulous for hands and feet!

My favorite, though was the
jealous? body scrub ($21 for 12 oz.). I am a die-hard scrub connoisseur. I've tried them all, and this one gets a gold star! Made with lots of good-for-skin ingredients like sweet almond and papaya oils and French green clay, the scrub is gentle enough to use a few times a week. Note that, in the jar, it looks a bit more crumbly than your typical scrub, and I was afraid it wouldn't "spread" well. But I was pleasantly surprised, and I ended up liking how there wasn't the usual layer of oil that tends to float to the top of the jar. I used the scrub from shoulders to toe (it's not intended for your face, so skip the head!) and even my heels were smooth as a baby's you-know-what.

Mommies With Style readers can shop Naked Paint and receive 30% off (woo-hoo!) purchases through July 31 with the code mommiespromo. Check it out!

Appaman T-shirt club: fun prints, popular with the celebs

Appaman makes fun tees, designs that are created out of the mind of a Scandinavian designer who lives in Brookyn. Many of the designs have a vintage feel to them.

They sell boys and girls tees, skirts for girls and more. The tees sell for $25-32 each, or you can buy four for $100.

This week's People Magazine (April 17, 2006) said that both Angelina Jolie and Gwen Stefani are fans of Appaman's onesies.

Too cute baby shower invites

I recently opened my mailbox up and found a baby bottle inside, stashed with my usual pile of bills and magazines.

It was clear, filled with multi-colored confetti and included a scroll-shape invite that was rolled and stuffed inside the bottle. My mailing address was pasted right on the bottle with a label. I thought it was an adorable invitation!

Of course I followed the link to the manfacturer and found them on Marketing in a Bottle. Your best best cost-wise is the "Baby Kit" where you put it all together yourself - it's $22.99 for 10, which isn't much more than you'd spend on a regular baby shower invite.

Originality ... Brought to You by Miele Fresca

Now, please don't mistake me. I love Gap as much as the next girl, I really do. They are the tan mini van of family apparel ... solid, dependable, with a few bells and whistles if you want them. Their low-rise flares and solid tees are my wardrobe bread and butter every year, and (as we all know) their kid's clothes are affordable and high quality.

But every once in awhile, I crave a bit of originality. Sometimes I want something for me or my kids, that isn't also owned by every Jack, Ava and Mommy at playgroup (and in nine different colors to boot!). That's where Lilywear by miele fresca comes in. The designers create beautiful pieces, drawing inspiration from vintage fabrics, art history and everyday life. The result of their efforts are silk-screened tees and tote bags that are refreshingly unique. Each piece is hand printed, so every item is one of a kind.

Lilywear has shirts for mom, dad and kids. Check out this adorable Friends shirt for babies and toddlers. Available in sizes 3-6 months to 4T (note, they seem to run a bit small), I love this shirt's happy design and bright colors. And their line of women's tees is chock-full of distinct designs that are that are sure to shake any wardrobe out of that mall-store rut, the Night Plume shirt (pictured above) is just one of these. The shirt's cut is very flattering, and I especially liked the longer length (I have three children, and have no need for my belly button to greet the world).

Shop miele fresca now through May 14 (Happy Mother's Day!!) and receive FREE SHIPPING on all orders $25 and over. The free shipping will be automatically credited to all qualifying orders.

A Tisket A Tasket

For many Easter evokes images of egg rolls, family gatherings and a bunny that brings baskets filled with goodies. But for me it isn’t Easter without chocolate!

So I am treating myself to a little chocolate nirvana this season: Vosges Haute Chocolates. These chocolates inspired the statement, “chocolate is a substitute for…” well you know.

What makes these chocolates so great? Owner/Chocolatier Katrina Marko fuses chocolates with exotic ingredients to create a true chocolate experience. These aren’t your mother’s chocolates—cheap boxes of samplers need not apply. If you’ve ever been to one of their chic boutiques (I once planned a whole trip to SoHo from Baltimore just to check them out), you’ll see that for Vosges, chocolate isn’t just a treat you quickly pop in your mouth, it’s a luxurious way of living. Katrina is definitely my kind of girl!

And these chocolates aren’t just for Easter (okay, so maybe the bunnies are) they are perfect for weddings, hostess gifts, anniversaries, business gifts or simply as an indulgence because you deserve it. And truly, aren’t we all worth it?

Try them and I promise you’ll be going back for more. Indulge and enjoy!

Note: Order by tomorrow in time for Easter

Celebrity baby swag: diaper bags and more

The current People Magazine(April 17, 2006) has a 4-page spread on several products some pregnant celebs are using or planning on using once their baby is born.

Some of the items mentioned include this Wendy Bellisimo pink camo diaper bag, which will be Brooke Shields “dress down” bag – and it’s cute and a great price ($59.99).

Rachel Weisz was given one of these Cristi Conaway cashmere ponchos ($80), which you can find at Suedebox.com (which also has some other cute baby gifts, check them out).

And reportedly, Gwen Stefani is going to be using a Bugaboo Cameleon for her baby.

For more, check out this issue of People for additional pregnancy info on Gweneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie and more.

Word Up

Once upon a time, pre-kids, I lived in a hip urban loft, in a downtown location. On weekends I would leisurely pour over salvage markets, searching for old letters from retired signs. I'd fashion these letters into words. It was cheap art. I thought I was hip.

Fastforward about ten years and wall letters are all the rage. No nursery seems complete without a monogram or moniker on the wall. From Pottery Barn to Posh Tots, letters are big. But what if you want them bigger? Say two feet tall? Most of the sources I had found were only offering letters in only one style, or one size. Nice, but a little boring.

I found myself getting nostalgic for the old salvage places. Until a crafty pal of mine turned me onto www.craftcuts.com. Offering letters in over a hundred fonts, in sizes up to four feet tall, they really give you the opportunity to personalize your words. You can buy your letters ready to finish and paint them or decoupage them to match your decor. Or if you are less crafty, you can purchase the letters pre-finished in your choice of 27 different colors. Oh the possibilities! The letters go up quickly and easily and without damaging your walls, with the use of a spray adhesive that is also sold on the site.

And if you can't think of anything to say - check out their cute wood shapes and kits section. Maybe you are a picture thinker and it was butterflies and flowers you were looking for all along.

Lilly's Kids Towels!

Currently Lillian Vernon's Lilly Kids is featuring some adorable beach/pool towels at some great sale prices! The prices start at $6.98 for these large, high quality towels. I picked up a few for my daughter who will be in camp 4 days a week this summer so I won't have to do laundry every other day! I was impressed with the softness of the plush velour on one side and the super absorbent reverse side. We had one from last summer that held up really well that my daughter loved! They are large enough to keep your child wrapped up in to stay warm after the pool and just the right size to lie on at the beach.

They offer free personalization on their regular priced towels. It's a great way for your child to know which towel is theirs if they'll be in a bunk with kids that have other similar looking towels! These towels also make great gifts for a spring or summer birthday.

Want to have some fun on the beach? Check out this neat Checkers Towel Set! For only $9.98, the set includes a game board towel that comes with 24 pieces and a mesh storage bag.

New Huggies product: Clean Team

Is it just me, or is Huggies advertising this new product line, the "Cleanteam", all over the place? Well, their marketing is working, as I'm planning on buying several items from the line the next time I'm out and can find them. The ads show them with all different letters of the alphabet, and since letters are such a big hit in our house, I'm in search of some of these products.

In doing a quick search, I found it online at Drugstore.com, but with animals. They're also cute - I love the disposable bath mitt idea. (currently on sale too). If anyone sees the "letters" version online, leave a comment here as I think it looks like a cute and useful product to review.

Looking for a cool way to label your child's cups?

I have been looking for an easy and attractive way to label my son's sippy cups for awhile now. While doing my research I stumbled upon the BumpyName Label, a brand-new item that enables you to "orbit" your child's cup, bottle, snack container, flashlight, or other similar type of container.

Sold 3 to a pack, the personalized label is made of a rubber-like (but non-toxic) material that is able to be boiled, thrown in the dishwasher, microwaved, etc. It provides a non-slip grip and also has your child's name in Braille, a nice educational tool or a wonderful labeling tool for those visually impaired.

I like that they are reusable and transferable, and they really stand out... so it is easy for you or your child to know which cup is their when with a group. They are also very affordable... $6.95 for a pack of 3.

Check and see if you child's name is available. If you place an order, please note that Mommies with Style readers receive a complimentary ID Tag for each package purchased. Just email them after you place your order with "Mommies with Style" in the subject line and provide your order number and first and last name in the body of the email.

My baby's happy and my hands are free!

Before I had kids, I never would have considered wearing them. I looked at mamas who slung their babies and thought, "ewww... that's just so unattractive, and unappealing." But I've learned that baby wearing can be both cool and stylish--and so helpful for you and your baby.

So two babies later, I'm learning the ropes of baby-wearing. This week, I finally took the plunge and tried a Kangaroo Carrier from Happypouch. Let me tell you, I'm sold on this one! The fabric is beautiful and the stitching is very strong and firm. With padded straps over the shoulders, and 4 inch wide straps all around, both my baby and I are comfortable and I know he is safe on my body.

It took a little getting used to. The first try, at a park, lasted about 3 minutes because I was too nervous. The second try, at a party, we just couldn't get the hang of it. But yesterday, with the help of a friend, the baby and I were wrapped and ready! I was able to walk while pushing my 2 year-old on his bike. Then, we went to our backyard to play and I actually hit a ball off the tee! I was able to entertain my rambunctious big guy, while my 7 month-old comfortably cuddled in thumb-sucking heaven. Later, I even prepared dinner with the baby on my front.

Why try a Mei-Tai or ABC-style carrier? You can do so much while carrying: walk, entertain a toddler, breastfeed, even cook! Your baby is close to you and is comforted and soothed by the security, and you're able to stimulate the baby, all the while taking care of your endless chores (which include your other kids.)You can wear your kids on your back and your hip, too, using a carrier from Happypouch. I'm still getting used to the front... but those will come, I'm sure!

Be prepared to practice--a lot. Learning to wear a baby isn't easy at first, but you'll thank me after a few tries when you realize how comfortable it is for everyone.

Check out the beautiful fabrics that are offered at Happypouch. They accept custom orders, and also have several premades available. Mention Mommies with Style to receive a 10% refund.

Unique items on Mahar Dry Goods

Here's a site that offers some unique and cool products I had not seen before. Mahar Dry Goods sells items created in the homes and studios of artists and designers.

I'm particularly enamored with the toy section, as everything is sound-free and all items that encourage imagination in your child. For example, how fun is this Breakfast set or the Brown Bag Lunch?

They also offer a cool packaging option -- purchase one of their signature suitcases and this makes a great looking gift.

For Product Junkies in Training ...

There is one adage that proves absolutely true at our house: "monkey see, monkey do." This is at times enlightening and very often frightening. My daughter is a two-and-a-half-year-old, bona fide product junkie. She loves "getting ready" with mommy, and has a supersonic radar that seems to sense the precise moment I take my lip gloss out of my bag ... that girl is all about lip gloss.

Not expecting to share my beauty products with my daughter for at least a decade or so, I was thrilled to find AllyKats. Designed by a mom of three daughters, AllyKats offers a whole line of big-girl products, made just for little girls!
Lightly scented (not at all overpowering), sweetly packaged and made with gentle and natural ingredients, this line is perfect for the girlie girl who wants to be just like mommy.

My favorite is the Lily Grapefruit Super Spritz. It does double duty as a hair detangler and light body splash, and it smells like fruity pebbles!
Other fun picks include the sparkle stick, the lip gloss book and sparkling powder puff. And what about this gift set in a fabulous marabou feather-trimmed purse? Filled with sweet-smelling goodies, it makes a great big sister gift!

Mommies With Style readers can shop with the code MWS through June 30 and receive FREE SHIPPING on any order over $25. Check it out! Your little beauties will be ready to troll the aisles of Sephora before you know it.

The Hiphugger - a must-have baby carrier

I am sling-challenged. Frankly they intimidate the heck out of me. And honestly I just didn't like the looks of most of them - when I think sling, I think of mommies mummy-wrapped in floral prints from hell. And lucky for me, my babies weren't the types who wanted to be held all the time. So I just steered clear.

But then I tried The Hiphugger. Supposedly Angelina Jolie carries Zahara in one all over the world (literally), but I'm still mad at her for breaking up Brad and Jen so that doesn't sway me. But what does is the simplicity of it. You hold your baby on your hip, throw the Hiphugger over your head and position it under your baby's rear. There is one place to adjust the shoulder and once you get that fit right, it's a piece of cake. Intended for babies from about six months (when they can sit without help) to 35 pounds, it provides just the right amount of support without constricting your baby. It is very lightweight and not bulky in the least. The Hiphugger is also double-stiched for safety and machine washable.

Best of all is the look. Mine is the Palmer, a jet-black quilted design. The material is very luxurious and completely stylish. For someone who thinks that slings are kind of dorky (no offense sling lovers), I have to say I feel pretty cool at the park with my Hiphugger. And my husband wouldn't think twice about wearing it.

So congrats to the makers of the Hiphugger - they have converted a former non-believer. Now go get yours in time for the start of the playground season! Mommies With Style readers get $15.00 off the "Leeanne" style with coupon code "MWS".

The cutest socks for babies!

I never knew I would care so much about socks... but the first time I saw Trumpette's Mary Jane socks for girls, I couldn't help but be jealous of my mom friends with girls. I secretly wished they made equally cute socks for infant boys. Well... my wish came true!

Trumpette now makes equally adorable Johnny's sneaker socks for boys. They come in six different colors, with a good mix of baby/infant colors as well as typical "boy" colors.

They are so popular that they can be hard to find, but MissFitz has them in stock for a great price of $20 for a set of 6 pairs (they are $24.50 on the Trumpette site!). If you have a baby boy, are expecting one, or need a great infant gift, pick up a set!

And moms of girls... Trumpette has recently introduced Ballerina socks -- so cute! I also love their Pixie socks for girls too. Check them out!

From Computer Geek to Computer Chic ... 15% off Laptop Skins

A new accessory has stolen my heart! And unlike those Jimmy Choo metallic flats I'm currently coveting (and will never actually buy), it's easy on the wallet, as well as the eyes.

The source of my newfound adoration are these fabulous laptop covers by Skyn. High tech meets haute fashion with high-gloss covers, which not only help protect your laptop surface, they remove cleanly (and believe me, I tested this feature again and again!) and are reusable. There are several styles including the retro floral Eva pattern, which comes in pink, blue and purple (I have the pink one, and my laptop has never looked so cute!), as well as solid pink, blue, purple and green. Those who might want to add a little bling to their hardware will love the monogram cover, which includes a Swarovski Crystal initial.

The covers fit most standard laptops (they come in 12", 14" and 15") and range between $35-$40. Mommies With Style readers will receive 15% off their subtotal from now through Mother's Day (May 14) with the code mommiestyle.

So say so long to boring black computers, and give that laptop a much-needed facelift. After all, doesn't your hard-working computer deserve a little accessorizing too?
