Taking My Whirlpool Duet For a Whirl

Recently I told you about my experience with Lowe’s Appliance Selector Tool, but what I didn’t tell you much about was the appliance it led me too – the Whirlpool Duet Front-Loader Washer and Dryer with steam.

Is it legal to marry an appliance?

This washer/dryer set had more features than I knew what to do with when it arrived, but over the last month, I’ve come to appreciate the variety of options it offers. It doesn’t just wash and dry clothes. It steam-cleans my son’s stinky soccer uniform, soaks my husband’s white shirts, de-allergenates (?) my baby’s sheets and delicately hand-washes my “Hand wash only” wool sweater.

So without further ado, I’d like to introduce you to my new favorite duo.

Meet The Washer.

Big. I have three young boys which means we go through a lot of grass-stained, food-spilled, dirt-caked clothes in a week. This washer has a 4.3 cu. ft. drum which means I can wash a week’s worth of all three of my boys’ clothes IN ONE LOAD. Unfortunately, I still have to fold them all.

Serious choice of cycles. Normal, Bulky, Allergen, Heavy Duty, Whites, Jeans, Quick, Delicate, Hand wash, Rinse/Drain/Spin – whatever you’re washing, there’s a cycle to meet your washing needs. This week I used Normal (my clothes), Bulky (our down comforter), Whites (husband’s dress shirts), Hand wash (wool sweaters) and Allergen (boys’ clothes after stomach flu was going around school).

Personalize your wash. Beyond the cycles, you can adjust the water temperature (5 choices), spin speed (5 choices) and degree of dirtiness (3 levels). Plus you can add on a presoak, OXI dispense, extra rinse, deep clean with steam or EcoBoost. My favorites are the presoak option (an option I thought was lost with a front-loader), EcoBoost and Steam Clean.

No rush. Want to start a load of laundry before you hit the hay or head out for the day? No worries about your damp laundry sitting for hours with Whirlpool’s FanFresh button which periodically tumbles the load and circulates air through the washer which keeps the clothes fresh and ready for the dryer when you are ready.

Energy-efficient. The washer is ENERGY STAR® qualified, but beyond that it meets Tier III requirements from the Consortium for Energy Efficiency, the highest level of water and energy savings.

Meet The Dryer.

Fast! This was the first thing I noticed about the dryer. My last dryer took twice as long as my washer to finish a load. This Whirlpool dries an entire load in about 30 minutes – and that’s on the Medium Heat/Less Dry setting. Impressive!

Personalize your drying. Six cycles to choose from (Delicate, Casual, Normal, Bulky, Jeans, Heavy Duty, Towels) plus two timed settings – Enhanced Touch-up and Quick Refresh which use steam to relax wrinkles and refresh clothes.

My favorite feature. I iron my husband’s dress shirts every other week, but frankly I don’t enjoy it. However I’m also fairly thrifty which means I’d rather iron than pay for dry-cleaning. Fortunately, the Whirpool dryer has a two features to make my life easier – a Wrinkle Shield add-on which periodically tumbles and steams the clothes to prevent wrinkling for up to 120 minutes after the load finishes and the Enhanced Touch-Up cycle which quickly tumbles and steams clothes to de-wrinkle them thereby making my ironing job a bit easier.

LED Drum Light. I have to admit I thought this was a silly feature at first. Until I had to find my yoga pants in the back of the dryer for a 6 AM class at my fitness club. Or my son’s soccer socks right before we have to run out the door. Since the 4.3 cu. ft. drum is so large, it’s nice to have a light to see what the heck is back there.

If you’re in the market for a new washer or dryer, give Whirlpool a visit or check out Lowe’s Appliance Selector Tool to help you find the perfect appliance for your lifestyle, space and budget.

Growums: Vegetable Garden Fun For Your Kids

Each of my boys will be getting a Growums pack in their Easter basket this year.  I think this may be my favorite item in the basket.  My boys love to work with Daddy on the annual vegetable garden we have on the side of our house.  Each year we have a variety of veggies and the boys love helping to cultivate and grow our food.

This year, my kids will each get a Growums Gardening Kit.  These kits for kids include several different kinds of seeds in each kit.  They come in themes – so for example, the Pizza Garden has seeds for Roma Tomatoes, Basil, Oregano and Bell Pepper.

You can follow along with the progress of your seets on the Growums.com site too.  The kids can login and watch videos and read information about their plants at various stages.  Growums cost $9.99 per kit.

Disclosure: I received samples of Growums to facilitate this review.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Tegu Blocks: The Toy I Want to Keep for Myself

While I’ve seen Tegu Blocks around the web for a few years now, I had never seen a set in person.  I thought they were your ordinary set of cool, eco-friendly blocks.

These blocks are cool and they are eco-friendly but they are also magnetic and completely addicting.  I received a sample of the Pocket Pouch Tegu Blocks in the mail and I have not been able to put these little blocks of wood down since.  I had planned on keeping these for my kids but seriously may covet them for myself.  It’s like the squishy ball you have on your desk in the office – just something I can’t help but hold.

Of course I will eventually share with my kids.  Really.  And I know they will love them.

Some other cool things about Tegu Blocks – they are made out of Honduran Wood and they are completely eco-friendly.  They’re a bit pricey to be sure, but this is a timeless toy that will last a lot longer than a passing plastic toy.

You can buy various sets of Tegu Blocks on Amazon.

Natural, Non-Toxic Nail Polish from Piggy Paint

I don’t have girls, but if I did, I can imagine I wouldn’t be to thrilled the idea of putting chemicals on their nails for nail polish.

Piggy Paint is makes all-natural nail polish that’s great for kids – it’s non-toxic and odorless.  This seems like a no brainer to me – especially for young kids who tend to put their hands in their mouths often.

$7.99-$8.99 per bottle of nail polish.  Free shipping on orders over $35 on the PiggyPaint.com site.

Green Your Kitchen With Full Circle

I’m always looking for ways to green my kitchen and Full Circle Home has a number of useful, beautiful and eco-friendly products to help keep you kitchen clean and green this holiday season.

Crystal Clear Glass Cleaner – at our house, the holiday means lots of entertaining which inevitably means lots of dirty glasses to wash. Over the years I’ve broken many a glass trying to shove my hand and sponge into them to scrub out the remnants of last nights wine tasting. But no more. With the Crystal Clear Glass Cleaner, my glass are clean – and in one piece. ($7.99)

Scoop Sponge – heard those statistics about the germs and bacteria that can be harbored in your kitchen sponge? One of the culprits is an always-wet sponge. Full Circle solves this problem with their all natural cellulose Scoop sponge. Notice the arch of the sponge? That helps the sponge to dry faster which means less of the gross stuff growing in your sponge. ($4.49 for 2)

Stick ‘Em Magnetic Kitchen Towel – My husband often justifies leaving the towel on the counter by complaining that it’s “too hard” to hang the towel over oven handle. Problem solved with the innovative Magnetic Kitchen Towel. A built-in magnet helps the towel hang on your fridge, stove or other metal surface. Goodbye wet towel on the counter. I’m stuffing this one in my husband’s stocking.($8.99)

Buy a bunch for an eco-kitchen gift pack or just a few to stuff into stockings. Visit www.fullcirclehome.com to see the entire collection and to purchase.

Young Learner Games Encourage Fun With Words

One of my favorite things about the fall are Sunday afternoons with my family.  We turn on NFL Football and hang out at home organizing, playing family games, watching football and just spending some quality time together.

Yesterday was one of my favorite kinds of these days.  It was a bit rainy on and off, plus the Eagles were playing so we holed away for the day.  In between watching football, we tested out a new game from Young Learners called Eat Your Words.

As my 1st Grader Nate continues to learn to read, I find we’re often challenged with finding fun and engaging ways to get him to read.  Seeing as he loves to play games, finding a game where he has to form words to play makes it fun.

We had a blast playing this game as a family over the weekend and I forsee playing this game a lot in the future.  You can get Eat Your Words at the Creative Toy Shop website along with several other Young Learners educational games. Be sure to check out the Calafant toys as well – made from all-recycled cardboard, these are great kits for encouraging imaginative play.

I received a sample game of Eat Your Words for review purposes.

Natural Mat Organic Crib Sheet and Mattress Protector: An Eco Friendly Choice for Baby!

We’re getting ready for our son’s arrival next month and we’ve decided to go with organic bedding from Natural Mat, for his crib. We chose the Organic Fitted Cotton Percale Crib Sheet ($45 ) – which is unbleached and undyed. The sheet is machine washable and dryable, as well as an ec0-friendly choice for our child.

Because accidents happen, we also chose their Breathable Mattress Protector ($70), which is made from soft organic flannelette. They can be used in cribs or for toddlers during potty training. The mattress protector is made with two layers of soft organic flannelette and sandwiched in the middle is a thin polyurethane membrane, which is child friendly and breathable. It comes with elastic bands on each corner so it can be attached securely to the mattress. Mattress protectors can be machine washed at 140 degrees Fahrenheit to kill all bacteria (bacteria and dust mites are killed at 134.6 oF).

Making Changes to Protect my Children Outdoors: The Grass IS Greener on my side

Writer’s Note:  This post is part of the Healthy Child Blog Carnival, an effort by Healthy Child Healthy World to help inspire a movement to protect children from harmful chemicals. This month’s topic is “Splendor in the Grass: Greener Gardens, Yards and Outdoor Spaces.”

Continuing my on-going quest to make healthier and more natural choices for my family – I’m proud to report that this year’s vegetable and fruit garden in our back yard is thriving and helping to feed us on a weekly basis.

As our garden is treated with nothing other than rain water and the occasional hose spritz when it’s hot outside, it’s safe to say that our veggies are about as chemical-free as we can get them.

We have plenty of tomatoes growing.  Back in April I had reviewed the Topsy Turvy Tomato Planter and we’ve been getting tons of ripe cherry tomatoes off of it daily.  (Picture was taken the day after my kids picked it pretty clean!)

While you can see that it’s growing a bit sideways more than down – the end result is the same, our own home-grown tomatoes great for pasta salads and salads this summer.

Hubby also takes a ton of pride in our side garden, where this year we have a whole slew of vegetables like spinach, lettuce, snow peas and zucchini. As you can see from the photo, the lettuce has taken over but that’s because we just got home from two weeks of beach vacation and haven’t been out to pick anything yet! Obviously everything’s thriving despite the record heat we’ve had here in Philly.

I’ve gotten more involved this summer than I have in the past (honestly, hubby’s the one with the green thumb in our family) and been a great experience for us all.

And spefically for me, it’s been really refreshing to see that with our organic gardening, we can still produce wonderful and fresh foods for our family to eat.

It makes simply selecting organic foods at the grocery store a much easier decision for me as well.  Because what I can’t get from our garden I get at our local grocery store – Wegmans – which not only has an awesome organic produce selection but also has a local organic growers produce section where I can support local farmers who grow their products free of pesticides and other harsh chemicals I would never want my children putting into their bodies.

Safety 1st Nature Next Bio-Plastic Booster Seat

Safety 1st® Nature Next™ Bio-Plastic Booster Seat ($11) is just perfect for my 4 1/2 year old son – who still needs a booster seat. We were using a soft booster seat for him, but it kept falling off the chair (with him) when my son would fidget. This eco-friendly seat now also comes in a bright blue.

Safety 1st® Nature Next™ Bio-Plastic Booster Seat is made from 50% bio-plastic, which is developed from renewable plant resources.

I like it because the the booster seat includes adjustable chair straps and non-slip rubber feet to help keep the seat steady. While it’s not adjustable, it is perfect for children who need a smaller boost to reach the table.

You’ll have to thread the chair straps in the back and bottom of the chair, but it was pretty simple. It also has a 3-point harness, which my 2 1/2 year old can use (when she sits in his seat). Add in a low price and this feeding booster seat is a bargain!   Get it on Amazon for $10.99 with free shipping.

Thank you to Safety 1st for providing a sample for review.

I’m a Parent Ambassador for Healthy Child, Healthy World

I’m really excited to announce my participation with Healthy Child, Healthy World as a Parent Ambassador. I’m in great company along with 18 other bloggers and actress Amy Brenneman (Private Practice, Judging Amy) and I’m thrilled to be a part of this movement.

About: Healthy Child, Healthy World is a non-profit organization devoted to expanding global awareness and understanding about the environmental hazards that are potentially hazardous to children that unfortunately exist in today’s modern world. They aim to increase awareness one parent at a time – so we can make better choices for our children.

To me, it’s about making small, daily changes.  Global change starts with one family, and over the last few years, I’ve been trying to make subtle changes in my family’s living on a daily basis.  The world isn’t what it was when we were once kids.  There are chemicals everywhere and they are harmful to our children.

My hope is that in being a part of this volunteer position, I can not only help to spread the word but help to learn what changes I can make in my own home to make it a safer environment for my children.  Because I’ll be the first to admit that while I’ve made a lot of changes in the last few years (eating more organically, buying all-natural products when I can), I’m still pretty mainstream and I’m looking forward to educating myself and my family towards living a healthier lifestyle.

Some info for you guys.  First off, watch this video.  If it doesn’t move you to want to make a change, then you weren’t paying attention and need to watch again.

A Wake-Up Story from Healthy Child Healthy World on Vimeo.

I could go on and on but we’ll start with this intro post.  In the coming months, I hope to bring you tons of useful information via Healthy Child, Healthy World that will help to educate Mommies with Style readers on ways to have a cleaner and safer home.

24 Weeks Pregnant: The Ultimate Organic Crib Sheet by Summer Infant

Image and video hosting by TinyPicOne of my favorite products/go-to baby gifts is the Ultimate Crib Sheet by Summer Infant - and I’m so excited that now there’s a 100% Organic cotton version of the Ultimate Crib Sheet (price range $20 -$22). Now with baby #3 on the way, I”m so excited to use the organic version. The Ultimate Crib Sheet is 4 products in one: A quick change sheet (it attaches via 10 elastic straps to your child’s crib rails), a mattress pad, super absorbent pad and waterproof pad. Nothing soaks through this sheet — we own a few of these Ultimate Crib Sheets and rotate them constantly in my 2 year old’s daughter’s crib.

When your baby wets his/her crib or vomits, the Ultimate Crib Sheet is so easy to change. Especially at 3 AM, when you are exhausted! To take off,  just unsnap the 10 elastic straps — which are snugly attached to the crib slats.  If you use bumpers, the Ultimate Crib Sheet is attached right below them. Dimensions of the Ultimate Crib Sheet are 28″ x 52″.

One Less Laundry Step & Giveaway!

Everyone has their least favorite chore and I have to say that laundry is one of mine.  I think it’s that “doing the laundry” involves collecting dirty clothes, sorting them, perhaps pretreating stains, washing them, drying them, folding them and sometimes ironing them.  And this is just for ONE LOAD. Depending on the size of your family, this process needs to be repeated multiple times a week…or a day. So anything that makes laundry easier, I want to know about.

I recently had the chance to try out the Robby Wash Ball by Oransi.  The palm-sized ball is filled with high-efficiency, hypoallergenic, eco-friendly mini balls of detergent. You throw the whole ball in your washer one day and take it out a YEAR LATER with no more detergent ever to add since each ball lasts up to 12 months and replaces about 75 pounds of traditional laundry detergent. I’ve been using the Robby Wash Ball for the last month and have been thrilled with it. Why?

Saves time. True, adding detergent to the washing machine takes only seconds. But multiply those seconds times the number of loads per week and heck, you almost save enough time to sit and enjoy a cup of tea in peace and quiet [Disclaimer: The Robby Wash Ball does not guarantee peace and quiet to drink your tea....but hey, it might happen!]

Saves money. One Robby Wash Ball costs $32.95 and last for 12 months. Whatever kind of detergent you use now, you likely spend 2-4 times this in a year on detergent.

Saves space. Springtime inspires us to declutter and there’s nothing attractive about a big ole bottle of laundry detergent sitting around. The Robby Wash Ball is small and discrete and most of the time will just stay in your washer.

Saves trash. No boxes or bottles of detergent. For a whole year.  Plus you can buy refills for the Robby so that you could  go years without buying another jug of laundry soap.

Saves your skin. The Robby Wash Ball contains safe, hypoallergenic laundry detergent that has been tested safe for use with infant laundry. Plus it doesn’t contain phosphates or chlorine, meeting the strict environmental compliance requirements of Europe (more stringent than U.S.).

The Robby Wash Ball is available in two formulas – the Blue Robby Wash Ball can be used in either cold or hot water with colors or whites while the Fuchsia Robby Ball is formulated specifically for cool water temperatures and colored laundry items.  Each balls also comes with stain stick and refills are available so that you can keep using your Robby for years to come.

Popular in Europe for years, the Robby Wash has just become available in the U.S. at Oransi’s website or on Amazon. But just for one lucky Mommies With Style reader––your very own Robby Wash Ball! To enter, leave a comment with your least favorite part of laundry duty. Stain removal? Folding? Ironing? Finding that ever-missing sock match??  Tell us and you could win a Blue Robby Wash Ball to at least make one part of each laundry load a little bit easier.

Contest ends Monday, April 26th at midnight PST.
