The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has been putting more warnings out there about the dangers of furniture and TV’s tipping, and harming your child. With TV’s now being so slim and light, and furniture being a little less sturdy, you’d be amazed at how easy it is for your child to pull them down on top of themselves. If your child is now walking and/or pulling themselves up than you need to do anything in your power to protect them from the dangers in your home. A new data report (pdf) shows that between 2000 and 2010, CPSC staff received reports of 245 tip-over-related deaths involving children 8 years old and younger. More than 90 percent of the incidents involved children 5 years old and younger. In more than half of the 245 fatalities (56%), the child was crushed by the weight of the television, furniture, or appliance. The majority of these children suffered fatal injuries to the head (67%).

In addition, more than 22,000 children 8 years old and younger are treated in hospital emergency rooms every year (2008-2010) for injuries related to instability or tipover of televisions, furniture, and appliances. And like the fatalities, a majority of these injuries (56%) are to the head.

A major question moms may ask themselves is how do I know what is dangerous? In order to get a clear view on what your baby might find the most interesting.  You will be amazed at what catches your attention at your baby level. Keep a list of dangerous areas, and then search for items that could remedy that danger, or at least make it a little safer. Here are a few to start with.

Electrical Sockets:  Cover them all with KidCo Outlet Caps, or better yet, replace them with the Universal Outlet Cover.Its spring loaded cover automatically covers outlet and prevents injury from inserting objects into the outlet. Furniture: When babies use furniture to pull themselves up, they can pull things over. Remove wobbly tables that could tip over and fasten bookcases to the wall. I downloaded the Theraflu WheresFlu iPhone mobile app(also available for other phones like the BlackBerry and Droid) and immediately did a check based on my zip code.  According to WheresFlu, Erie, PA is apparently on high alert for the flu, which isn’t fun for me to see as that’s in-state (although still several hours away from where I live in the Philly burbs.)  High means that over 15% off the population is affected with the flu.  That’s a big amount of people!

My town is on “moderate” alert (5% of the population being affected) which actually doesn’t surprise me given the time of year and the amount of kids we’ve been noticing out sick at school lately.
