Fashion Friday: Stylish & Functional Workout Gear

I’ve been pretty much living at the gym lately.  (Not that it’s doing me any good.  Yet.)  Because of that, I’m needing like 5-6 different workout outfits a week and I had a lot less “cute” workout gear than I thought I did.

So I’m in the market for some new workout gear.  Here’s a few pieces I’ve been coveting online:

Flattering cut on this Horizon Tank on Athleta ($59)

Nice kelly green color on this Under Armour Women’s Get it Started Sleeveless Tee ($29.99 at Dick’s Sporting Goods)

I have had the Lucy Hatha Power Pants for a couple of years now and they’ve held up really well.  Now I have the Lucy Hatha Power Capris ($79) in my cart and it’s only a matter of time before I buy ‘em!  The price is steep but the clothes from Lucy are very high quality and made to last.  No coupon codes that I can find right now but keep an eye out for them online because they do come out with 20% off ones from time to time.

prAna Quinn Top, normally $48, on sale for $28.80 (in fact, prAna is having a big 40% off sale from January 18-25 so check it out!)

Lulumon Deep Breath Tank ($58)

Athleta Burnout Headband ($14)

Fashion Friday: Football Chic

A couple of years ago, I started doing Fantasy Football with my husband and some good friends.  Already an Eagles fan, being a part of a Fantasy League has only served to make football something even more exciting for our family each fall.  There’s just something to be said for an afternoon on the couch screaming at the tv, eating fattening food, drinking some beer and letting the kids run around with their friends on Sunday afternoons.

So this week, I’m going Football Chic.  Most Sundays in the fall consist of a Philadelphia Eagles jersey and jeans but I often find cute Eagles tees at local stores.  So without further ado (and I apologize in advance for the Philly-heavy features), scream, shot and still look cute with these ideas for Football Chic:

Love the cut of this Women’s Football Short Sleeve Shirt from Reebok – available at Dick’s for $34.99.

I do really love the pink jersey.  It’s girly and it’s great for October, which has now become known as the month to wear pink to show your support of breast cancer awareness.  I have two pink Eagles tees that I bought last year just for that reason and one of these days I’ll cave and get myself a Pink Philadelphia Eagles Jersey like this one from Sports Authority for $64.99.

How completely awesome is this Eagles “Kicker” Maternity Shirt for the pregnant Mom?  It comes with a matching onesie and bib for after the baby comes!  Also from Reebok, the Women’s Kicker Maternity T-Shirt and Onesie is available on Amazon for $44.99. (They of course have other teams than the Eagles so search on yours!)

So Alyssa Milano now has her own line of NFL gear – who knew?  Here she is sporting the Touch by Alyssa Milano New England Patriots Burnout Thermal Long Sleeve T.  Get it on the Nflshop.com for $39.99.  They have all the major teams so pick yours!

And I literally spoke outloud, “Shut the Hell Up” when I spotted this one.  You can Customize your own Jeans with your football teams logos on the back pocket of these jeans!  Women’s Custom NFL Jeans – $74.99 on NFLShop.com.

For $22.99 this Seattle Seahawks Heart Charm Bracelet ($22.99 at FansEdge.com) makes a great gift and is a fun way for a girly football fan to bling it up on Sundays!

Get Your Family Groove on with Dance Dance Revolution (Wii)

While I may scream if we have one more snow day this year, this winter we’ve discovered a new family game thanks to all of the snow days.  Dance Dance Revolution by Konami may not be a new game, but it’s new to us and there is a new Wii release for it.

This game has been around for 11 years but this latest release (November 2010) adds a Choreograph Style to the game.  In addition to having to follow the moves with your feet on the floor mat, the player uses the nunchuck and Wii remote to follow along with the arm movements as well!

It seems like a ton of fun but we’re playing using Classic Style – which is the floor mat only.  I figure once my coordination graduates to a level where I can actually get the footwork down, I’ll add the arm movements.  In the meantime, using just the floor mat is a workout!  I’ve been setting the game to Workout Mode on the days I can’t get to the gym and the kids join me and we’ve been spending hours playing the game.  While you can only have one player on the mat at a time, I often let the kids on the mat and I mimick the moves on the side to practice and workout.

You can also use the Wii Fit board with this latest release.  Check it out.  If you aren’t familiar, think of it as Guitar Hero for the Feet.  At least that’s how I’ve been explaining it to friends.  Get Dance Dance Revolution for the Wii for 68.99 on Amazon with free shipping.

Workout Options You Don’t Have to Leave Your House For

No more excuses.  This time of year, millions of women are hitting the gym and picking back up on an old or a new fitness regime to work off all that extra pumpkin pie and egg nog they indulged in last month.

Personally I’ve been talking about getting back on my fitness and diet from last summer and so far so good.  The biggest challenge I find this time of year is the motivation – or lack thereof – when the cold weather hits.  When there’s snow and cold outside, I want to just curl up inside of my house on the couch with a big cup of coffee and plate of carbs.

And I have a wonderful local gym I work out at – but I like that I don’t have any excuses not to work out at home.  Between the Wii and workout videos, there’s really no reason I can’t burn some calories at home too.

I recently received a box of new workout DVDs that I thought looked pretty good – if you don’t have a Wii or are looking for a new video, here are some ones to check out:

Jane Fonda Prime Time – Fit & Strong – $8.99 (down from $14.98) on Amazon with free shipping.  I love that Jane Fonda is still putting out workout videos.  I used to workout to her Step Aerobics all the time in college and she definitely still has it.  I hope to be this fit at her age.  Fit & Strong includes two 25-minute basic workouts that include a little of everything – strength training, burning fat, etc.  This DVD is brand new – it released November 30th. She also released Jane Fonda Prime Time – Walk Out, which is a walking workout for folks who like to walk to stay in shape.

Jillian Michaels  has released two new workout DVDs – Six Week Six Pack ($8.99 on Amazon) and Shred-It With Weights ($7.99)  She’s hard-core as always but she gets results when you stick with her!  I have to admit, I wasn’t on the Jillian plan until I met her in 2009.

She was so genuine and nice, it only inspired me more to workout with her as you know she’s pushing for results as she truly wants everyone to succeed in their fitness goals.

And while we’re talking Jillian, it only makes sense to transition into the new Biggest Loser workout DVDs – Biggest Loser: Power Walk ($8.99) and Biggest Loser: Cardio Max Weight Loss ($8.99).  If you’re a fan of the show, these are two DVDs worth checking out to kick it into high gear with your New Years Resolutions.

No Excuses, My 2011 Resolutions Start Today: Random Fitness Related Thoughts

Starting today I’m back on MyFitnessPal.com – tracking my calorie intake and exercise routine – which I’ve been telling everyone about.  It feels good to log back on – like sitting back down with an old friend who makes me feel good about myself.

I spent the last few days at the beach with some of my best friends in the world.  It was a great trip for the adults and the kids but now that it’s back to reality I’m looking back to getting back to the grind and not having any more reasons to drink that extra glass of wine or finish eating the plate of Christmas cookies.

I’m excited to get back to the gym.  While I ran a bit over the holidays, Baby, it’s cold out there!  I’ll be content to get back to my little routine of running around the indoor track.

Sidenote because I’m a product reviewer and have to mention it – my one downer to going back inside to run is that I won’t be able to track my outdoor runs with Nike+GPS. I’ve been loving this iPhone app which chimes in every mile to tell you what mile you’ve reached and how far you’ve run.  When you finish, you can peek at the map to see your running route. (It still works indoors, just doesn’t track your runs indoors as who needs to see that?)  Have to say from experiences running outdoors the last few days though – snow drifts can really crimp a girl’s running pace!

While I’m calling it a New Years Resolution, I really do think Resolutions are a crock.  I mean really it should be about a lifestyle change and I feel pretty happy that I made a big change in 2010 dieting and exercising… I just fell a little off over the holidays so while I call this a Resolution, I’m telling myself it’s just getting back to healthy habits.

And when all else fails, I had to share these last photos.  Last week, I played WiiFit again for the first time in over a year.  It’s a lot of fun!  And you really can burn some series calories if you put the time into it.  Here I am doing some ski jumping.  I think my photos are pretty funny but I caught some great ones of my friends in funny poses too.

They’d pretty much never speak to me again if I posted them so I won’t but this was so much fun and my quads were a little sore the next day!  Hubby and I both promised each other than if we slack on our workout regime or the weather gets crappy that we should at least break out the WiiFit board and do some of this over the winter again – a little workout is better than no workout!

New Years Resolutions Start With My Favorite Diet & Fitness Site: MyFitnessPal.com

Last spring, I had finally had it.  I was still up several pounds from my pre-pregnancy weight and the kicker?  My son was 3 1/2.  Deciding that it wasn’t just going to “come off” easily after three and a half years, I joined MyFitnessPal.com at the encouragement of my little sister.

From May to September, I lost 15 pounds.  I was probably strict about the diet and my exercise regime fairly devoutly for 14 weeks or so.  It wasn’t a quick weight loss.  I counted calories, I hit the gym several times a week and I didn’t sweat the random weekend days that I may have gone over or didn’t do as well as I did the day before.  I lost about a pound of week.  I stuck with it because I found the website and program to be extremely easy and fun to use.

You can see my review from August of 2010 when I was down 10 pounds.

Now here I am at the end of December and while I have to be honest and admit that I haven’t been eating the healthiest, and I’m certainly not working out like I did, I’m happy to report that I’ve maintained my weight from the end of my time on MyFitnessPal.  Well, mostly.  In the end, by September I had lost 15 pounds.  I’ve gained 3 since then which I can attribute to Peppermint Bark and Christmas cookies.  But it even feels like more than two pounds as I’m bloated and have had about as much exercise as a sack of potatoes over the last few days.

So along with millions of other people, I’ll be starting back up on a diet and health regime in the New Year.  I plan on joining back on board with my account at MyFitnessPal.com.  It’s just too easy not to – the straight calorie counting, the ability to input my food and exercise into my profile via the web or my iPhone – it’s simple and it works.  I implore anyone who is going for a diet and fitness resolution this year to check out this site.  It’s user-friendly, simple and best of all – free!

If you know me, friend me!  The best part of the site is that it’s Facebook-esque if you want it to be.  My parents, sister and aunt all dieted with me last summer and having the group together to post encouragement on each others walls was an inspiration.

Check out MyFitnessPal.com and let me know what you think!  I wasn’t paid or asked to write this review, I just love the website and think it’s a fabulous fitness and diet tool and what’s better than free?

Skechers Shape-Ups – Do They Work?

Image and video hosting by TinyPicI’m sure you’ve heard about Skechers Shape-Ups ($110 for the Breast Cancer Awareness Version). But what are they really like and do they work? In a nutshell, they ROCK!!

I recently received a pair to test out and I’ll admit, I was a bit intimidated by them. I was going out to the store, sans kids, and I figured I’d take them for a test run. They felt so odd that I quickly took them off, I wasn’t sure I should go to a supermarket with shoes that felt that different (Skechers describes the experience like walking in sand). A few days later, my friend Esti of primetimeparenting.com came over wearing hers and I related my experience. She laughed and said, “They’re great, try them again”. So, I pulled them out again. I walked around my apartment as our children played together and I loved the shoes! Esti and I agreed that they were like walking on a cloud – Skechers describes them like walking on sand.

Then came phase two: taking them to the streets. I decided to put them on to go get my lunch, taking the baby in his stroller. After a walk around the corner, I felt my calves working — like I had just done a long walk. Skechers recommends limiting daily sessions with the Shape-Ups to 25-45 minutes for the first 2 weeks, increasing you time in 5 – 10 minute increments. Walking in Shape-Ups to get stronger leg, rear end, back and ab muscles? Yeah, I’m into that!

Thank you to Skechers for sending a product sample.

BluePrint Cleanse: Initial Thoughts as I’m into Day Two of my Juice Cleanse

Stocking 3 days of the BluePrint Cleanse in my fridge. Have to admit, seeing all 18 bottles lined up was a bit daunting.

Had I prepared a little better, I would have ordered The 3-Day Cleanse Book before this week.  The Book, which talks about the merits and how-tos of the Cleanse is authored by the co-founders of the BluePrint Cleanse that I was about to embark on.

It arrived from Amazon the night before I started so I only had a brief time to skim it and read how I should have been prepping ahead of time for my 3-day Cleanse.  I like to be prepared but I was most definitely not this time.  (The tasty margarita I had the night before I started was most definitely not on the recommended pre-Cleanse list.)

I figured it was okay though – I opted for the Renovation Cleanse, which is like the Beginner juice only cleanse for BluePrint Cleanse. 6 juices each day for three days.

Fed Ex dropped the package at my doorstep at 9:20 on Day 1.  However, I wasn’t home and didn’t start my first drink until I got home at 11.

The 1st and 3rd drink is the Green Juice. I didn’t mind it but it certainly wouldn’t be my drink of choice at any time – especially early in the morning.  It’s heavy on the veggies but the veggies are good ones (spinach, kelp) and there’s even a hint of Lemon and Apple in the juice.  I got through it.

The 2nd is great – a Pineapple/Apple/Mint Juice.  Loved it.  If it weren’t so pricey, I’d order more of this to just have in the house on a regular basis.

Drink 4 is the Spicy Lemonade.  I have to admit that I only drank part of it.  It has Cayenne Pepper in it and as someone with a sensitive stomach, I was worried about it.

Drink 5 is the Beet Juice.  Bleh.  I’m not a big fans of beets but I can tolerate them.  (Some reviews had people gagging at the smell.)  I was fine with it and got it down.

Drink 6  is the Cashew Nut Milk.  Yum!  Love this drink, it was like a tasty dessert before I went to bed.

Hardest parts thus far:

  • being a Mom and preparing all the foods for my kids.  I have to remind myself not to take a bite as I’m doing it.
  • Drinking this amount of liquids. I don’t drink as much water as I should normally, so I feel like I’m constantly trying to ingest liquids while doing this.
  • I miss my coffee.

But otherwise, it’s going well. I’m not really hungry and feel great so far.

Check out my first post:  Stay Tuned:  Tomorrow I’m starting the all-juice BluePrint Cleanse

Stay Tuned: Tomorrow I’m starting the all-juice BluePrintCleanse

A couple of weeks ago, I was out to lunch with my good friend Colleen from Classy Mommy.  We were talking about our eating habits and she mentioned that she’s been considering doing one of those juice cleanses.  She had me at cleanse.  I’ve been wanting to do one myself for awhile – just out of sheer curiosity and a need to be healthier and get rid of some of the nasty toxins in my body for a few days.

After chatting, we settled on the BluePrintCleanse.  It’s pricey but after reading the reviews, it seemed legit and like the kind of thing I was looking for.  Plus, it’s no maintenance on my part – I make nothing.

I’ll be doing the 3-day Cleanse and all of my juices should arrive via overnight FedEx tomorrow morning.  I’m excited and nervous.  Probably a little more nervous since it’s tomorrow and I’m having that “holy crap, what did I get myself into feeling.”  But it’ll be worth it.  And I’m not one of those die-hards who will feel horribly sick doing this.  If I feel sick, I’ll stop.  Or I’ll “cheat” with one of their “allowed” foods like cucumbers or avocados.

You guys will probably get sick of hearing me talk about it but I’ll post updates on how it’s going.  Ever since I decided to do this, it’s been a big topic of conversation.  Everyone seems very curious and everyone apparently thinks about doing one at one time or another.

I’ll be doing the Renovation Cleanse.  While I’m no cheeseburger eater (I think I’m actually moderately healthy in my food choices compared to the average American), I read this was considered the “beginner” stage and thought I’d start here.

I predict I’ll be whining for my coffee by 10 am.  Stay tuned.

10 lbs down with MyFitnessPal.com

This is one of those reviews I’m writing out of profound thanks and love.  No one pitched me about this website or product.  No PR folks cold called my cell to tell me I have to sign up.  This is a, “I’ve used this service and it’s awesome and I have to tell you about it” post.

So it was my sister and family who tuned me into MyFitnessPal.com, which is shocking in and of itself as I’m the social media one in the fam who had never heard of this website.  Nevertheless, my sister and parents convinced me to join the “family diet” but joining what we’ve dubbed the Facebook of dieting – MyFitnessPal.com, a totally free calorie counting, diet & exercise journal.

Last May, I got sick of feeling like I wanted to lose a little weight but doing nothing about it.  I joined this site with my family.  I’ve been very healthy and reasonable about it but I’m proud to report that I’m officially 10 pounds less than when I started in May!  It’s been slow and steady and it’s involved a lot of calorie counting and getting into a work out regime.

You create a profile, input your weight, height and how fast you’d like to lose.  MyFitnessPal.com will give you a daily calorie goal.  You’ll gain extra calories to eat the days you work out.  And there’s a whole community aspect (boards) where you can find other users for support if you’d like.

I’ve really enjoyed the interface – it’s simple to use.  I do it online but when I’m in a pitch, I use the iPhone app to login (also free).  Check it out – whether you have 5 lbs or more to lose, it’s a great tool.

Jennifer Hudson is the New Spokesperson for Weight Watchers

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

It was announced Thursday at a press conference in New York City that Grammy and Oscar Winner, Jennifer Hudson is the new spokesperson for Weight Watchers, kicking off a national advertising campaign. She’s been following Weight Watchers for several months and looked amazing. Hudson explained, “Weight Watchers is the healthy, natural choice for me because it teaches me how to live a healthier lifestyle and it makes sense for my life. I can follow the plan no matter where I am, still enjoy my favorite foods and even use the iPhone app to track my points.”

After the birth of her son seven months ago, she was inspired to adopt a healthier lifestyle to be a better role model. She tried several different diets that left her feeling deprived and then discovered Weight Watchers.

I attended this press conference and was so impressed by Jennifer’s new look and wonderful attitude. As a blogger who’s done two campaigns for Weight Watchers (and been a longtime member), I agree with her — it really works! Jennifer will be sharing her favorite foods, exercise tips and more at WeightWatchers.com.

Disney Family.com Adds Self Section

Disney Family.com (formerly family.com) has added recently added a Self Section.  I recently attended the launch of this new section, which features beauty, diet & fitness, and relationships. It struck a chord with me, because with 2 children and a third one on the way, I don’t do much for myself anymore, beyond semi-regular haircuts. I haven’t gone clothes shopping in a while and I haven’t bought any new makeup (except my favorite lipstick, Paula Dorf’s Spunky, and my beloved Mac Studio Fix Powder) in years.  I’ll be going back to work in the fall and I’m going to need some help getting stylish!
