Baby Carriers: Lightening the load with Baby K’tan, BabyHawk, Evenflo Snugli & Lillebaby

Little is almost 1 year old. I know. I can’t believe it.

In the past year, I’ve been busy learning how to chase a 6-year-old and a 4-year-old without dropping my baby. The secret? Baby carriers.

Now, I know all about the concerns with the CPSC over “wearing” your baby. Those concerns are very just and real. It goes without saying that one should carefully read baby carrier instructions prior to wearing. And practice, practice, practice: sitting down, standing on a very soft surface, wearing baby with another responsible adult in arms reach… all before you wear your baby out in the real world. Its also extremely important to recognize that wearing a baby does not equal paying attention to your baby. When you are wearing your baby, he is attached to you, yes. But it is your responsibility to consistently check on the baby’s well-being while you are wearing him or her. Make sure she can breathe. Make sure you can see her. And by all means, make sure she is secure.

Some top (and some favorite) baby carriers from Little’s first year:

Baby K’tan: with at least 9 ways to wrap your baby on you, this carrier was the one I used, consistently, in Disney World. It was so easy to move her from upright and looking at the World, to snuggled in to sleep, to breastfeeding during a show. It only took a few practices to confidently learn about 5 ways to hold her. I love the versatility of the Baby K’tan. And don’t let the 3-loops intimidate you (they’re very intimidating!) Watch the simple instructions and follow the well-described images to learn how to hold your baby properly. Twin bonus: you can hold your twins with this carrier!

BabyHawk: This was reviewed last summer as I anticipated using the BabyHawk Carrier. In nearly 7(!) years of parenting, its the most well constructed, supportive, comfortable Mei Tai I have received and used (and, believe me, I’ve tried a lot.) Love the variety of patterns available. But what really scores the most points here is the comfort when you wear your baby in a BabyHawk. Its also made to hold toddlers on your back, so I’m confident I’ll be using this one for a long time coming.

Evenflo Snugli Hug: This soft carrier has greater availability as you can pick it up at a Walmart store or purchase online, and the under $30 price point is worth mentioning. The Snugli Hug‘s Secure-lock buckles keep baby inside and offer a sense of security for parents uneasy about simply wrapping their child in cloth. It also has easy-adjustable straps to situate baby in the right spot. Baby can be carried in two ways: facing in or out (though babies should not face out until they can hold their heads up.) Unfortunately, the body on this carrier is a bit long if you have a small torso. Like many standard size carriers, it was too long for me. But works just fine for those with average and longer torsos.

LilleBaby EveryWear Sport: What I really liked about this carrier was how light-weight and versatile the carrier is, as well as the potential for longterm wears–both within one day (its very easy to wear your baby in this carrier) and over time–children can be worn through toddlerhood and preschool, if your child will let you! With 5 carrying positions, baby and parent can adjust to what baby likes best as baby grows. And the LilleBaby EveryWear Sport has a pocket in the front–idea for walks and strolls when you don’t want to carry a lot. I found this carrier to be a bit difficult to get used to and to get my child into, however the video instructions on their site guide you through wearing your baby correctly so that you feel secure. (If you plan to use this carrier with a baby, you will need to buy the infant cradle, sold separately.)

Newborn Neccessities: Bounce Baby Bounce

As I mentioned in my previous post, Baby Gianna loves to move – whether we’re bouncing, walking or swinging, she loves the motion. That along with my trouble putting her down (she’s my first and she’s just so darn cute!) made it difficult to get her used to all the swings, seats and other contraptions we received from baby showers and hand-me-downs. As I learned how to put her down I also began to learn that she was very opinionated about where she was put down. Some of the products taking up space in my house only worked for a few weeks and sadly some of them never worked for Gianna at all. One of the things that she has always liked is the Baby Bjorn Babysitter Balance. As she gets bigger she enjoys it more and more. That’s why the Babysitter Balance is #5 on my list of Newborn Neccessities.

The Baby Bjorn Babysitter Balance is a bouncy seat that has offered me a sleek and efficient place to put Gianna while I take a shower, do the dishes, or shoot off a few quick emails.  The seat has three positions: sleep, rest and play.  We’ve always used the “play” position.  As she’s gotten older and more active she has learned to enjoy the bouncy nature of the seat and just loves to make it move on her own.  I’ve also quickly learned that she now knows how to scoot herself out of the seat, so we’re sure to strap her in with the reversible fabric strap.  It’s so easy to fold to take with us that it goes just about everywhere.

The Babysitter Balance is available in a variety of colors and even comes in an organic version, though all of them have washable fabric that’s guaranteed free from hazardous substances.  The retail price starts at about $120 and can be purchased at most large baby retailers including Diapers.com.

A sample of this product was provided for review on Mommies With Style.

Newborn Necessities: Sassy toys for a sassy baby

In my top ten list of newborn necessities, Sassy baby toys takes #2.

I was given several Sassy toys for my baby shower, and I have to admit that I wasn’t super excited by them.  They didn’t look like anything a baby would be very interested in.  Boy was I wrong!  I started using Sassy’s baby ring rattle with Gianna when she was about a month old.  At that point she really wasn’t interested in any of her toys but after trying every newborn-appropriate toy in my basket, I decided to give the ring rattle a shot.

She was fascinated!  I’m not sure if it was the bold, black and white stripes or the noise of the smaller green rings clacking together or a combination of the two.  Whatever it was that got her attention, she watched that ring rattle for 20 minutes.  So for the first 3 months of her life, that Sassy toy was our go-to attention grabber.  She’d lay on my lap for a half hour at a time just staring at it.  Making faces and silly noises at a baby is fun to a point, but 30 minutes of it can be exhausting.  The ring rattle saved me from all of that!  I loved it so much that I’ve bought two of them for friends with babies on the way.

Sassy designs toys with the advice of child development experts, ensuring that all of their products are not only fun but that they also help children developmentally. Their toys are of the highest quality with no unsafe plastics or paints used.

I have several other Sassy toys for older babies and I can’t wait until Gianna is old enough to play with them. I’m sure she’ll love them just as much.

Sassy toys can be purchased at Babies ‘R Us, Amazon.com and other large retailers. The best part is that most of their toys only cost a few dollars!

Baby Laundry Detergent from Earth’s Best: Great for Sensitive Skin & Eco-Friendly

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Even though my daughter is now 2 years old, we still use baby detergent for her, because her skin is so sensitive. We’ve loving the sample Earth’s Best sent of their new Baby Laundry Detergent. Formulated for delicate baby skin and 70% organic, it’s hypoallergenic,  contains 99% bio-based ingredients, and is made with plants and mineral sources (it does not contain animal by-products).

Free of petrochemicals and chlorine free, it’s not tested on animals. There are no artificial colors and it’s HE  (High Efficiency Washing Machines) compliant. The detergent comes in 2 sizes; The 50 oz size ($11.99) is a 2x concentrate and will do 32 loads and the 100 oz size ($19.99) is also a 2x concentrate and does 64 loads. And it’s from Earth’s Best, which is a name I have trusted since my son (who’s now 4) was an infant.

I was pleased with that this detergent worked well with my young child’s sensitive skin and that it’s an eco-friendly choice for a laundry detergent.

You can find the detergent at Babies R Us /Toys R Us.

Sweet Dreams with Aden & Anais

Remember Linus and his blankie? We love him. We love that he needed a security blanket the way Middle needs his thumb. While none of the kids has attached to a blankie, they do love to pull them up and cuddle.

One such great cuddling blanket is the Classic Dream Blanket by Aden & Anais. Its so-soft fabric is made of a natural, gentle muslin, making it breathable, flexible and very comfortable.

A great baby gift, the dream blanket is available in colorful bright prints. It uses 4 layers of the light muslin fabric, making it plush enough for a true cuddle.

Thanks to Aden & Anais for providing a sample for this review.

ToyFair 2010: Disney Online’s World of Cars Preview

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

At February’s Toy Fair, Disney Online previewed their fabulous World of Cars Online website — free-to-play browser-based, virtual world based on Disney/Pixar’s “Cars”. Since that is my four year old’s favorite movie, he is going to love the features — which are designing your own car, making new friends and playing mini-games. The premise is that Lightning McQueen and his friends are helping new race cars train in Radiator Springs, which is growing due to new businesses opening.

Kids Can:
• Create Their Own Race Car – Pick the body style, color, name and more to make it totally their own. This was cool and kids are going to really enjoy being creative.
• Explore the Road – Drive beyond Radiator Springs to explore Carburetor County. Enjoy backroads racing and adventures with Mater and others!
• Community –  Kids can see when their friends are online and interact with them to create a Cars Community.
• Race and Play –Cars can warm up the road on a variety of tracks to win badges and trophies. They can also play mini-games like Lightning Storm and Ramone’s Paint Blast to earn coins and more!

If you want to upgrade from Free-to-Play to Subscription, you’ll get access to:

o Paint jobs, gear and accessory purchases to customize your Car and home
o A Pro Racing Career and access to exclusive Piston Cup race tracks
o Special Events and Adventures

Bottom Line: Kids are going to really like the World of Cars Online. It offers children a chance to be creative with making their own cars and have adventures driving around Radiator Springs. Best of all, it’s mostly free (if you want to change your car more than once, you’ll have to get a subscription). Parents create an account, and then create sub-accounts for their children. They can monitor their child’s progress on the site.

The site will officially launch later this year – but it’s in Beta now, so take a look!

Haiti: Hands & Feet Update

1799189856_508540141bA few weeks ago I posted about an organization I work with called the Hands & Feet Project, a Haitian orphanage that was cut off from supply routes during the earthquake. Due to the amazing efforts of a few dedicated people, within a few days of the earthquake, what started off as one private plane from Santa Barbara, CA willing to fly supplies directly into the town of Jacmel turned into 10 planes which now has reached nearly 100 planes which have flown in much-needed food, supplies and medical necessities to the Jacmel orphans and people in surrounding villages.

In addition, I wanted to give a HUGE THANKS to a handful of industry companies have stepped up and joined with Hands & Feet Project to donate their time, goods and services.

eureka

aden

Green to Grow donated more than $30,000 worth of BPA-free bottles and nipples to the orphanage which included the laborious task of de-packaging over 12,000 products in order to more efficiently send them to Haiti. phil&teds jumped in and donated a handful of travellers, their lightweight, travel cots for the many families in Jacmel who lost their homes as well as a Dash stroller and bassinet for a silent auction we held. aden + anais generously donated dozens of their cotton muslin swaddle blankets and Eureka sent over a collection of tents.

Thanks again to all the individuals and companies who have donated their time and money to the relief efforts in Haiti.

You can learn more about the Hands & Feet Project, get involved or sponsor one of the growing number of orphans at www.handsandfeetproject.org.

Help Haitian Orphans With The Hands & Feet Project

hf1Hi, Kate here. For the last two years I’ve been involved with an orphanage in Haiti called the Hands & Feet Children’s Village. Two years ago, the orphanage was ravaged by 4 successive hurricanes that hit Haiti which flooded their buildings and buried their property in 5 feet of rock and debris from flood waters. Fortunately no lives were lost at the orphanage. They were able to clean up, rebuild and construct a retaining wall around the property to prevent future flood damage.

But now the earthquake.

Again, amazingly, all the orphans were safe and their buildings stayed standing, but the town of Jacmel where they are located was decimated. There is extensive loss of life and destruction in the town. Although the orphanage has enough supplies to last for 3-4 weeks, they are being inundated with newly orphaned children and the remainder of the town which is without food, water and medical services. The roads leading to the town have been badly destroyed and no aid has been able to reach Jacmel yet. There is no heavy machinery to be able to clean up debris and the hospital in Jacmel collapsed in the earthquake.

There are many organizations doing good work for Haiti right now, but if you have not yet gotten involved, please consider donating to the Hands & Feet Project which is actively serving and caring for 73 children ranging from 2 months to 9 years old. Various involved parties are in the process of trying to secure supplies and the transportation means necessary to get the supplies into Jacmel. They can use your thoughts, prayers and donations. Visit them at www.hafproject.org.

Julie’s November Media Round-up

Ahhh… the baby movies. We’re baaaack. Except this time, I have the big boys to tell me what’s hot and what’s not. And, honestly, they’re loving the old Baby Einstein’s (which is why I’m not returning mine for a refund.) We recently found a few new ones DVDs to enjoy as well. And, of course, some new music which is always welcome in our Pilot.

sosmartSo Smart! Productions and Echo Bridge Home Entertainment released a new DVD series this fall. In the So Smart! Baby’s First Word Stories series, which is aimed at ages 1-3, children and parents watch stories based around the theme word, in the case of the sample we received, House, Pets, Get Dressed. Through the main characters, children are introduced to the theme word, then sentences and a story form around the base word. The DVD smoothly and calmly introduces young children to language, and how words form meaning. Of course, parents are encouraged to watch the DVD with the child and interact throughout.  The kids enjoyed watching this DVD together. The boys “educated” the baby, describing and narrating when the real narrators were quiet.
