Father’s Day: Logitech Harmony One Universal Remote

As I mentioned a few days ago, I love Father’s Day gifts that I’ll appreciate too (what – is that wrong?) and it’s a win-win with the Logitech Harmony One Advanced Universal Remote.

He gets: a fun new gadget to program, play with (hello touchscreen!) and impress his friends with and one less thing to lose

You get: a coffee table free of Mt. Remotes and a one-step process for explaining to the sitter how to turn the TV on

I swore we’d never be one of those people with remotes littering the couch, but over the years we moved up from 1 to 2 to now 6 different remotes to control different media devices. And if the clutter weren’t bad enough, good luck trying to find all three at the same time that you need to turn on a DVD. Logitech to the rescue! With their Harmony collection of universal remotes, you can find the perfect one to match your price range and media requirements and finally bring harmony to your living room.

Here’s an overview of the features of the Logitech Harmony One Advanced Universal Remote:

- Control up to 15 devices. Imagine a pile of 15 remotes, even 8 remotes! Some of you may even have a special basket or drawer JUST FOR REMOTES.  No more! The Harmony One Advanced Universal Remote does it all.

- One-Touch Activity Control. Love this feature. It means I don’t need to write down a 12-step process for my babysitter or in-laws on how to work the DVD player or turn on the music. The remote has activity choices like “Watch TV” or “Play a DVD” that automatically turn on all required devices to the correct setting with the press of ONE BUTTON. Love it.

- Rechargeable. So many things eat batteries in our house, I’m glad that the Harmony One remote won’t be one of them. The rechargeable base saves you cash and with a designated place to put the remote for charging, it makes it a little more likely you’ll be able to find it when you need it.

- Easy set-up. Logitech makes set-up simple. Load the installation CD and attach the remote to your computer with the included USB cable. The software guides you through adding your specific devices and choosing how you want to control them (e.g. control the sound through your stereo system, not through your TV). Logitech remotes have support for 5000+ brands and 255,000+ devices, but just to make sure, it’s good to double check the compatibility of your devices here.

The Harmony One Advanced Universal Remote retails for $249.99 but you can take a step down the price ladder and pick up the Harmony 650 for a sale price of $79.99 (controls up to 5 devices, no touch screen) or move a step up and try the Harmony 900 which use radio frequency (RF) and infrared (IR) technology. The benefit of adding in RF? It will work through cabinets which means you can control all your media equipment while keeping them hidden from view.

Pick one up for Father’s Day today!

Father’s Day: Web TV With Boxee

I’m all about Father’s Day gift that dads will love and moms will appreciate which is why I’ve been having fun trying out the Boxee Box from D-Link. Here’s the low-down on this great gift idea for dad.

What Is It?

The Boxee Box is a media device that allows you to access internet content, online sources for TV and movies, your personal photos, music, movies and more all on you HDTV.

What’s Included?

The Boxee comes with a, well, box-type shape device and a dual-sided remote. Very cool. One side is called the “Simple Side” which has a play/pause button, menu/go back button and a select/directional pad to navigate through menus. The other side of the remote has a mini-QWETY keyboard which makes it super easy to type in the address of your favorite website or search your music collection for a specific artist.

What Can You Do?

Movies – You can access a collection of free movies from sources like myLifetime, SnagFilms, EZtakes and Databazaar, upload your own movies from a hard drive or network, or access a gazillion movies on Netflix (if you are a member) or VUDU ($3.99 to rent). I may never set foot in another video store again.

Watch TV shows – The Boxee aggregates thousands of your favorite TV shows from the web into one convenient location. For him, there’s Family Guy, Nova, The Office and The Daily Show. For you, there’s CSI, Chuck and Glee and the kids will be thrilled to see episodes of iCarly, Dinosaur Train, Scooby-Doo and SuperWhy. The quality of the playback will definitely depend on your Internet connection, but overall, I have been very pleased.

Apps – Boxee currently has apps (with more being added all the time!) that tailor stuff from the web for your TV. There are lots of apps that will look familiar (Netflix, Pandora, vimeo, CNN, TED, Facebook, MLB, HBO Go) and lots of new ones to introduce you to a whole host of new content. My one complaint is that I wish the apps offered a bit more description about what they are and the type of content they offered. There were a bunch that I’d never heard of and the little description that pops up when you click on it was only marginally useful in giving me a clear idea of what it was about.

Connect With Friends – As if you weren’t already connected enough, Boxee lets you connect with friends on Facebook, Twitter and Google Buzz to find out what your friends are watching and recommending.

Play Your Own Stuff – Whether it’s your personal music collection, home movies, funny video clips from your last vacation or photos of the kids, you can drop your media to the included SD card and upload it to Boxee. Never have your friends and family crowd around your computer screen again to see that slideshow from your last trip.

The bad news….

You can’t watch just ANYTHING off the web. Websites are getting smart and making you pay to watch certain content on certain devices. Take Hulu for example. You have access to thousands of clips and movies for free on your computer, but try to access Hulu.com on Boxee and you’ll need to join Hulu Plus (for $7.99 a month) to view anything at all.

The Competition

Are their other devices that do similar things? Yes, but Boxee’s got them beat in a number of areas. Check out their comparison chart here.

How I’ve Been Using Boxee

- watching free YouTube workout videos full size on my TV instead of trying to maneuver the laptop to the floor (I’m loving the POP Pilates series)

- my own large-scale digital frame to easily show pictures from our last adventure

- catching up on old shows (Sex in the City and SNL) and discovering new ones (Modern Family, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia)

- pulling up an Instant Watch clip on Netflix of Diego or Backyardigans for the kids to watch when I need 20 minutes of silence

Buy Now! Whether you’re looking for a gift for dad or just another way to connect all your media together, visit D-Link to learn more about Boxee and find a retailer near you. Or hop on over to Amazon and get one in the mail to you today for $199.

Garden Party World: Fun Virtual Play for Kids, Plus #Giveaway

Updated:  Congrats to Kristin H for winning the year subscription to Garden Party!

My kids have been playing on a new virtual world site called GardenParty.  It’s a cute little site where you customize a character, have a treehouse and a garden.  Users play games and interact (via a safe chat type mode) with other players while they grow things in their garden and build a home in their treehouse.

Garden Party is free to play but there is a paid subscription to get into member-only places.

If you’re looking for a fun new site for your kids, check this out.  My 7 & 4 year old have been playing with it and it doesn’t require too much reading so the 4 year old is even able to play on his own.   Visit GardenPartyWorld.com to check it out.

Family Fun in Downtown #Philly: Mars Needs Moms & the Franklin Institute

Jon and I took the kids to an advance screening of the new movie, Mars Needs Moms on Saturday in downtown Philadelphia.

It was kind of neat as they held it in an old theater at the Franklin Institute, our local science and technology museum.

There were some tear-jerky scenes in which you weren’t sure what was going to happen to the Mom. Cole was so worried about her fate that he ended up spending the entire second half of the movie on my lap clinging to me – you can see in the photo where he wouldn’t let go after the movie too!

Mars Needs Moms features the voices of Seth Green and Joan Cusack and opens in theaters across the country on March 11, 2011.

So after the movie, we checked out some of the neat displays at the Franklin Institute afterwords:

We headed into the city for lunch where we had a great lunch at the Continental Midtown.  Isn’t this a cute photo of my three guys?:

Watch Netflix, Hulu & More on Your TV with Orb

We love watching streaming tv and movies on Netflix.  Mostly, we use it for our kids and we do it via our Wii, where I’ve downloaded the Wii software.

But we only have one Wii and three tvs, so that leaves other spots in the house where we don’t have Netflix available.

Enter Orb TV.  Here’s how it work.  The Orb TV is a small disc-sized product that connects to your TV.  It communicates wirelessly with your smart phone, home computer and Wi-Fi to reach the Internet.  Set it up with your Netflix TV and use the controller to access your Netflix!  Or use the controller to watch hundreds of shows via Hulu.  It’s a pretty cool idea for a piece of technology and a neat way to have another TV in your house that will display streaming tv.

I’m using my iPhone as the controller so when we’re using the Orb TV product, it’s like using my iPhone like a tv remote.  It’s pretty neat.  And the price point is pretty competitive with other Internet TV products available these days – for $99 you can purchase an Orb TV Player on Orb.com for $99.

They also have an Orb Music Player which sells for $69.

Top Tech Gifts from Staples for the Holiday Season

Image and video hosting by TinyPicWith roughly 12 days left til Christmas day, if you haven’t finished your holiday shopping yet— Staples can help! As a teacher and now the mother of a kindergartner, I depend on Staples for school supplies. I knew they had computers and phones, but never realized how many top tech items they carried until I attended the Staples Holiday event last week, hosted by Audrey McClelland of MomGenerations.com. Audrey showed us some really cool items that Staples offers like the Kindle, Flip Video Recorder, Beats by Dr. Dre Headphones and many more. I liked that you can play with interactive displays to see if the items are going to work for the person you’re buying it for. Plus, Staples offers coupons, a price-match guarantee and a rewards program.

These are our top picks for tech items offered by Staples:
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Amazon’s Kindle DX ($379.00) features a 9.7inch screen with a larger font size perfect for viewing full pages of PDF documents or reading materials like newspapers where users can see a full article on a single page in an amazingly sharp display. This can only be purchased in store, not at Staples.com.

Olympus® Stylus Tough 3000 ($199.99) is a digital camera that’s waterproof, freeze-proof and shockproof — you can literally toss it around! Exclusive for this holiday season, the red model comes with a free adventure kit, complete with a float strap and neoprene case (red available in-store and online, pink, blue and green available at Staples.com, ).

I’m a little obsessed with Flip Video cameras – because they’re so easy to use and the price isn’t out of this world. They combine pocket-size portability with a 2-inch viewing screen. At Staples, you’ll find the Flip UltraHD ($129 on sale)and pocket-sized Flip MinoHD ($179) both offering high quailty HD video.

Beats by Dr. Dre headphones features a built-in mic for hands-free talk on your music or iPhone.  You also get playback control of your iPhone or iPod (including pause, next track and volume). It’s available in two models, the Beats Solo on-ear style (black or white, $179.99 in most stores and Staples.com) and iBeats in-ear buds (black or chrome, $99.99 in most stores and Staples.com).

If you’re budget’s a little smaller, consider Omnitech’s products. Omnitech Wireless Headphones ($30 in-store only) are perfect for listening to favorite TV shows or radio stations up to 50ft away while working throughout the house and without disturbing others. Omnitech Wired Noise-Cancelling Headphones ($20) are portable and perfect for the business traveler.  But what I really liked was the Omnitech Sport MP3 Headset ($25) which lets users download MP3′s directly to their headphones and holds up to 2GB of storage. Omnitech also offers some stocking stuffers that are really cool — check out Omnitech’s Mini Speaker ($10). It plays music from any device equipped with a 3.5mm headphone jack; including MP3 players, notebooks, mobile phones, and gaming devices. The Speaker expands for better sound quality and it includes a built in rechargeable battery. It’s great to tote from room to room.

If you need more recommendations, check out the Staples Interactive Holiday Tech Guide or on Staples’ Facebook Page.

Disclosure: I received a gift card and the mini speaker for attending the Staples Holiday Event. All opinions expressed are my own.

Table Topics: Keep Conversation Going at Thanksgiving & Christmas

My friend Zareen and I were out somewhere recently when we saw these Table Topics.  (Where were we, Z?)  Anyway, we were remarking how neat it would be to have one of these cards set on each plate at Thanksgiving. It would be something different and fun to get conversation rolling.

This version I’m highlighting here is Table Topics: Family Gathering, which I thought was appropriate with the upcoming holiday season.  It’s $25 at Amazon.com and ships for free.  Hosting Thanksgiving or Christmas at your house?  Consider these for something fun to get the conversation going.

Here are some sample questions:

  • What cars has your family owned?
  • What’s your greatest strength as a family?
  • What family pet would you love to spend an afternoon with?
  • What physical characteristics do you have from your family?

Table Topics: Family Gathering is $25 and if you don’t like that version, there are plenty of others (like Girls Night Out and Kids Travel)

iPhone App review: Counting Fun With Splish Splash Inn

I love my iPhone – and so do my kids. Though I usually only let them use it for special occasions and emergencies (like a surprise 20-minute wait at the doctor’s office), the iPhone has a ton of apps that provide kids – even toddlers – with educational and fun games. The Splish Splash Inn is one of the newest ones I’ve added to my phone.

New from Carolyn Merriman and her company Shortstack, the Splish Splash Inn teaches the under 4-set about number recognition 1-10, counting and sea life like manta rays, crabs and eels. Designer Divya Srinivasan has created a vibrant and colorful underwater world that entices kids to click, learn and explore. Kids open the rooms of the inn to discover what number and what sea creature lives within.

Clicking on the sea creatures reveals a variety of bells, chimes, drums and other sounds to play with, dragging the creatures around repositions them on the screen, and tilting the phone lets you make them swim from side to side. Plus with the option of three different language settings (English, Spanish and French), the app suddenly has my 2.5-year-old saying “dos tortugas” around the house.

Make learning numbers, sea life and languages fun with the Splish Splash Inn app. Available for the iPhone and iPad at iTunes for $1.99.

Movie Review: Life As We Know It

Image and video hosting by TinyPicI recently attended a screening of Life As We Know It”.  It stars Katherine Heigl as Holly Berenson, a cafe owner, and Josh Duhamel, as Eric Messer, a network sports technical director. The two singles are set up on a disastrous blind date by their best friends, Alison and Peter. The date goes so badly that they don’t even leave the front of Holly’s apartment! After that, the movie shows their mutual dislike, during Alison’s and Peter’s wedding and as they adore Alison and Peter’s daughter Sophie (they’re her godparents). After a tragic accident, they become the only people Sophie has in the world. They have to put their differences aside and learn how to co- parent Sophie. It doesn’t go smoothly and you see them struggle to juggle everything and figure everything out — just like regular parents. Eventually they learn how to get along and eventually fall for each other. While we knew that was going to happen (they are both gorgeous) and the trailer’s giving that away anyway –  I laughed, I cried and really liked the movie.

The movie did raise a good point — who would you trust to take care of your child if you and your spouse passed away?  The parents were smart enough to have a will and guardianship set up, though they should have let Holly and Messer in on that. [Read more...]

A Wine Club Specially Designed for Moms. What a Fabulous Idea!

Before getting pregnant, sharing a bottle of wine with my husband or a good friend was one of my favorite things to do.  Now that our little one has an 8pm bedtime, I have a little bit of time to enjoy a glass of wine before hitting the hay myself.  I’ve typically relied on my husband to keep a selection of wines that I’ll enjoy in the house.  I have an idea about my favorite kinds, but he’s a much better wine shopper (a.k.a. wine snob) and I just don’t have the time to hit the liquor store with a baby in tow.  A brand new service takes care of all of my wine worries: California Wine Club’s Wine Moms Series!

“Stop wasting time trying to find good wine from a sea of unknown labels.  Now, with a little help from some friends, you can get award-winning, limited-production wine delivered to your door!”

For just $35.95 per month plus $13 in shipping and handling, you’ll receive an armchair tasting and tour of an artisan, “mom and pop” California winery including:

  • Two bottles of limited-production wine
  • The Uncorked newsletter featuring wine tips, tasting notes and recipes
  • A copy of The Sipping Point and a wine tote with your first order
  • Big savings on the wines you love: reorder and save up to 50% off normal retail
  • Plus much, much more!

And each bottle is guaranteed to be one you love.  If it’s not, they’ll replace it with something you do love!  You can choose your shipments to include a red and white bottle, two reds or two whites.  You can also schedule shipments as gifts in any monthly increment you desire.

I guess the most important part to tell you is that this wine is actually really good!  My shipment included Sylvester Vineyard’s 2008 Kiara Sauvignon Blanc and the 2007 Syrah.  The real judge was my husband and although he was skeptical, he really enjoyed both bottles!  When ordering, enter the code “style” and you’ll receive an extra bottle with your first shipment!  It’s a great deal for any mom!

Great headphones for kids: JVC Flats

Technically these aren’t “children’s” headphones.  But I don’t know about the rest of you, but the ear buds that come with Apple products (iPhone, iPod) don’t seem to stay in my kids’ ears all that well.  In fact, they pretty much pop out as soon as we put them in.

We’ve definitely had some frustration with it over the years when we’re traveling.

So last winter, we got a pair of JVC Flats to sample.  My oldest son loved them!  Finally, a pair of headphones that will stay on his head and block out outside noise.

They retail for $19.95 and you can purchase various colors on Amazon with free shipping.  The red ones only are on sale for $15.26!

Nate uses his pair on the train up to NYC last spring to meet Jennifer Garner

I stole my son’s DSi to play Cooking Mama 3

Yes, its true. Guilty as charged. But I’ve had a copy of Cooking Mama 3: Shop & Chopsitting in my gift closet for months, waiting to be played. And while Big found opportunities to play his favorites (which include Petz Dolphinz Encounter, New Super Mario Bros. Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga), Cooking Mama 3 remained contained in plastic wrap, though, knowing Mama, anxious to get out.

I’ve never tried Cooking Mama 1 or 2, or the wii version, but I’ve always heard great things. So, like most people, I was expecting a three-quel to be not so hot. But its really fun! I love manipulating controls to quickly create a meal. Its hugely addicting, a great time waster, of course. But totally something that I need when I need to destress and get away from real life. And, because I do love cooking, this is really, really fun for me.

The game has recipes and lots of mini games. My favorite is when you mix it up and create your own recipes, because that’s what I like to do in the kitchen, and this one makes you actually win. Which is a lot better than the kids reactions. Its also really fun to the do the shopping. Seriously, you’re having fun in the grocery store. Against a clock you have to race to shop, but if you bump into another person in the store, you have to do a mini game. Which hurts your time but is so fun its totally worth it.

Now here’s my problem: Big saw me playing Cooking Mama 3. And he’s already better at it than me.

I received a copy of Cooking Mama 3 as a sample, as well as Petz Dolphinz Encounter.

Powermat Wireless Charging: Get Rid of the Charger Clutter

I seem to have a lot of mobile devices to keep charged in my home. Keeping all the chargers straight and neat is challenging – Powermat Wireless Charging is a much better way to charge and get rid of all those chargers!

We recently tested out several of their products. The Home and Office Mat ($99) is excellent – you can charge up to 3 devices simultaneously. All you do is plug in the mat and place Powermat receiver cases on your favorite gear and then place them on the mat to charge. Powermat offers receiver cases that work on iphone 3G ($69.99),  ipod touch ($39.99), as well as many more. If you have a device that isn’t supported by a Powermat Reciever case, use the included Powercube Universal Receiver, with comes with a 8 mini and micro USB tips included (other tips sold separately).

Adjustable sound and light indications give feedback that charging is occurring   – while a small magnetic pull ensures perfect alignment and optimal charging efficiency. I would recommend keeping this out of your bedroom if you plan to charge a device late at night (my husband hates the sound). We also liked the Powermat 2x ($59.99) that charges 2 devices at the same time.

If you are frequent traveler, you may prefer the Portable Mat ($99), which folds up and charges up to 3 devices simultaneously. Comes with  a travel case with magnetic closure and a Powercube Universal Receiver with 8 tips.

All Powermat devices come with a power adapter that comes will work with a wide range of voltages (100-240VAC). The adapter also meets Energy Star level 5 efficiency requirements.

Thank you to Powermat for providing product samples.
