Little Uni: Unique-ness in a must-have gift

Little Uni found a little niche. We all know how popular cutesy-t-shirts are. And we all know how much mamas and papas love their children's names, especially seeing those names on everything. So Little Uni took those loves and combined them, coming up with a truly unique concept.

They personalize sweet and modern baby shapes with the message or name of your choosing. So, "ryan" can be on a green and blue stripe truck and "rian" can be on a pink vintage wallpaper flower. As a designer, you have over 20 choices of graphics and color-patterns, all mod and stylish. Available in sizes 3-6 months through 4 Years, the shirts fit snuggly; as usual, I recommend ordering a size up.

Also available are the same graphics with pre-created messages. A great idea for what's-her-name. (As in, I know I have to order a gift for that little Smith girl's birthday next week, but I can't remember her name.) Or baby-to-be who will certainly need some adorable, original clothing.

You'll want to gift a Little Uni to your little one, or as a gift to your friend or co-worker's baby. And its a perfect first-birthday gift. Because its completely what you want. Completely unique. Completely for that little uni that's going to wear it.

8 months pregnant: Using a Prenatal Education System

When does learning begin? In the womb, when brain development occurs? The folks at BabyPlus believe so. They have created a prenatal education system to help your child get a jump-start on learning, while they are still in the womb.

I have to admit -- at first when I heard about this system I was a bit skeptical. But after reading more and more about it (including the tons of 5-star reviews on sites like Amazon) I was intrigued.

So what is it, you ask?

BabyPlus is a series of 16 scientifically designed sounds that resemble a mother's heartbeat. The rhythm of the sounds increases incrementally as the pregnancy progresses. These sounds introduce your child to a sequential learning process, which is supposed to help them be better learners later in life.

To do the lessons, you wear a fannie-pack type of pouch with a unit inside for an hour, twice a day. BabyPlus should be used anytime between 18-32 weeks of pregnancy. I started at 30 weeks and will continue to try the lessons until I deliver. (And then, of course, I will report back to you about how well I feel it worked after my son is born.) So far wearing the system is easy, but I do find myself trying to find two one-hour periods when I can wear the unit within my own home. (It's not exactly the kind of thing I want to wear running errands or when I am at the park with my son!) I tend to wear it in the morning, after getting dressed, and at night before bed.

BabyPlus babies and kids are known to have many of the same positive traits. For example, BabyPlus babies at birth and infancy:

* More readily nurse
* Have increased ability to self soothe
* Are more interactive and responsive
* Are better relaxed and alert at birth

And later in life, these children demonstrate:

* Earlier developmental milestones
* Improved school readiness
* Enhanced intellectual abilities
* Greater creativity and independence
* Longer attention spans

I will have to wait and see if my son will exhibit any of these traits. And if he does, who is to say that it is from BabyPlus alone? Could it be genetics? Environment? Pre-natal medical care? It is hard to debate nature vs. nurture, but IF BabyPlus can positively affect my unborn child after he is born, then why not?!

Check out the product, learn about the science behind it, and read some of the testimonials. (If you are really interested, check out some of the testimonials on Amazon, too!)

Be Chic, Don't Freak

timiandleslie.jpg Like many new moms, I started out motherhood fully obsessed with Diaper bags. Motherhood was scary and unfamiliar, but accessories, I knew. I considered myself an expert on changing bags, long before I was an expert on changing diapers.

Once I was an expert at the diapering, however, I found myself gazing longingly back to my former playground. The "regular" handbag section. I assembled a clever collection of pouches and ziplocs for wipes, clothes, snacks. One day I popped it all into a much neglected designer bag from the good old days. I proudly showed this to my mommy friends. “See," I bragged, "I don’t need a /diaper/ bag!”.

“Oh yeah, haute mama?” they laughed, sadly shaking their heads, “So where exactly do you put the sippy cup?”

“Sippy cup… uh… uh… sippy….” I stammered. “Sippy cups go in the stroller holder! Or in the car. Plenty of room in there for the sippies!”

I shuddered. Although milk may come from a cow, the mere thought of a sippy cup full of milk in a chic leather designer bag is enough to cause me to freak out.

I could feel the consternation of the other moms. I could see the way they eyed my toddler for possible signs of dehydration. I knew what they were thinking! And worse, I knew they had a point. But I was sick of checking my sense of style at the door. There had to be a solution. Something that made me feel chic. Without making me freak.

The Femme Chic collection from Timi and Leslie, was the answer to my fashion prayers.

On the outside this new bag from the well respected manufacturer, is pure class. The elegantly quilted tote, in rich luxurious leather reminds me of Marc Jacobs or Chanel - it has a pure designer vibe. It lives up to the Femme Chic name. And it’s pleasantly lightweight for a leather bag of this size. It sits comfortably on the shoulder. And the color choices like caramel, coco and noir/black reflect the classy vibe completely. These bags go with everything, from jeans to work clothes.

But it’s what’s inside that makes the difference. Big difference. A waterproof croc embossed lining. With plenty of slots for sippy cups. And whatever else you need to tote. Pockets galore. It’s the first bag that I’d actually put (deep breath) milk in. Without flinching. My children need thirst no more.

Another great functional feature that this bags boasts are the fully hidden stroller straps. Integrated into the interior, they make the bucket tote completely stroller friendly in two quick clips. So you need not fret about bringing any other bag to the mall. Don’t be surprised if you get asked, by some non mommy types, where you got the gorgeous purse.

Mommies with Style, order your Timi and Leslie Femme Chic bag from My Little Ducks and get free shipping plus a "Duck Bucks" Certificate worth $20 off your next purchase when you enter the phrase "Duck Bucks" in the comments field at checkout.

Phototales, they're all about your kids!

phototales.jpgThe world revolves around them and now the story does too. Thanks to Phototales, a new company producing amusing stories for children that utilizes pictures of them and their parents.

There are four stories to choose from : A “Potty Story”, a “Birthday Story”, a “When I Grow Up” story that features your child in an alphabetically arranged array of careers and a funny and adorable "Princess Story” about a carrot loving princess. Each book is custom created and bound for your child, and features them as the main character. It’s a special keepsake to enjoy now, and all of you to cherish later.

Kids love to see their names in print and add in their pictures, and you have a recipe for sheer delight. Even my 7 and 10 yr old daughters loved their books so much that they both insisted on bringing them in to school to show them off to their classmates and read to their class. And I’m hoping that the potty book I’m ordering will motivate my son to use the potty sooner too. Something about “seeing” it, making him believe it!

Ordering the books is simple. Mommies with style get 10% off when you enter MWS10 at checkout in the comments box on the last page of checkout (not the coupon code box). You will be charged the regular amount, and then refunded the 10% back.

dropps one in

We all know that using a High Efficiency washer and dryer will help the environment. Here's another laundry tip:

dropps, a Dissolvable, Ready-to-use, Organic, Premeasured Packet, is a simple way to help. Instead of measuring and pouring your old detergent, you can grab a dropp out of the bag and literally drop it into your tub. There's no measuring, and it will work in all high efficiency as well as regular washers.

We've been using dropps for about a week now and I can't get over how easy this product is. They claim its a time saver, and I see how... especially if I were still in college (file this one for high school graduation gifts! There's no need to lug the whole box of detergent to the basement laundromat!)

While I'm beyond college, I'm using dropps because of the ease, and because of that O-word, Organic. Using all-natural, bio degradable and environmentally friendly ingredients, dropps parent company, Ardmore, PA-based Cot'nWash's mission is to provide environmentally friendly household cleaning products to today's families. And need I mention that dropps helps the Earth in another way? They minimize the waste--no more need to trash those huge plastic bottles or bins holding all of your detergents. The packaging is small and light. Still plastic, but a whole lot less.

Use code MOMWS1 and receive a $3 discount off any purchase through May 4, 2007. Shipping is free.

And, yes, dropps clean well, too.

While we're discussing laundry, a few tips provided by Greenpeace:

  • Only do full loads of laundry, use as little water as possible.
  • Up to 90 percent of the energy used for washing clothes goes to heating the water. A warm wash and cold rinse will work just as well as a hot water wash and a warm rinse on nearly all clothes.
  • Only wash clothes that need it. Outer layers of clothing like shirts, sweaters and pants can be worn more than once without laundering.
  • Hang clothing outside to dry or inside in a dry, warm room and save energy.
  • If you must use a machine to dry your clothes, clean your dryer’s lint trap after every load to keep the air circulating efficiently. Lint build-up is also a fire hazard.

Josha and the Oogie Boogies

wipes_bags.jpgWhen my kids have nightmares, I am always ready with an "Anti Monster" spritz bottle filled with water, glitter and a few drops of lavender oil. It seems to do the trick to banish their oogie-boogies.

Lucky kids, their oogie-boogies are mostly imaginary. My own require something a little stronger. For example, there is the "uh-oh baby don't lick that shopping cart handle!" oogie. And that pms induced migraine-coming-on boogie. I tried the anti monster spritz on myself but I just ended up slightly damp and sparkly. And still feeling crummy.

And then I discovered Josha wipes. Which I now keep tucked into every purse, diaper bag, gym tote, glove compartment and junk drawer in my life. These little mint and lavender infused wipies have the power to refresh and renew not just surfaces and skin, but my state of mind. Originally created for wiping off yoga mats, they are good for so much more. They ward off bad feelings like nausea and they kill germs.

It may seems small, but sometimes its the little things that make a big difference. For me, thats my Josha wipes!

Dress your baby in Baby Soy

I've really gotten into this week's MWS assignment: Green Week. In doing so, I've gone beyond just reviewing products and stores... I've found myself researching new ways that my family can become more green. One area that I'm planning to incorporate is through Earth-friendly clothing. So, those of you expecting babies, you may not be surprised when I gift you clothing made of soybean fiber, from Baby Soy.

Soybean fiber is a sustainable textile fiber made from renewable natural resources. In producing soybean fibers, waste is turned into useful products (in this case, fibers used in the fabrics.) In creating soybean fiber, there is no extra burden on the earth. Basically, its like recycled paper... waste is turned into something rich that can be used again and again... therefore greatly reducing the impact on the environment.

The really good news: while you're helping Mother Nature by purchasing clothing made of soybean fibers, if you're shopping at Baby Soy, you're introducing others to a product that not only is healthy for the environment, but it looks adorable. So, at very practical prices, you can pass on a great resource that people are happy to share with others. Spend $100 and get free shipping.

Nursing Naturally

blessednest.jpg
I tried some nursing pillows when I had my son a few years ago and I have to say, I really wasn’t a fan. I found them not very comfortable or helpful for me or him, and not that cute to have around your house or your lap. But I just discovered Blessed Nest’s All Organic Nesting Pillow. It is so comfortable for both my daughter and I. It really conforms to both my body shape and hers. My daughter liked it so much she fell right asleep on it! It’s also a really nice looking pillow. It is moon shaped with organic cotton French loop Terry and designer prints (there are many that you can choose from) around the front. I’ve found it to be great for tummy time too. My daughter loves to lie on it on the floor. The pillow is filled with buckwheat from a domestic farm dedicated to organic practices.

Soft on the Tushie, Sweet on the Atmosphere

Some of my most used items are from Cover Cuddles, which I first shared with you in September 2006. (Read the review here.) My now 19-month-old one-year-old is so much calmer when his bum is being changed against a soft cover.

Michelle (our own "mmaimp" from our boards and owner and creator of Cover Cuddles) has been making the changing pad covers in Organic Cottons since she started her company last year. They create custom organic contour changing pad covers in organic cotton velour, organic cotton sherpa and organic cotton/bamboo velour. While, the bamboo is not certified organic, it's a great renewable source for material and, she tells me it's super silky, too.

Rather than changing a baby on a harsh fabric, invest in a changing pad cover that makes you proud to place your child's tush. Use code MWS20 for 20% off through June 1, 2007.

Not a day goes by that I don't crave Dagoba

bricksdropscloseup.jpg Occasionally when I go to events for Mommies with style, I get goodies. And sometimes, when I am lucky, those goodies include chocolate. And when I am very, very lucky, the chocolate is from chocolate masters - Dagoba.

Of course we all know that not all chocolate is created equal. There are supermarket chocolate bars and then there there is the magical alchemy of cacao that is Dagoba. Certified organic and containing more antioxidants than red wine or tea, Dagoba chocolate is one indulgence that is good for you. And the taste is incomparable.

The company specializes in artisanal blends, made from cacao harvested in ecologically sustainable ways. Even if you are not a chocoholic (um... like some people who happen to be typing this review) you will notice a difference in the way Dagoba chocolates taste.

And you will crave it, long after it is gone. Which in our case, did not take very long! Note to self: hide chocolate goodies from children!

Purchase Dagoba online at their site or click to find a store near you that carries the brand.

Move for Change

earthmoving.jpg Planning a move anytime soon? Wondering where you will get your boxes and your packing materials? Or how you will dispose of them after you are done?

Ever think about what all those cardboard boxes are doing to the enviroment? And your wallet?! At an average cost of 3 bucks a box, moving is not cheap. And what a waste, that all that money is literally ending up in a landfill! I used to sigh and do my best, free-cycling boxes via the yahoogroups freecycle lists and hitting up local markets for their discards, but in the back of my head I thought, there has to be a better way.

And now there is. At least in Southern California. Thanks to Earth Friendly Moving, inventor of the Reco Pack.

The Reco Pack is a brilliant and simple invention. Its a plastic tote, made from some of the worst types of consumer waste - plastic household chemical containers (such as bleach and detergent).

For a buck a "box" (tote) a week, Earth Friendly Moving delivers the totes to you.They come in several sizes so you can choose the size you need. After you move, they pick them up. They offer several companion products as well, such as recycled paper rolls and pressed "peanuts" made from starch and paper, that can be used in the garden. Supplies are delivered on pallets made out of... get this... recycled poopy diapers! Yep. They call em "poopy pallets". Don't worry, the diapers are completely sanitized and processed. The fibers are extracted and bound together in a plastic medium, and molded into the pallets. The pallets then last up to 30 yrs.

The nice thing about Reco packs and the other supplies that Earth Friendly Moving deliver is that it is a two pronged solution. The materials for the supplies you need are mined from landfills - making use of destructive waste. And you are now also not adding to landfills with your moving box waste. So every household who chooses to move this way is making a truly significant contribution to the earth's wellness. In fact the average move with Reco Pack supplies, using 100 totes, saves 256 lbs of trash from a landfill. This also equals saving 3 trees, 64 lbs of toxic carbon dioxide emissions/pollution, and removes 83 lbs of paper, 600 poopy diapers, and 7400 of the really really bad type of plastic containers. Go on and pat yourself on the back you eco warrior you!

Earth Friendly Moving is hoping to expand all over the US in the next five yrs. So no matter where you live, think about calling them the next time you plan a move. Not only will you save vast amounts of money on landfill clogging boxes, you will be part of an elegant, tree and earth saving solution, rather than part of the problem. And your neighbors will truly be green with envy when you have no boxes to dispose of!

A snack worth sinking your teeth into

I'm learning there's something about Organics that makes food tastier. Remember the smoooshed fruits of the past? The ones that were sent to school in your lunchbox? Kind of stretchy, kind of tasty, but, really, not all that good. But along comes FruitaBü™ and smoooshed fruits are suddenly yummy and healthy. The boys and I can't get enough of FruitaBü™'s Smoooshed™ Fruits. We've been snacking them down for a few weeks now, and each time, we want more than just one.

Full of flavor, they're also fun to eat. Available in Twirls and Flats, its a tasteful bite made of 100% USDA certified Smoooshed Organic Fruits™. No sugar added.

Available at Stretch Island Fruit Company and Amazon, you might want to order a bunch. They're individually wrapped, easy to toss into my gym bag (and becoming my post-Pilates snack of choice.) And my son is eats at least one a day at lunchtime at school.

Organics at I'm Still Me

ism.jpg
In January, I introduced you to the Oopc! made by I'm Still Me. This spring, I'm Still Me debuted their organics line.

Available in 100% certified Organic cotton, the Oopc! is a mother's hero. My youngest was really sick with a stomach virus. Really sick. And I was tired (as we all become) of changing his outfits (and mine) again and again and again. I had just received a sample of the organic Oopc!. What could be better for a sick child? When I was holding him for comfort, the Oopc! hung over my shoulder, protecting my clothes. And when he was on his own, he wore it around his neck. Now, we're lucky, we have two Oopc!'s. But I was much happier washing and changing the Oopc! than I was my sweaters and his outfits.

Also available in Organic cotton at I'm Still Me, a travel changing pad and a changing mat. Use code MWS07 for 15% Off any Item on their site (including the exciting new line going live next week -- a surprise is coming!!) Coupon good thru May 31, 2007.

Organic AND Yummy!: Newman's Own Alphabet Cookies

These cookies are so good, my Mom has been shipping them from Florida regularly (until I recently found that our local grocery store has started carrying them)

We first discovered these Newman's Own Organic Alphabet Cookies on a trip to visit my parents. They are a great snack for babies on up through adults. They're square cookies, each one with a letter of the alphabet on it. We love reading all the letters - hey, what could be better, healthy food that teaches?

No trans fatty acids, lower in fat than most cookies, it's organic - and the sugar count is so low it's hard to believe they are cookies. They taste great too. The arrowroot flavor is our favorite.

You can buy them on the Shop Natural site, use coupon code MWSEARTHDAY for 10% off your order of that or any other good on their site (they have a wealth of great organic food products
