Why Webkinz are Cool

Webkinz are a popular new toy. They are sold out almost everywhere! Our local toystore puts a sign on their door that says "No Webkins today, sorry" when they don't have them any more.

webkinz.jpgWebkins are popular with parents and with kids. They are little stuffed animals with a tag on their wrist. The tag has a code inside that lets you log on to webkinz world create a virtual version of your pet.

Some parents are afraid of their kids making friends on the computer because their friends might be 20 yr olds trying to find out where they live and all sorts of information. But in Webkinz World there is no way to share information like that. You can only choose from a list of questions and answers like "How are you today?" and "Fine" and "Do you want to play?" and "Sure, lets go!". Parents also like that Webkinz world is educational. It teaches kids stuff like budgeting your money.

I like to go to the Webkinz World Clubhouse where there are so many rooms to choose from. Each room has different acttivities or games. You can earn "W" money by winning games. Sometimes I play against other Webkinz owners. My pet has her own room which I get to design by buying things at the W shop. I like to go to the W shop and buy my webkin clothes, and furniture and I love to buy her food.

The types of Webkinz that I have seen are dogs, cats, pandas, pigs, horses, unicorns, elephants, polar bears, gorillas, frogs, monkeys, hippos, cows and lions. My favorite one is the Pig. I call mine "Pinky".

Here is a list of stores that sell Webkinz so you can find them in your town. They cost about $10 - $15.

Puella makes Mommy and Me Hip

puella.jpgMaking matchy with your infant is tricky business. The last thing you want to look like is the "stupid" from the "I'm with stupid tee" which can happen if you're not careful.

But this is never an issue when you and your baby are wearing clothing from Puella & Puella Petit. No kitschy phases here or tongue in cheek references to mom or dad's various talents. Just dreamily soft cottons with gentle pastel colored organic prints. The line is the zenith of casual chic. It has been featured in Lucky Magazine and is so beloved for it's simple, almost vintage appeal, that it just wasn't fair to leave the kiddos out. It's impossible not to adore these charming pieces which explains why Tori Spelling and Liam Aaron McDermott, Samantha Harris, Shanna Moakler and daughter Alabama, Rena Sofer and many more are snatching up the soft cotton pieces by this haute line

puelladress.jpgPuella dresses are kind to new moms and pregnant types as they are soft and comfy as a nightie, but look totally put together for summer. The empire styles work especially well on a variety of shapes, and are flattering to pregnant moms and postpartum moms as well. Samantha Harris wore a Bell Sleeve Puella dress in Rain ($140) to a recent event and picked up some baby items in a soft yellow for her baby, due this fall. The children's collection fits up to size three and includes tees, leggings, ruffle pants, onesies, blankets and dresses. The collection shares prints with the women's line and there are many colors/prints that are gender neutral, allowing moms to pick items to match their sons or daughters.

For a summer baby outfit without fuss I dig their ubersoft short sleeved onesies in windmills, nectar or vine ($35). A snap up tree print jacket in vine ($45) is just the thing to take the chill off any summer evening without overheating baby. Take your pick from the matching print items for yourself!

Party Haute-ier with Kidcosmic and Little Daydreamers

partygirl.jpgEveryone wants their kids to shine on their special day. If ever there was a photo-op moment, it's at a family party.

Birthdays and holidays are a very big deal for my family. We like to live it up. We like to get funky and show some spirit. Over the years we have collected quite an assembly of special day items. Including some fabulous hats and accessories from Little Daydreamers and clothing from Kid Cosmic.

Kidcosmic has been a boutique favorite and a personal favorite of mine for years. That is because they have celebration clothes down. Their fun line of clothes are practically custom tailored to fit your party theme. Choose from horses, assorted holidays, rock star, princess, sushi, tattoo prints and more. Their tiered skirts have just the right amount of twirl and sparkle to make any day special and are guaranteed to be favorite items, that little girls will beg to wear almost daily. They are well sewn and will hold up to multiple washes, still looking perfect for the next photo-op occasion, which is great news too.

Don't worry - Kidcosmic has not forgotten about the boys. They also make adorable themed camp shirts for the guys. Even the youngest family members can get in on the party act with pattern matched plastic coated bibs that are available in many prints. Mommies with Style save 15% off all regularly priced items on the Kidcosmic website when you enter coupon code MOMMY07 now through 8/31.

We like to finish off our party ensembles with hats from Little Daydreamers and sunglasses from Dr Peepers - both divisions of the Elope company. This creative, fun and inspired company is full of fantastic themed party and dress up wear items that are just irresistable. My favorite are their birthday cake hats and crowns. Over the years we've taken pictures of our kids on each and every birthday in Elope's birthday cake hat and it's such a treasured tradition in our home. Everyone gets excited about their day to wear the birthday hat. Check out the cake hats on their site or go all out with your child's theme choice - their dino, diva and fairy themed hats will make your birthday child feel like the ultimate party star.

You can find items from the entire Little Daydreamers and Dr Peepers lines at The Tree Builder.

Still Wearing Soft-Soles, and loving his "Mo-Mo" Elks

You all know how much I love soft-soled shoes. I am always so impressed by the adorable icons, the strength in the stitching, the buttery-soft leather; not to mention how good they are for growth. I have to say, I was afraid of withdraw when Wesley really started walking and wearing hard-soles.

Still, when offered a pair of Elk Shoes to review, I knew we had to test them. I originally saw them at a trade show last year and always remembered their characters to be so appealing. Plus, Wesley hadn't been in soft-soled shoes in some time, and I was interested to see his response now that he was used to hard-soles.

No surprise here, we weren't disappointed. Elk Shoes have a tighter elastic than many I've tested, and at first we had a tiny bit of trouble getting them over his heel. But I quickly learned to adjust my angle, and now they go on just like socks--without falling off later--no matter how active he is. The soft leather on the inside makes for very little of an imprint--showing little pressure. And, when given a choice, he keeps requesting to wear his "MoMo" shoes. ("MoMo" is monkey in our home, and the monkey shoes are one of Elk's biggest sellers.)

Being quite a bit more active, as an almost 2-year-old in the summer, our Elk's have seen quite a bit of recent action. They've been a surprising key to park days--a great alternative to mulch getting into his sandals. And the fact that they can be tossed in the wash (on gentle cycle) and then air-dried is fantastic--because my little man LOVES dirt.

Elk is newer to the market than some, but already they're making their way onto the feet of celebrities. Sean "Diddy" Combs' twins each have a pair of sweet pink Elks.

Available in sizes from newborn to 24 months, get free shipping on any retail order at Elk's website.

Little Docs for sensitive skin and eczema

So the baby has terrible skin. After having my first, I hoped for a second child with less sensitive skin than the first but I had no such luck. The baby has patches of eczema in a few places - on his ankles and wrists, several spots on his back and the worst is behind his knees.

I've tried various creams and lotions. Aquaphor, although it did wonders for his baby acne and to prevent diaper rash, did nothing. And all of the "traditional" and over-the-counter eczema creams have yet to help. The two items I've used now that have definitely helped improve matters are a hydrocortisone cream that my doctor prescribed, and Little Docs by Circle of Friends.

I've been using a combo of both so I can't say if one would have worked on its own but I do think it's a combo of both. I didn't like the idea of applying the hydrocortisone so many times a day, so using the Little Docs at various times has been great as his skin reacts well to it and it keeps him moisturized.

You can actually find it on Amazon. I've been using the Calming Cream and the Cooling Lotion. There's also a Shampoo & Body Wash that we have not yet tried. You can buy all three in a Starter Pack for $11; it's eligible for free shipping when you spend $25 or more. Right now, you can also get a $10 instant rebate on Amazon when you spend $100 or more on Beauty products (this is considered beauty). Use coupon code Beauty10.

The Mommy Purse

denny01.jpg.w300h252Lets face it as many diaper bags as we have we are always looking for the next one. Well I just got the next one. Rebecca Denny’s Mommy Purse. It is roomy, it comes in fabulous patterns and its multi-purpose. The Mommy Purse is meant to be the transition bag from a full size diaper bag. I found it to be able to carry everything I needed for an outing with my children. It easily held diapers & wipes for both, a sippy cup, a bottle, a few snacks, a change of clothes and The quality is great, the fabrics are elegant and the bottom of the bag as well as the inside and pocket linings are made of a waterproof material. The bag is spacious on the inside, has exterior pockets on the ends for bottles or sippy cups, exterior pockets on the side (perfect for easy access to my keys, cell phone and baby toys), and a magnetic snap closure to cover the top of the bag. I have to come back to the fabrics. It’s the gorgeous fabrics that make the bag. I just think it is a great bag for the summer.

9 Weeks Pregnant: B-Buckle To the Rescue

Even though I am pretty early in my pregnancy, my belly is "popping out" much sooner than with my first child. My maternity clothes are too big (and I'm not really ready yet to put them on yet). I still want to wear my low rise jeans -but they aren't buttoning! What can do? B-Buckle, created by the fab Jennifer Noonan, came to my rescue. To put it on, unbuckle your pants, loop the b-buckle (through the nearest belt loops),snap and then go!. That's it!!

Sizes run small (0-4), medium (6-8), and large (10-12). I tried the large, and it works for now! But since I am a plus sized mama, and only have one pair of low rise jeans anyway, this isn't going to work much longer for me. However, getting to wear it in the early stages of my pregnancy was great. Stylish and funky, I am a big fan!!

Readers may recognize Jennifer Noonan's name. She created the sucessful NOM brand. Jennifer told me via email, "I created the b-buckle when I was designing maternity clothes for NOM! I noticed that lots of women wanted to keep wearing their non-maternity jeans and were actually using the ol' rubber band to keep them on. As a mom of 2 I wanted to slow down a bit, so I sold NOM to a great company--Bellydance Maternity. I love the b-buckles and am just doing this now, it gives me time to be with my boys and keep having fun making new styles and designs."

They also ship internationally (and celebs love this product)! To grab a b-buckle for yourself or a pregnant friend, go to www.mybbuckles.com.

Mommies With Style will receive free shipping with code: MWS.

Slurp and Burp - it goes around and comes in handy!

fieldday.jpgHere's a new one that is a boon for nursing moms. The Slurp and Burp! Its an ingenious little coverup and burpcloth all in one.

The design is simple - it looks similar to a pouch sling (but please, please, do not ever attempt to carry a baby in this, ok?!). The loop of fabric is made of half soft comfy cotton knit, and half woven burpcloth fabric. It folds up compactly and tucks easily into a diaper bag or purse.

Here's how it works: The stretchy part of the Slurp and Burp fabric loop offers just enough coverage to comfortably nurse your baby, without flashing the world. But here's the genius part. When you finish nursing on one side, you can put your baby to your shoulder, to the woven burp cloth section, and burp away. When you switch sides, shift/rotate the loop to the opposite shoulder and you will have coverage on the opposite side, as well as a fresh section of burp cloth. Afterwards, toss the Slurp and Burp in the wash.

So simple and smart - like all my favorite baby products. You cannot have too many of these tucked away in diaper bags, purses and the car. It will make public nursing much simpler, and is bound to be a go-to item. I just wish I'd had one when I was breastfeeding. I gave one to a new mommy neighbor to test and she reports that she is just waiting for my article to order some more. She never goes out without it!

Mommies with Style save $10 when you enter code MWS during paypal checkout. Or email Missy@slurpburp.com and mention this article. Offer expires 7/15.

A Traveler's Dream

You're bound to get stares, its inevitable. Whether its just coming out of the car, you're carrying the bag over your shoulder, or you're wheeling Junior through the shopping center, the Mia Moda Cielo is so different, stares are going to happen. And you're going to love them.

The Mia Moda Cielo is so different its worthy of the stares. The stroller is extremely lightweight--so light weight that my 3 year old was pushing my 1 year old around and around like it was a doll stroller--only taller and steadier. The look is different: we're not talking a classic umbrella or travel stroller look, the Cielo has a modern simplicity with a bit of futuristic, euro style to it. Missing is the safety bar in front of the child and the sides that stick out and keep them inside. Because of that, this stroller is strictly for toddlers and up (to 40 pounds). Rather than the classic lines of fabric and bars of most strollers, the Cielo is a series of flows--a padded seat, an oval push handle, a curved backboard; even the basket (which hangs from the back, not underneath) is round.

I know what you're thinking... isn't that the stroller that folds?! You got it. This stroller folds down 3 times, small enough to fit into a bag that's smaller than most of my luggage--and remember how lightweight it is? Easy enough to carry over your shoulder. Infact, when my stroller arrived I thought for certain something was missing. It was just too light and too small a box for a stroller. But I easily lifted it out of the box, and it was already in the included carry bag. A quick unzip, and Carson (yes, my 3 year old) and I assembled the stroller in less than 3 minutes. (True, the assembly pretty much includes just popping on the wheels.)

But back to the fold. The first time, getting it open, was a little bit of a challenge. Here I was, instructions in one hand, stroller next to me, trying to find the red button. Carson yelling at me and pointing all the while: "There it is Mommy! Let me press it!" To my response, "Shhh! Carson, I'm trying to figure this out!" Of course, once I realized my preschooler had figured it out himself, I rushed right through the opening. A few bends and folds and the stroller's up and sturdy. Then, press a different red button when you're done, a few folds and clicks, and you can zip it back into the bag.

Okay, you may have to do this a few times before its natural. The weekend after we recieved the stroller we took it with us on a roadtrip, sans instructions. And my husband and I scratched our heads trying to remember the exact way to open. But once we had it open, we were set, and each time it got easier and easier. (Honestly, so you don't look like a circus spectacle in the mall parking lot, practice about 5 times at home. After that, it will be like riding a bike.)

So it has this awesome fold, but will it fit in my car? Like I said before, its smaller than my regular luggage. It fits snuggly behind the 3rd row in my Pilot, and, yes, it will probably fit in your sedan trunk, as it fits in our Accord trunk nicely. Not sure if I could comfortably fit it in with a set of golfclubs (if you really need me to try, let me know), but it will definitely help you when you need space for your bags and bags of purchases after a hot day of shopping.

Finally, is it comfortable? The boys say "yes." The turning radius is tiny--I'm talking 360s like a Bug, so there is literally no tilting on the axle--important without the sides to snuggle the kids in. Both boys love riding in it and sit easily with and without straps on. My biggest concern was sleeping--it has a recline but would he roll out? While I wouldn't bring it with me for a naptime party and let my roller sleep for several hours, a nap during a quick stroll is certainly doable.

Truly this stroller is a dream for any traveler. It stows under the plane (no, it won't fit in the area above your head or under the seat infront of you) and fits into most trunks. And, once you're good at it, the stroller can collapse and fold in less than 5 seconds. While a shorty like me may find the push bar a bit high, and a coffee aficionado may miss the cup holder, the luxuries included in the ease of Mia Moda's Cielo will probably out-rank a few short-comings. (it has a great one-handed push--hold you're own coffee!),

The winner of the 2007 JPMA Innovation Award, we found the Mia Moda Cielo on sale for $134.99 with Free Shipping.

Swim Safely, and Stylishly, with Your Kids This Summer

Several months ago when Wesley and I started Mommy-n-Me swim class, I was stumped. My figure had changed a lot and my old one-pieces weren't too appealing on my body. Additionally, after a recent trip to Mexico, I had invested quite a lot into sexy bikinis... sexy bikinis that were too sexy for Wes to grab onto in the therapy pool. Thus began a new search, this time one for an exersize swim suit--and one that looked appealing.

Of course, I first approached the big names. And, really, almost settled for them. But then I stumbled upon swimoutlet.com, and amongst the well-known suits in their line-up, they also sported an unfamiliar line, ClubSwim.

What first drew my attention to ClubSwim was the fun patterns on their sensible fabrics. Sure, they have plenty of solids, but they also have florals and camos--in many colors. Next, I noticed the variety of styles. I wouldn't be stuck with a one piece at Mommy and Me, I could choose from a few cuts of 2-pieces, too.

Now that I've been wearing the ClubSwim suits, my TYR and Speedo's are taking a back seat. ClubSwim's suits look good and feel good. I love the lack of underwire (which is just not conducive to a comfortable swim lesson or workout). And they hug in the right places and compliment many figures.

As for an almost 2 year old pulling this one off? No way. They're secure, as they are made for exercise and competition. They go on as a tank or sports bra--no ties or snaps of any sort. And they fit snug, so there is nothing for those little hands to grab a little too much.

I know you'll love the prices. For the amount I usually pay for a sexy little 2 piece, I could buy several ClubSwim suits. Several. They're currently discounted at SwimOutlet. Plus, free shipping with a $75 purchas. And I have to mention that SwimOutlet has fantastic Customer Service. Remember the bigger name suits I had? Well, I still had the tags on most, and I called after the return authorization date to sweetly request an extention. There was no problem--they were happy to accept my return. (And they didn't know I was working on a review).

Think a great price and great customer service, in addition to a great new suit isn't enough? We've got you covered... or at least covered enough in the pool with your kids! Beginning June 29, ClubSwim is sponsoring a Mommies with Style contest. There will be 10 lucky winners of their own choice of ClubSwim suits! So check back later in the week for more details.

I know a few moms nervous about giving in to their husbands' wishes and donning a bikini--a ClubSwim bikini like the one featured here just might make everyone happy.

The baby carrier with all of the answers!

BabyKtan.jpgSince having my son four weeks ago, I have been testing out all sorts of new products on him! I was very excited when I came across a very unique and stylish baby carrier that can be worn in five different ways and is a cross between a sling and a more structured front baby carrier. It doesn’t have buckles, rings, clasps, snaps, metal, plastic, bulky padding or wrapping involved. In fact, it is recommended by chiropractors, physical and occupational therapists alike. To top it off, your husband actually won’t mind wearing it! What type of carrier could possibly accomplish all of this? The answer is the Baby K’tan (which means “Little Baby” in Hebrew) Baby Carrier.

The Baby K’tan Baby Carrier has a double loop design with a unique sliding lumbar support band that distributes your child’s weight evenly and gives you greater back and shoulder support. The carrier is 100% cotton (super soft), machine washable and dryer safe. It is easy to use and allows you to comfortably and stylishly carry your baby or toddler up to 40lbs. The two loops can be arranged in the “Cradle”, “Explore”, “Adventure”, “Hug” and “Hip” positions. It is available in seven different colors and prints (White, Cocoa, Heather Gray, Black, Nautical Blue, Camo and Tie Dye Blue). It even includes a matching baby hat and sash! You can add personalized embroidery to your Baby K’tan to make it uniquely your own or have it monogrammed to make a special gift even more personal.

My son loves to be held which presents a problem for me in getting anything done around the house, so I decided to try out the “cradle” position, which holds him securely against me. He is snug as a bug and seems very content.

Instructions are included, so don’t worry if you think you won’t be able to figure out all five positions! You’ll be styling in no time while your child sees the world.

Ned is your Friend

print-hero-large.jpgThey say that art is good for the soul. Like a big hug.

If this is the case, then that must explain my urge to embrace Neds from Ned Design.

What is a Ned? According to artist Susie Lubell, "Neds are people you know. Neds are childish but sophisticated.
Neds are punchy and whimsical. Neds come in girl and boy varieties. Neds almost always have three fingers on each hand. Some Neds are four-fingered."

With their bright saturated colors and distinctive playful spirits, Neds are strangely recognizable and uniquely endearing characters. They are available as original art pieces, art prints, note cards and journals. If you are looking for a unique and happy wall decoration for your child, shop no more! Susie can even make a custom Ned for you, just ask!

I'd love to see a stuffed line of Ned's in the future. Because as my daughter exclaimed, "Aw! They're so cute, I want to squueze them!"

Tessy & Tab reading club: books in the mail

My son just adores getting his own mail. And if you guys were reading last week, you saw that we subscribe to High Five magazine (Highlights for under-5 years old), which he adores. So he was also excited when a mailing came from Tessy & Tab's Reading Club. It's a thin book geared towards children between ages 2-5. It comes twice a month and it's promotes learning how to read. The stories are simple, the words big. The pictures are colorful and it's easy for the kids to "read" the story via the pictures if they can't get the words.

I already have him recognizing some words in the Tessy & Tab books and able to "read" them when we come across them. Plus, I just think the concept's fun - the idea of getting a new book twice a month to learn to read on seems fun to me.

Mommies with Style readers will receive 3 free issues with their first issue. Enter MWS-3FREE as the coupon at checkout. It's $48 for the year, or $2 an issue. This is a great grandparent gift.

By they way, be sure to check out their "Just for Fun" section on the website, they have some fantastic teaching games.

Young Scientists Club: making it easy to teach your kids

I'm scientifically challenged. It's truly a wonder I ever got through high school chemistry. I think the teacher only passed me out of pity. And the same goes for math. So I often wonder what I'll do when the days come that my boys come home with questions that I can't answer.

That said, it's nice when I find something like the Young Scientists Club that helps me teach my kids and inspire them in ways I may not be able to (not without help, anyway!). You can engage your kids and give them an early start with some scientific curiosity by using the kits from the Young Scientists Club.

The Kits are for ages 4-12, which is definitely a wide age range so with younger kids you obviously need to supervise. We tried two kits (my son is 3.5), but the one we had the best time with was the Magnets. And he had a blast: various magnets are marked N and S for the opposite sides. We played with what happens when you put two Ns together, two Ss, and then what happens when you put an N and an S together. It encouraged me to teach him about magnets, how they repell and how they come together. We also taped a magnet to the top of a car (a car toy came with the kit) and then used another magnet to push it along. He loved it! He even proudly showed (and explained) it to my husband later that night.

You order this product as if it's a magazine subscription - either once or twice a month, and you can cancel at any time. You basically get charged each month when a kit ships to you. Or you can opt to prepay and you get free kits when you do so. (The details are on the How to Order page. You can see the list of kits here.)

Use coupon code MWS0607 and you'll receive a free sand dollar with fact card, and a pencil pouch full of several gifts including a magnifying glass, memo pad, pencil and ruler.

Rolling in Dough

I am a control freak of unimaginable proportions. For example, I have a strict, no-color-mixing rule when it comes to play dough. So staunchly do I enforce this rule, that when my kids play at other kids’ houses, and they mix colors, they are wholly astounded … it blows their mind. But despite my army-general-like tendencies, my kids still love playing with play dough. It’s one thing that keeps all three of my kids happily occupied, and one thing that always tempts me to stop and play along.

marys-dough.jpg Mary’s Soft Dough, made by Terrapin Toys is ultra soft non-crumbly and, when stored property, lasts up to a year without drying out!

The soft dough comes in a ton of great colors, (including my daughter’s favorite: glittery colors, as well as glow-in-the-dark colors) and smell great. Now, I must admit, I was skeptical about the good-smelling dough … after all, isn’t this an irresistible invitation to EAT the play things? However, My kids loved the smells, and not one of them tried to eat it (however if you have more orally fixated little ones, you may want to steer clear, though the substance is non-toxic). The soft dough comes in standard four-ounce tubs or giant, rainbow-or solid-colored tubs.

A burp cloth made for Moms

Here's a product with a great concept designed for both Moms and baby. The Handy Burpee was created by a Mom with sensitive skin. Her hands were chapping and bleeding and she had "winter skin" basically year round with her babies. It turned out she was allergic to preservatives found in so many products we use as Moms - soaps, wipes, etc.

She invented the Handy Burpee to protect her skin. It basically provides a pocket for Mom's hand while you are feeding and burping your infant, preventing any spit up or drool from actually getting on her hands (less washing needed after a feeding!)

Plus it's a handy little tool for any Mom as it serves as a regular burp cloth does too. Use coupon code PREGGIE to receive 15% off your order. She's currently offering free priority shipping on orders over $30.

Staying clean at the park: the Swing Scarf

Here's one I hadn't seen before, the Swing Scarf.

The Mom-inventor of the Swing Scarf took her daughter to the park for the first time one day - and her daughter immediately put her mouth to the edge of the toddler swing. Of course anyone who's been to a public park (and unless you are a hermit or your kids don't go outside, I'm going to say that's pretty much everyone) knows that the state of some of those swings couldn't be exactly deemed "clean." Spit up, bird poop, leaks from the last kid's diaper, snot -- there's a whole mess of fun and disgusting materials that can be found in a public park in a swing.

So enter the Swing Scarf. It's an incredibly simple design - two holes for their feet, and it ties on either side as a scarf would. Even better, it rolls up tightly and tucks away very nicely in a diaper bag. It's not padded just for that reason - easy and compact packing. But the fabric's thick enough that it does it's job and your child will be touching something you've washed, not something they are sharing with dozens of other kids.

Check out the Swing Scarf and order today. (Click on "fabrics" to order.) It makes a great gift too - it comes packaged in a clear cellophane bag and wrapped in tulle ribbon.

Mommies with Style are privy to a special promo until June 25th - normally $28.00 each, she's offering 20% off until the date of expiration. Order by June 25th to take advantage of the discount. Place the scarf in your shopping cart to see the discount.

The Ultimate Crash Pad for Families

It's a slide! It's a plane! It's a spaceship! No wait, it's a sofa. Or a chair. Except when you are tired, when it is a nap nest, nestled high in the imaginary treetops. And this is just the beginning. Because with a Sumo Lounge Omni, the possibilities are endless.

IMG_3380.JPG
So what is a Sumo Lounge Omni? Really it's just a big (very generous - 4 5' x 5 5'!) ballistic nylon pillowcase filled with polystyrene balls. AKA - a "bean" bag. But these are not to be confused with the bean bags of our youth as they are light years ahead.

For starters there is the filling. The little polystyrene balls that fill the Sumo allow you to bend and mold this big pad into myriad shapes. Fold it in half to make a couch. Stand it on end to fashion a chair. You can control the amount of fill for a firmer or softer pad, and inexpensive refills are available from Sumo, should you wish to eventually refill your lounger. Despite its dimensions, it takes up less space than you'd expect and weighs next to nothing - only 18 lbs. So it's a sofa you can actually sling over your shoulder and carry down the block to a pal's house. No problem!

And then there is the ballistic nylon coating. A parent's dream come true. Would you have brought your old beanbags out on the lawn? Or to the park? Probably not. But with the silkily smooth ballistic nylon exterior, stains are a nonexistant worry. We really tested this theory, allowing our kids to sit on their Omni lounge at the school talent show, held one recent friday night on the elementary school field.

sumopic.jpg The lounge caused quite a stir! And much jealousy and curiousity. At least six kids piled on, with snacks, drinks and dirt and grass covered bare feet. I tried not to cringe - telling myself that if this seating is popular in frat houses, it really ought to stand up to the neighborhood gang! And stand up it did. I'm pleased to report that our lounger was as good as new after a couple of quick swipes with a damp sponge.

So I am pretty much convinced that every family who can find a corner to squish this in, really needs one of these things. It's so fabulously popular in our house, that even though our test model arrived in a neon orange, it still has pride of place in our tastefully decorated chocolate and blue family room. Note: there are a wide variety of less psychedelic colors to choose from - but feel free to get an attention getting orange one too!

We're looking forward to bringing Sumo Omni lounges to the beach this summer. And I can see us sitting on them at the community outdoor movies, while watching 4th of July fireworks, and while entertaining friends both indoors and outside. It's a great spot for my two yr old son to nap when I visit my parents, and seats an adult and a child comfortably for cuddle time. My oldest considers it her personal gaming pad for Ms. Pacman sessions and my 7 yr old daughter turns it into a horse that she rides through imaginary forests. My husband, when lucky enough to secure it for his own personal use, can be found snoring there with a book on his face. He's stopped trying to figure out how to rig a hammock in the yard.

Here's the best news of all. Sumo Lounge Omnis are currently on sale! At $129 with free shipping, it's a buy you will be sure not to regret. If you have a minute to watch this cute video, you'll get some more ideas of ways to play with your lounger. And the box too!
