Giving him a safe boost

I didn't know I'd need it, but this past spring I realized a real need for a booster in my car. We needed a seat for carpools and playdates... and just an extra, lightweight, easy to transport seat.

I tried and tested. Borrowed and browsed. I didn't like too much of what I saw. Pretty quickly I narrowed down my wants by eliminating all that weren't highback. My little guy is still little enough that he didn't just need a booster, this kid requires a boost. I also feel he's a bit more coddled in there, a bit more protected with a seatbelt that's more secure. Plus, he's a sleeper, and the back area of a high-back booster gives him a bit less space to roam in his sleep than the width of a regular seat in a car.

While stumbling through test after test, I found a lot of seats made it difficult for my little guy to get the belt into the buckle. Heck, even I had trouble manuevering several of the latches around the hard, plastic seat that was wider than my Honda Pilot's chair.

It wasn't until I tried the Compass Folidng Booster Seat by The Learning Curve that I found one I felt comfortable putting my precious cargo inside. The seat is safe and provides and added cushion for comfort and protection (with "energy-absorbing EPS headrests with side wings provide improved impact protection"). Its base is wide enough to fit securely in the seat, yet narrow enough to allow room for our hands to buckle into a low-laying buckle. (We use this seat in the 3rd row.) It also happens to be compact. The unique fold allows for it to be stored away when not in use--and not taking up a ton of room. The fold is actually tight enough that it fits on a taller shelf with several other items (imagine doing that with a carseat!) The high back extends pretty high--up to 30 inches with 6 positions, all the while securing the shoulder strap at the correct height for safe riding.

And, to my booster-sitter's chagrin it has folding arm rests and cupholders on both sides that hide when not in use. Not to mention the way-cool giraffe print!

Its no wonder the Compass Deluxe Folding Booster Car Seat has won several awards, and received a 5-star rating by the NHTSA and the US Department of Transportation.

Did someone say... FREE?

Honestly, I don't care what it is. Because if someone says "free" I'm there.

And this time, Fisher Price said it. In an e-mail. Free. The F-word. So what if its a commercialized video that's not as hunky dory, lovey dovey as our usual weekday morning distractions? Its F-R-E-E.

Planet Heroes totally fits the the 4-year-old mindset. Filled with space travel, aliens and super-heroes, you can view all three videos, or, for those with less free time, the associated trailers. Following viewing, register and order your copies (one each for your household).

Delivery time is 12-16 weeks, so this is holiday giftable. Oh, and did I mention... its FREE?

Milo and Gabby Cozy Companions Head Off Homesickness

miloandgabby.jpgTravel can be scary for little people. Having a fuzzy pal along for the ride can make all the difference in the world.
Milo and Gabby Cozy Companions are the perfect size and shape pillow/stuffed animal hybrid to take to Grandma's on a car trip or really anywhere you travel.

The plush characters feature purselike handles to make toting simple. They unzip to facilitate cleaning and double as a perfect place to stash pj's and a toothbrush for a sleepover.

My 8 and 11 year old daughters had a wicked fight over who got to have the Milo and Gabby dog pillow I brought home from a recent event. They both wanted to keep it! I can see an additional pillow purchase in my future now. This item would make a very thoughtful slumber party or travel gift for a kid. Purchase your own at BunnyChicBoutique.

Valco Baby's Latitude for Two Twin Stroller: Find your way to this Double Stroller!

G_valcobaby_lat8862 If you are looking for a lightweight double stroller that has many bells and whistles, then you are going to LOVE Valco Baby's Latitude for Two Twin Stroller ($480).This side by side double is a winner because of the terrific suspension, full coverage sunshade, quick recline, huge storage basket, compact fold (reverse book fold) and adjustable handlebar. This was one of the first side by side strollers that I didn't have a problem going through doorways with. And yes, it fits my car!

Click Continue Reading for the rest of the review & a 5% discount from Let's Go Strolling!

Putting it Together:

After the initial unfold, I used the clearly written directions to put it together. The wheels went on very easily. The bumper bar and the canopy were a little harder to put together. In my opinion, the bumper bar, even though it was a nice touch, wasn't even necessary for this stroller. My son just liked putting his legs over it (even though he wasn't supposed to). The double hood lines up and slides on very easily.

The Ride:

Img_2725 The smooth ride of the Latitude for Two really impressed me, especially because it has plastic wheels! Which I actually started to love -- I couldn't believe how well they handled. This stroller is so lightweight and the push was so easy! The one handed steer and adjustable handlebar are fantastic (tall parents are going to be thrilled). The foot brake was very easy to manuever (just push down on the center of the brake lever to engage and lift up with your foot to disengage). Bumps and cracked sidewalks were not a problem at all.

The Seats:

Img_2719 The five-point harnesses were easily adjustable. The buckle prongs for the harness fit together and then go into the buckle. While it is simple to put together, I found them harder to disengage (you have to push down very, VERY firmly on the buckle prongs while you release the buckle). The seats were narrow, but my almost 3 year old fit perfectly. His legs seemed a little long for the length, but he was very comfortable in the seats. He also had room to grow on top. The flat recline was often utiltilized by the baby (my toddler never sleeps in a stroller). The softly padded seats, with the extended leg rests, were very comfortable for both of my children. Recline the seats by squeezing the center release (on the back part of the seat) and then ease the seat back.

Storage:

7769687f4b The underbaskets were large and held a lot - I was able to go food shopping and store my purchases quite easily. You will have to clip your diaper bag to to the foam handlebar. I missed having a cupholder, so I plan to attach my Valco Cup holder.

Sun Exposure:

Img_2723 Something that is always important to me is sun protection and the Latitude for Two delivered! I was really pleased that the hoods also tilted forward to provide even more protection. I also liked the "peekaboo" window on top of the hoods.

The Fold:

This is an extremely compact, reverse book fold. To fold, press the center locking button (that usually adjusts the handlebar height), and then turn the secondary Img_2741 release lock counter clockwise and hold it into the open position-- its on the right side (you'll see it at the bottom of a handlebar). Adjust the handle downward as far it will go until it firmly presses down on the spring frame release mechanism. As you feel the frame release, press down on the handle and the frame will fold "backward". It was tough at first to fold this stroller, but once I learned how to do it correctly, it was much easier! To lock the stroller, manually take the locking straps over the frame, placing the metal catch over the rivet head. To store it in my car, I have to make sure my trunk is empty, load the stroller in, and then put my bags around it.

The stroller includes a rain cover, a boot cover, a front bumper bar, and adjustable handle.

Accessories available are car seat adapter (compatible with Graco Snugride, Peg Perego, Maxi Cosi Mico, and Britax Companion), the Four Seasons Footmuff, the Hitch Hiker (ride on board) and Universal Cupholder.

Final Verdict: This is one of my favorite double strollers and I can't believe how many features you get for such a lightweight ride!

I know what you are are thinking. A review on hand-knit hats and mittens in July? Yes, ladies, yes. Why? Well, first of all, the best fall and winter clothing is coming out in stores now. I am so excited to tell you about them that I didn't want to wait until it got colder!

Zooni celebrates childhood, and in doing so, has created an amazing product line of fun, unique, comfortable and soft hats and mittens. These are truly special. When I saw them initially online, I thought "these are cute!". But when I received it, tried it on my son, and was able to touch and feel the product, I then discovered how amazing, unique, and special these products really are.

These items are all handmade. Each piece is made of custom made yarns, and is lined with comfortable, warm, stretch fabric to keep your chld's head snug and toasty. The best part, though, about the Zooni items is how adorable and special they look on your child.

I tried the Puppy Love hat on my 1 year old son, Jonah. As a vibrant red-head, I hate to cover his head and miss out on his special hair. But when I put the Puppy Love hat on, it looked so adorable, and added to his funny and sweet personality. I was literally walking him around in that hat, showing anyone I could, in the middle of 90 degree weather in July! Let's just say that I am more than excited to bring this hat back out in the fall!

Each and every style is special and adorable: Puppy Love, Panda Monium, Chunkee Monkee, Leo the Lion, Flower Power, Purple Reign (heart) and more. Take a look for yourself and the cute options.

Best of all, the two sisters who started Zooni are committed to social responsibility, abiding by fair labor standards, using recycled packaging, and donating a portion of profits to charity.

Gotta Get a Gitta Bag

gittabag.JPGI've got a new favorite diaper/stroller bag. If you haven't heard of Gitta Bags, you've got to get with it!

It's rare to find a bag that is so practical and still fabulously funky. With so many cookie cutter/copycat designs out there, Gitta bags are refreshing. And they are more than up to the tough task of taking care of your kids stuff and cleaning up their messes.

I've been using the "108" printed edition. It's a satiny blue fabric with a pillowy soft cloud of color on the front. It coordinates with all of my strollers, which certainly makes me smile every day. But it is the awesome functionality of the bag that makes it my on the go bag of choice right now. The fabric of the Gitta Bag has a unique satinlike finish. It's slightly disco and very cool. Bonus points because it wipes clean in knowing wink.

When it comes to diaper bags you cannot have too many pouches, specialty compartments or accessories, can you? The Gitta 108 comes armed with a full contingent of storage solutions that make easy work of any incident on your outings. Here is a list of some of what this bag has going on under it's cute exterior:

* bottle, accessory and spare clothing zippered pouches
* waterproof compartment
* thermal insulated side compartments
* diaper/wipes case holders
* zip out changing station with removable changing pad
* multiple pockets for stashing all the other important stuff you need
* comfy backpack/messenger straps
* stroller straps
* key clip

Everywhere I go with this bag I get comments about how cute and fun it is. The fact that it is extraordinarily fun-ctional too? Frosting!

The diaper bag for dad.

When I had my son, my husband became abnormally concerned with what diaper bag I was choosing. His thinking - he might end up carrying it and didn’t want to be stuck with anything remotely girly. DadGear offers the perfect solution. Functional diaper bags for dads. Most importantly, they don’t look like a traditional diaper bag. They come in several different styles, Messenger, Courier, Sports Bag, Backpack and even a Diaper Vest.

dadgear.jpgNo matter the bag, DadGear bags come in great patterns – any dad would love. Check out their newly introduced new Graphics Diaper Bags. That comes in patterns like Razor Flames, Route 66, Classic Rock and others. Regardless of the style you choose, they are all very functional. One of the things that really adds to the functionality of DadGear bags are their "hands free" approach which allows you to change, feed, and entertain your child without having to put the bag down. Another cool feature is their quick access wipes panel under the front flap. The built-in wipes holder accommodates most brands of wipes. The bag is loaded with hidden pockets and great features for a stylish bag that is truly functional. You can check out all the bag's unique aspects on their on-line demo.

Out Today: The Terrible Twos Band: Jerzy the Giant

A new, fun, rockin'-in-our-car favorite this week, The Terrible Twos Band released Jerzy the Giant today. A mix of indie rock with classic, these fun songs get the kids dancing and singing. The boys' hands down favorite, Great Big Poop, is certainly not mine (though I do have to admit, that I love hearing the belly laughs as we listen to a whole song about the forbidden word). But I am enjoying hearing my favorites, like The Plan and Whispering the Melody.

Written and led by Matt Pryor, also of The New Amsterdams, Matt was inspired by his own kids antics and simply what they wanted to hear... or wanted to sing out. Preview and purchase the universally fun themes in this new CD at Amazon.

Weight Watchers Update: I've lost 20 lbs!!

Logo_weight_watchersI'm excited to announce that I've lost 20 pounds on Weight Watchers! I feel better and in control. While I'm not at my goal weight yet, I am on my way. I don't feel deprived, because I can still enjoy myself with foods I like (I just have to watch my portions). My husband and I recently went to Montreal and I was able to stay on plan. I enjoyed myself eating-wise, but I just made better choices. For example, on the first day we had sandwiches and french fries. The sandwich had turkey and lettuce (no cheese) and I had a small portion of the fries. This way I was able to fix that craving, but didn't eat enough to throw me off track. For desert later that night, I had a small chocolate gelato (before Weight Watchers I would have had a larger size and then yelled at myself). We walked everywhere (and pretty far), so I knew I was keeping active too.

Back at home, the biggest things that have helped me is keeping a food diary, eTools and meetings. Writing down everything I eat helps me to realize what kind of choices I've made and what works better for me. Trying to keep track of it in my head never works, I need to write it down!  Using eTools, I can also fill in my food diary online or find recipes. I actually find recipes for the week before I food shop. I eat the recommended portion and double the portion or (sometimes triple it) for my fit husband. Meetings are also essential for me. I need the accountability of stepping on that scale. I also love interacting with the other members, it's great to know that I am not the only one in the room struggling with my weight.

Check out Weight Watchers.com for more information.

When the Sh*t Hits the Van - Target to the Rescue!

Our family is currently planning for a road trip and gathering supplies. We'll be travelling in our brand new black Honda Odyssey van which we adore. Sadly, so do all the little birdies. It's as if they were waiting for us to get as large and as black a vehicle as possible, so they could do their thing. Usually on the way home from the carwash.

Much as I adored the 101 Dalmations series I'd rather not drive around in a vehicle that looks like it should be chasing a firetruck. Which is why I was overjoyed to find the Red Hot Shop at Target, filled with road trip supplies for the month of July.

While perusing the selection of limited time boutique items ( this months' theme has everything from cute Orla Kiely journals to retro cameras and game tins) I came across the Grumpy Girl Auto Bird Turd Emergency Removal Kit Ahem. Hallelujah!

What a stellar find! As if I did not have enough reasons to spend time in Target stores and perusing their site, it's finds like these road trip gems that have me writing less and shopping more. We're travelling to the Pacific Northwest on our vacation but we're sure to make a few Target pit stops along our route for whatever we've forgotten to pack. Lets start a Target tally now. How many Target stores will we drive by and how many of them will we stop in?

And how about you? How many Targets did you shop at during your last road trip?

Cloth Diapering 101: It All Comes Out in the Wash... Promise!

I suspect that many of you have been skimming the Cloth Diapering Series this past week, thinking to yourself "Sure those diapers look cute going on, but once they are soiled... I never want to see them again!". No need to fess up. But do the planet and your budget a favor and if you are going to read any of the articles in the cloth diapering series, read this one!

Washing cloth diapers is probably the #1 reason that people hesitate to cloth diaper.

It's understandable. It's a potentially icky job, and anyone who has donned hazmat attire and thrown away an outfit post baby blowout or been reduced to near tears by the state of a carseat cover after a sudden flood, is probably scarred from the experience. We're all a little squeamish about coming into contact with human waste so it's no wonder why disposables have always been so alluring. But lets get something straight here:

You do not need to touch, scrub, soak or come into objectionable contact with feces covered diapers if you choose to cloth diaper!

This is because presoaking is not necessary, and your diapers will be stored in a bag that goes right into the washing machine along with the diapers. The closest you will come to touching a soiled diaper, will be during the time when you remove it from the child, and spray it off/toss into the diaper pail. The changing experience is really not any more traumatic/difficult than with a disposible.

Now you are probably thinking, "What about the smell?" But here's the next pleasant revelation:
Cloth diapers stink less than disposibles!

It's shocking but true. Two reasons why. First, we tend to let our diaper genies and diaper champs etc get fuller before emptying. So three to four days worth of diapers sit in there. Second, all that plastic designed to contain the stink, is actually conducive to the growth of that stinky bacteria. It likes to live in an airtight environment. It thrives there. Cloth diaper containers are rarely airtight. Cloth diapers are ideally washed every day to two days. Frequent enough that odor does not have a chance to really build up. Also since the container is always washed with the diapers, there is no lingering odor left behind. Furthermore, you can use environmentally friendly, beneficial bacteria and enzyme based sprays on your diapers (after removing) that begin to break down any stains and odors before you even put them in wash. These can be sprayed on the diaper as it is tossed into the wetbag. Reliable brands are Bum Genius Odor Remover and Bac Out Stain and Odor Remover.

So how does one go about washing the diaper? Bleach? chemicals? Presoaks?

All of these questions sprang to my mind when I was considering cloth. I still remembered my moms tales of boiling diapers with bleach to sterilize them. But the fact of that matter is that with today's extremely efficient washing machines, there is no need to presoak or scrub diapers by hand. And the last thing you need/want to do is use harsh chemicals on the garment next to your baby's skin. In fact you will want to use an extremely mild (hopefullly organic) soap on the diapers, and wash with the bare minimum amount to get them clean. Excess detergent, softener, and fragrance can build up on your diapers which will make them perform less well. So let your washing machine do the work and keep the products to a minimum.

Here is our routine:

Before bed my husband or I tosses the days diapers into the wash and do a dedicated load of diaper laundry. We select the machines hottest cycle (sani-cycle on our front loading Kenmore). We then add in a presoak/rinse cycle and a second rinse cycle, load the detergent of choice, and hit start.

In the morning we are greeted with sparking clean diapers, and throw them in the dryer. Total diaper care time spent is about one third the amount of time it would take to reload the diaper genie and take the offensive diaper sausage to the trash on the side of the house. And it is 100% less gross of a job!

Are you wondering, "What about your washer, does it have the cooties?"

The answer is no! Seriously people! Washing machines are very good at cleaning themselves as well as the sheets, towels and even soiled diapers we stuff into them. There is no poo residue, no smell, nothing but clean fresh laundry in the morning The multiple rinse cycles (which use very little water but work a charm!) are extremely effective of ridding all things objectionable. But if it makes you feel better, run a bleach cycle with some old towels every now and then.

It's actually rather anti climactic talking about washing the diapers. The drama I expected is entirely absent. So rather than dwell on it further, I will list for you my favorite three diaper laundry detergents and refer you to this handy detergent chart that takes into account water in your area. You should also check out this entirely reassuring photo tutorial on washing cloth diapers.

Of the detergents I tried, my favorite is Allens Naturally. It's miraculous. We bought a gallon and a squirt pump that measure the proper amount for us. Our washer only needs three pumps to get a load perfectly clean. I will be using the gallon for a very long time.

Also effective at diaper and baby wash and especially good for those with super sensitive skin, are Maggies Soap Nuts.

If you don't have specialty stores nearby and want to use something more commonly found in stores, I recommend Seventh Generation laundry detergent products. These are also extremely gentle and effective at cleaning.

I hope that this series has given some of you the inspiration to give cloth diapering a try, even part time. Every disposible diaper you do not use, is a significant contribution to the wellness of our planet. What better present could you give your child than more careful stewardship of the world they will inherit? Other benefits include fewer diaper rashes, and of course the myriad of cute covers and custom diapers that you will want to indulge in once you try out cloth diapering. I wish you well on your journey!

Cloth Diapering 101: Extras and Advances

You've mastered the basics now. Are you ready to step off the ledge and leap into the world of cloth diapers? Want to make the experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible? Before you make the leap, I have a few more suggestions for you. The following accessories will make your experience all the more enjoyable.

First of all, if you have decided to give the flatfolds and prefolds a go, you will want to check out Snappis. These clever little rubber and plastic grippers keep a diaper on your squirmy tot without the use of a pointy pin. They are fun to use and come in a rainbow of colors almost like barrettes for your hair.

When you change what you use to diaper, you will probably want to change the way you do changes. Think about how you change a disposable diaper... you shove the wipe into the dirty dipe and throw away the whole thing, right? This habit is hard to break, but shove a disposable wipe into a cloth diaper and you may end up with a fuzzy linty laundry "issue". The solution? Switch to cloth washcloths. You're already washing diapers, so what if there is a washcloth in there too? Several diaper manufacturers, including Bum Genius make excellent cloths for bottom cleaning. Simple baby washcloths work equally well. But a dry washcloth probably won't do the job of cleaning baby's bottom very effectively. So you will need a way to moisten the cloth. My favorite products for this are the following sprays. Formulated with essential oils and baby safe ingredients, they smell wonderful and clean gently. These are a must have for any mom - cloth diapering on not. They also work as a great booster with disposible wipes when you have a sticky mess to clean.

Kissaluvs diaper lotion potion - available premixed or in a concentrated refill version that you mix up at home.

Bum Genius Bottom Cleaner Spray The name says it all! This one has a slight vanilla scent and works wonderfully.

Another solution for cloth diaper compatible wiping, is to use a wipes warmer with pre moistened washclothes. Check the Diaper Pin forums for recipes for making your own wipes solution to use in a wipes warmer.

Changing the diaper on a breast fed baby is very easy because the mess is mostly liquid. There is no need to presoak a diaper. But when baby begins to eat solids, the mess is a little... messier. What to do? Two products help make this mess a little easier to deal with.

Diaper liners are a flushable paperlike lining that keeps solids from adhering to the inside of your diaper. Similar, though not flushable, fleece liners let moisture pass through and trap solids on a non staining, nonstick layer that can be shaken out into the toilet.

For diapers that need a little more attention before going into the laundry, the Bum Genius Sprayer is a lifesaver. This device attaches right onto your toilet, allowing you to spray the solids off the diaper into the potty before you toss the diaper into the diaper pail. It's a totally useful accessory for any parent to have. Perfect for rinsing the "little potty" when potty training, cleaning mess off the soles of shoes and many more fun parenting tasks. Trust me, you need this!

One the diapers are removed and solid waste is flushed, you have to put them someplace till you wash them. I wish I had specific diaper pail recommendation but the fact of the matter is that with cloth diapers you don't need an expensive diaper pail. Nor do you need an air tight one. Any cheap trash can with a lid from Target or a similar store will do. Because you will be washing every day to every other day you will be amazed by how little the diapers smell. Particularly when you use a good diaper pail liner. These amazing waterproof liners are the key to containing mess and odor and go into the wash right along with the diapers. They make it possible for you to wash the diapers without even coming into contact with them. Which is a beautiful thing. We're in love with our diaper pail liner from Fuzzi Buns. If you are starting out cloth diapering, you should purchase a couple of these!

When you are on the road you will need a similar laundry bag. For some reason, the miniature version is commonly referred to as a wet bag. It works just like a diaper pail liner but fits inside your diaper bag. Toss your dirtys into the wetbeg and then turn the whole thing out into the wash when you get home. Our favorite wet bags are the adorable ones from Wet Happened. These bags zip shut, ensuring that there are no leaks or accidents with the messy items on the way home.

One other topic is the source of great debate in cloth diapering. Snaps vs Velcro. Once again I don't have an answer for you and this is something you will need to expiriment with to find your own comfort zone. Some people prefer the versatility of velcro. Others prefer the way snaps wash. I've had great success with both but will say that I prefer snaps persoanally as there is less prep work prior to washing. If you are using a diaper with velcro you will have to fold the tabs down into laundry position prior to washing (usually as you take the diaper off of the baby). Most velcro diapers have an extra square of female looping sewn beneath the tab, allowing them to be folded down/fastened prior to washing in order to prevent what is called a "laundry snake". This is when everything in the wash gets stuck together.

Finally, I wanted to share a diaper system with you that does not really fit into any of the previously discussed categories, but worth including. The "hybrid" diaper by G-diapers. These diapers are similar to cloth systems as they involve a cover and insert. But in the case of G-diapers, the inserts can be flushed, minimizing both the amount of laundry you do and the impact on the environment. The catch is that the inserts must be torn in half and then stirred into the potty (with a special included stick) prior to flushing. It's not for everyone, but its a very convenient option for many.

Stay tuned tomorrow when I give you the 411 on doing the wash!

Spot On Style at Spotted Dog Jewelry Design

The following was written by Mommies with Style reader & guest writer Anne:

I have been in a bit of an accessory slump lately. While I do have some great pieces, more and more often I have been getting a very blah vibe when I go to put something on. The dark cloud hanging over my jewelry box lifted when I got some pieces from Spotted Dog Jewelry Design.

With a keen eye for color and proportion, Spotted Dog creates pieces that stand out in a crowd, From semi-precious to vintage Lucite, the materials used in their creations have a balance of elegance and whimsy. One of my favorites is the Raspberry Moonglow and Turquoise Knot Double Strand Necklace, which is such and fun, bold piece.

Spotted Dog has also designed an “Accessorize For The Cure” piece that is simply stunning. This 3 strand freshwater coin pearl necklace with sterling accents will not only turn heads, 30% of all sales will be donated to the Lymphoma Research Foundation.

Add some fun to your jewelry box with Spotted Dog Jewelry Design, Be sure and check out the earrings as well as the fun cuff bracelets, too. The new Vintage “Re-Mix” Collection has unique pieces to fit in any wardrobe and budget.

Fit & Fresh Smart Portion Chill Containers & More

P77955bSince I've been on Weight Watchers for the last 7 weeks, I've been trying to watch my portions. Fit & Fresh has really helped me with that. I love their Smart Portions line -- choose from a 4 pack of 1 cup containers ($9.99), a 4 pack of 2 cup containers ($9.99) or a 2 pack of their 2 cup containers ($5.99). Features include measurement markings on the side, removable ice packs which clip to the underside of the lid to keep food fresh and chilled, and lids that are tabbed on two sides). All Fit & Fresh products are easy to clean, freezer, microwave and top rack dishwasher safe (except for the ice packs). Do not microwave the ice packs. Now, when I go out for the day (or even if I portion out my food in the refrigerator), I know exactly what I am eating. I can fit them into the little cooler I take out with my kids daily. I even use it around the house while I am cooking to quickly measure out ingredients. Last night I used the 1 cup container to portion out my pasta serving.

I also love their Salad Shaker ($9.99). I eat a lot of salads, but don't usually take them when I go out P59709bbecause packing the dressing is usually such a problem. This container lets you take a salad AND has a dressing dispenser (so you don't have a soggy salad!). When you're ready to eat, just twist and shake. You can take your own utensils or a snack in the top storage compartment. This makes it much easier for me to pack a salad (I also like that I can portion out my dressing).

Another product that I also tested is their Food Scale ($11.99). It also helps me to portion out food in my home. The food tray is removable and dishwasher safe. You can get the measurements in grams or ounces (and this food scale easily fits in the cabinet, when you aren't using it).

Another Fit & Fresh product that is getting a lot of buzz is their LivePURE Filtered Water Bottle ($12.99). Holding 20 ounces of water, this water bottle filters water on the way out (so you can fill up from a water fountain and enjoy clean, filtered water on the go). It offers anti-microbial protection and is a great, green alternative to bottled water.

He wears his shades Morning, Noon and Night

I wear my shades nearly 24/7. They're my most-used accessory, and then some. If they aren't on my eyes (years ago I had eye surgery, so shades are more than a for-fun accessory), then they're on my head, as a headband. In fact, if shades don't hold my hair back, then they fail my wearability test.

But enough about me. Perhaps its the influence of doing what Mommy does. But ever since my 4-year-old picked up his newest pair of My First Shades (in a bigger size! and a fantasticly easy-to-manipulate carrying case, they've been on his head. He really does "wear [his] sungalsses at night."

My First Shades have been a fantastic addition to our summer necessities. Due to my sensitive eyes, sun protection is important to me and apparently to my 2 year old who yells "the sun is too hot!" whenever its too bright in his eyes. He was in major need of a sungalsses--but sunglasses that were comfortable and stayed on his head were major factors. Then, when he fell and needed stitches on his eyelid, we realized that only My First Shades, with their 100% UV Protection and snug fit over the eyes were going to work to protect not only his eye, but his scar (poor thing).

Then there's the 4 year old, the one who truly wears them at night. For him, its an accessory. Sure, they work on his eyes, but how cool is he to wear his shades wrapped around the head day in and out? Bring back the sweatband style of the 70s, baby, because Carson is SO already there with his shades. (Which apparently, make his room even darker at night, when they are actually on his eyes.)

My First Shades are available in 3 sizes for children--infant (0-36 months) and child (3-7 years) and Tween (ages 12+). They're adjustable with velcro on the elastic wrap, so they'll fit nicely for several years. You can select cute and colorful fabric elastics, or your (child's) favorite team as well as a few different styles. Use coupon code style for 10% off through August 31, 2008.

Cloth Diapering 101: All in Ones and Covers

Now that you understand the difference between flatfolds, prefolds and fitted diapers, and you know how a Pocket Diaper works, it's time to take a look at the All-in-one diapers.

Not a lot of companies make All in Ones and frankly not a lot of cloth diapering parents are fond of them. If you ask me, this is not entirely deserved and All in Ones get a bum (sorry!) rap. All in One diapers can really simplify your changing routine and are a good thing to have on hand for when grandma or a sitter is watching the baby. There is nothing to stuff, nothing to pin or fasten beneath a cover. Just a diaper. They are also handy to have along for a quick change away from home.

The most common criticism All in Ones (commonly referred to as AIOs) receive is that they are difficult to properly wash and take forever to dry. The many layers are bulky and don't fare as well in your machine. To which I respond, it depends on the AIO!

I've found Blueberry's All in Ones to perform beautifully. They wash out easily and dry in the same amount of time as all my pocket and fitted diapers. This may be due to the clever construction of these diapers. They are made like pocket diapers with an opening in the back of the diaper lining, the only difference is that the insert is sewn in. This construction allows air to circulate and also provides you with the opportunity to stuff the diaper even more with extra inserts, if needed.

There are numerous WAHM moms who make and sell AIO diapers in every color of the rainbow, and often with a custom monogram or embroidered design. A good place to start your hunt for customized diapers (AIO or other) are the following sites:

The Diaper Pin

Etsy
Hyena Cart

Spend a few minutes searching for cloth diapers and you will be blown away with the possibilities.

And this brings me to my favorite part of cloth diapering. The covers!

Custom diaper covers may be what sucked me into this whole adventure. Sure there are many companies that make a good basic cover. Cotton Babies stocks a good selection. But how could I put a plain white cover on my baby when there were covers made of minky and sporting sock monkeys and too many other prints to mention, to choose from. Do you need a glamorous cover? No. But if you are going to do the laundry, I say, you deserve to have a little fun. Some favorites:

Once again I love the selection of covers at Blueberry Diapers. They do minky so well.

Another favorite custom made cover of ours are our Wiggle Worm Bottoms. Please note, there may be a waiting list to order custom made covers from this vendor.

In addition to PUL lined waterproof covers, you might want to consider woolen knit covers such as these amazingly adorable ones from Crankypants. There's a waiting list for them, but I'm quite sure it's worth it!

Stayed tuned till tomorrow when we will talk about cutting edge hybrid diapers, the virtue of snaps vs velcro and some of the many accessories used by cloth diaperers to make the experience an even more positive one.

And finally at the end of the week we'll talk about the #1 feared topic in cloth diapering. Washing!

Late July Media Round up

I've been a bit delinquent with the recent kids movie round up. Here's a few releases from the last month (or coming very shortly) which are worthwhile:

Fireman Sam: To the Rescue - my boys love this relatively new one (to the US); we watch bits of it on Sprout, so they were of course thrilled to have a DVD of it. It's $11.49 on Amazon.

Disney's Phineas & Ferb: the Fast and the Phineas - releasing next Tuesday, July 29th. Preorder it on Amazon for $13.99.

Disney's the Wizards of Waverly Place: Wizard School - also releasing next Tuesday, July 29th. The preorder price on Amazon is $14.99.

Barney: the Best of Barney - This one isn't coming out until September 9th but I got a couple notices about it, and if you (or your child) is a Barney fan at all, it's something to note. 20 years of Barney, all in one DVD. You can pre-order it on Amazon for $17.99.

Strawberry Shortcake: Rockaberry Roll - I had to mention this one because I loved Strawberry Shortcake as a kid. That, and my little sister (who was red-haired and freckled-face as a kid) went on a local talk show in Boston and won an award for being a Strawberry Shortcake look-a-like. (You knew I'd find a way to work that into this blog someday Ab!) Anyway, apparently Strawberry Shortcake is still around and entertaining millions of girls. Her latest is this DVD, which is releasing on August 12th. It has a great pre-order price, you can order it for 40% off listing, for $8.99 if you order it soon.
