The End of Summer Family Road Trip Part One - All Packed Up
We weren't actually planning to take a road trip this summer. We'd booked a house in coastal Oregon for a week of rest and relaxation, planning to fly our family of six to Portland and rent a car. But the cost of airfare and the lure of the road, as well as the chance to break in our new Honda Odyssey Minivan, led to a change of plans. Here is our adventure, including the places we went, the gear that saved us and the planning tips that helped us avoid common travel pitfalls!
Our journey began at 4am. "Captain Daddy" got a new Road Trip Hat (as is our family tradition). The car was well packed the day before. Packing for a family of six is no small endeavor. Fortunately we had some sound advice (pack for four to five days and do laundry!) and some specialized gear and equipment that made our jobs easier and our loads lighter:
Mountainsmith also makes a fabulous Cooler (with a fold out drink holder) that fits into the same container, interchanging with one of the bags. We used this in the main compartment of the car to keep our drinks and snacks cool. It fit perfectly between the front seats of our Oddysey minivan. Check out the Mountainsmith site for more modular systems perfect for organizing any travelers.
Inside the car we packed a weeks worth of games, puzzles, books and activities into Linda Hecht's “One Hecht of an Organizer”. This amazing and multipocketed blue bin had a space for everything from hand sanitizer and mini flashlights to crayons and more. Pockets galore! The long carrying straps made it easy to belt into place in the center seat (no shifting) and amazingly the kids kept everything in the case all week long, even when we stopped at the beach house. I’ll be using this bin for organizing my carpooling self when school starts. It comes with a handy file sorter (permission slips, grocery lists, work papers...) and suggestions on how to make it the perfect in car organizer for moms. More much needed suggestions for making your life less hectic and more organized can be found on the HechtofanOrganizer website.
Hitting the road at 4 am turned out to be a great idea. Our kids snoozed peacefully and we had some nice quiet adult time as we cruised through a traffic-less downtown LA. When does that ever happen? We watched the sun rise over the San Joaquin valley as we came down from the mountain passes. By breakfast time we made it to the Harris Ranch, one of our favorite places to stop when driving up the long stretch of 1-5 that makes up the central valley. Fortunately we also packed our kid's Pepto Bismol, as the rich and huge meal did not agree with everyone in the party! Little did we know how handy our Pepto was to become, later in the trip. By early afternoon we were in San Francisco and it was time to start testing some of the tech gear we brought along…
The summer's coming to an end but it doesn't mean we still can't shop for cute suits - those of you lucky enough to live somewhere warm year round will appreciate the look of these suits, as well as those of you with warm weather trips planned in the fall and winter.
Moms and girls especially will love the site as they can match two piece suits.

If you've been reading my reviews, you'll know that, like many, my kids have a thing for softness. And ja*lu's organic baby blankets offer softness and warmth, loved recently on our Northeastern Vacation. While traveling though New England, we were hit with temps reaching down to the 50s at night--and with no heat, we loved having a blanket for not only warmth, but a comfort of home.
ja*lu's contemporary finishing of the blankets offers an appealing look to many moms. Trim the natural-colored blanet with silky-feeling, softly designed fabrics that complement every baby. All blankets and gift sets by ja*lu come wrapped in a gift-able box, complete with a card. Making your life SO easy.
A great size for a baby gift, or later for warmth on a road trip, 20% off through Sept. 30th with redemption code STYLE20.
Petite Palate Gourmet Organic Baby Food: Add Some Spice to Your Baby's Meals
Enough of the bland, add some spice to your baby's meals with Petite Palate's Gourmet Organic Baby Food. We loved their Apple Pear Blend which contains apples and pears, with lime juice, cinnamon and vanilla. Much better than plain 'ole applesauce, this container was devoured by my seven month old daughter. She also adored the Banana Peach Blend, which is bananas, peaches and ginger. I was impressed how light this puree was -- usually any puree with bananas that I've given my child is so dense. The Puree of Garnet Yams was delish too, but it took my baby a couple of times to start enjoying it. It's made with yams, vegetable stock, parsley, bouquet garni (made of parsley and thyme), plus cinnamon and nutmeg. My toddler, who we call the "The Vegetable Avoider", actually gobbled all the Split Pea Stew, which contains split peas, vegetable stock, red potatoes, onions, carrots, olive oil, garlic, thyme, pepper, and oregano. The product comes in 4 oz paper containers and arrived perfectly frozen at my door.
Petite Palate was started by Lisa Beels, a graduate of Cordon Bleu in London and Christine Naylor, a graduate of the California Culinary Institute. They started creating baby food together during playdates when their sons were babies. Their philosophy is that infants are born with taste buds that should be nurtured from the first taste of solid food. Judging from the way my children enjoyed their Petite Palate meals, they've succeeded!

One included an annual trip to Freeport, ME, the home of LLBean. And while our purchase was larger than I need to share, a few highlights are in need.
Carson had outgrown last years' bean jacket, which was hand-me-downed to Wes. So we started our shopping in need of a new windbreaker, and Carson selected the Casco Bay Jacket in red, a bit big, but it'll fit him for at least a year.. And while I grabbed a few Double L Polos and Nana gathered vests as holiday gifts, the highlight of our Bean's shopping was a backpack for big-boy school!
LLBean has a lifetime warranty that STILL hasn't been necessary for my seventh grade backpack (21 years later, after middle school, high school, college... and beyond.) Our nearly-5-year-old tried on many bags, settling on the Junior Original Book Pack (nearly a replica of mine) -- which made him such a big kid that it brought tears to Nana's eyes, and a lump in my throat. The bag, measuring 14½"H x 11"W x 6"D, has a deep front pocket and the pack area is large enough to include his daily folder, artwork and a lunchbag. Both zipper shut. The padded shoulder pads sits comfortably on his shoulders, with enough growning room for this bag to fit well beyond the time that hard backed books will be coming home with homework assignments.
Because we have the LLBean VISA, the bag was personalized with his initials for free, and we added a coordinating insulated lunch box--beyond large enough to fit his daily needs. And no waiting for personalization was necessary. Another perk to the card, in addition to points and coupons, everything ships free. So, we left, with many packages heading towards home. And a few bags of clothing, gifts and can't resist maple syrup candy, to smush into the car.
Of course, due to LLBean's speedy service, the packages were all waiting for us at our door when we returned.
Next month, Mama Mio will introduce 2 new fitness programs aligned with some of their best-selling products: the Boot Camp in a Box Series. I scored a press sample of the series and decided to give it a go.
Developed by Efua Baker, "London's Top Fitness Guru", and the Mama Mio founders, the series ties 5 Mama Mio skincare products (which smell delightful and feel sensational) to a quick-fit routine. They promise that by doing the program just 3-5 minutes a day for 30 days, you'll see a sleeker profile.
Buyers will have the option of selecting either Bootcamp for Boobs or Bootcamp for Butts. Being the type-A persona that I tend to be, I opted for both. That's right, I'm going for the full profile.
I invite you to follow me through the routine. For the next month over in our articles area, I'll share how the fitness routine is working for me, as well as any trials I have. And, hopefully, in just 30 days, I'll see a sleeker profile (sorry, no before and after shots here.)
Sick of overly sweet and mass market themed travel bags for your tots? Unwilling to check your style at the gate when you travel with your children?
You can take it with you, when "it" is Dwell style. Leave the nursery behind but travel the extra style mile when you pack up your children's belongings in this gorgeous, easy to love, sturdily laminated canvas weekender bag from Dwell baby. Inner compartments keep small sundries sorted and a light lining makes it easy to find all. The bag is capacious enough for a long weekend at grandmas (room for a couple of dwells cute toys as well) or several days at the seashore. It's not too big to use as a carry on however. An included tag allows your kids to identify the bag as their own. Good thing. Some parents might be tempted to steal it for themselves.
My normally disgusting floor has been immaculate lately due to the recent addition of a Kruz Dirt Devil. Yah, I have a Roomba and a vaccum. But with a toddler who thinks the best thing since sliced bread is to drop Goldfish [or insert other crumbly snack here] on the kitchen floor and then stomp on them and giggle, you can imagine the state of my floor on any given day.
So even though "Rosie," (our Roomba) gets run each night, that doesn't help with the hourly floor problems. We got a Kruz Dirt Devil for those in-between times. It's a cordless vaccum with a sleek look to it. It hangs out in the corner of my kitchen and rather than being an eye sore it seems to blend right in. It sits in a charging doc so it's always ready go to.
It works on hard surfaces and is shaped to reach hard angles. But the bottom line for me is that it's cool-looking and quick - quick enough that I can grab it, run it over the floor after lunch and have a relatively clean floor again in 60 seconds or less.
Oh and the child labor aspect, that refers to my 4.5 year old, who thinks it's the coolest and runs it any chance he gets. Seriously. At least 10 times a day he's running it in our kitchen because "Mom, you missed a spot," or "I found another spot of kitty hair." Unsure how long this phase will last, let's hope awhile.

See Kai Run introduces Fall Collection, and their newest shoes
So, our recent See Kai Run shipment was met with oohs, ahhs, and disappointment. Oohs and aahs because, as usual, SKR wowed us with the adoreableness of their latest collection. I just love manning-up my little one's feet, as a friend once nodded in agreement, with boys, the cute stuff is in the shoes. With sueded loafers and saddles, the boys shoes are fantastic. As are the sueded MaryJanes and and sweet athletics for the girls. And those are only a few favorites. As always, the quality is exceptional. I've always loved the flexibility of See Kai Run's rubber soles, and their super soft leathers. The width in the toes is exceptional for growing feet, as is the lack of an arch (available in the best of baby shoes, and necessary in allowing baby's feet to form on their own.)
The disappointment? Our shoes didn't fit. Which made for more oohs and ahhs when I passed them on to Whitney's son, for sampling. Of course, the little guy smiled with joy.
And very exciting news, See Kai Run is getting smaller by introducing their newest shoes, smaller. smaller shoes, made for baby and toddler, have a small footprint with 2 nonslip rubber pads sewn into the leather soft-soles. Crafted with the same precision as their big siblings, smaller shoes cradle baby's feet and the same big person style of regular See Kai Run shoes. These tiny urban shoes close with leather (to adjust for width) and add comfort around the ankle with a leather lining, and padding sewn inside.
Since my baby is now considered an older baby (she's seven and a half months), I knew it was time to find my next baby carrier. The popular one (that I use every day) is going to be too small for her soon. I'm loving the Angel Pack LX Soft Structured Carrier (price ranges from $118 - $139), which is an soft structured mei tei style carrier with buckles, a padded waist, padded straps. My daughter was comfortable in it and I was happy to have my hands free to chase after my almost 3 year old. The Angel Pack LX was created by mom Nelly Diaz, who also makes the original Angel Pack Mei Tai Carrier. Unlike the popular carrier I was using, you can do a front, back or hip carry with the Angel Pack LX. Click here for visual, step by step directions. For the front carry: simply clip and adjust the waist belt, seat your baby in and put the carrier over the baby. The shoulder straps should be clipped already, so just slide your arms in while holding onto the baby. Then attach the chest strap (behind your shoulders). I will be trying the hip carry next -- click here to see a video demo from Frogmama.com.
You know how when you're pregnant and baby drains all your brains? You call it BabyBrain. Then you're a mom, and, again, baby drains all your brain, and you call it MommyBrain. So when you're breastfeeding and the draining of the brains is even worse, what would you call it? BoobyBrain, right?
Except boobybrain is a brilliant concept, and a beautiful one at that. A mothers' nursing bracelet with unique clock, it has 12 large jewels separated by 3 smaller beads each, each large jewel represents an hour on the clock. Select your "12" and start counting. Each time you finish breastfeeding you'll move the "timekeeper" charm to the jewel that represents the hour of your feed and then further to the 1/4 of the hour (by counting the 3 beads as :15, :30, and :45.) Three hours later, feed and move the charm again. boobybrain bracelets are a great way to track your feeding... because we all know when you have BoobyBrain, even recalling the time of the next feeding can be difficult; with the assistance of a boobybrain mother's bracelet, you'll have a beautiful assitance.
Every boobybrain bracelet is an original, so select a style you want and if its not available, one will be hand-created for you.
While I can't promise boobybrain bracelets will keep your brain from draining the whoas of motherhood, it will offer one less thing to weigh down your brain in the myriad of baby things.
To order, find your favorite look at the boobybrain website and send an inquiry e-mail. She'll work with you to create your bracelet, and, when you mention MOMMIES, you'll receive a 10% discount.
Use coupon code birthday08 before September 1st to receive 30% off everything. Love Uncommonly Cute, I get comments all the time when my boys are wearing their shirts.

One of my favorite eco-friendly e-tailers just got better. In time for back-to-school, they've added some fun new products you'll love to stick in Jr.'s pencil case, or have around for rainy-day or afterschool actiivites. Like the super popular crayon rocks, made from non-toxic soy wax and tinted with natural mineral powders. A hit in our home, crayon rocks are eco-friendly crayons, in the form of, of course, rocks. A new favorite of many an occupational therapist, the rocks are wonderful tools for helping small hands to color, as they fit inside the hand. (Stubby Pencil Studiois also the place to find soy crayons, recycled newspaper Smencils and colored pencils--all obvious choices for Jr.'s pencil box at school).
We recently took a grabbag of Stubby Pencil Studio products on a vacation. Along with the crayon rocks, the boys loved the Fun and Fruity dough--just like the dough we love, but "green" and smelly (and smelly in a good way.) While on that trip, we surprised Daddy with a festive birthday celebration, complete with one of Stubby Pencil's newest finds: Festive Flag Banner. Bright and colorful, we used the flag train to decorate our party area, a la a PBK catalog. The banner has since been retired to our playroom, as we had quite an argument as to who's bedroom it would reside. Another favorite, Stubby Pencil Studio's own recycled coloring cards, which were perfect for decorating special birthday cards for Daddy and leaving notes of thanks to the host family.
You'll find many more favorites at Stubby Pencil Studio. They currently have several special offers running including:
-a FREE Flip & Tumble Bag when you spend $100
-a FREE Monkey Pencil set with every order (make sure to add it to your cart.)
-A box of 24 EcoPencils with sharpener when you purchase 3 sets of Color n' Kids cards.
And.... Readers will receive a free Thank You Variety Pack of Color 'n Kids cards with any purchase. $7.95 value, expires 12/31/08. Enter MWSfall08 at checkout in the Questions, comments or BONUS CODES box.

Radio Flyer Sport Coupe Ride-On Car: Too cool for your living room
My toddler is having a ball with Radio Flyer's Sport Coupe Ride-On Car ($99.99). He loves cruising around our apartment in this gleaming red classic ride-on car which comes with an fun light-up electric dashboard. You can play the "radio", which is a bunch of short catchy songs that I even end up humming at times. You can also use the "turn signal" and the "starter key", as well as the spinning steering wheel and honking horn. His favorite thing is the car door that opens and closes. The removable gas cap is also a cool feature. The lights and the grill are terrific realistic looking sticker decals.
This ride-on does great outside - if you need to, you can attach a "push" handle to the back. There is a retractable child
footrest, which will make it easier if you want to push your child in it. Recommended ages are 1- 3 and the weight limit is 40 pounds.
Not only does Vincent Shoes have some killer prices in their Closeout Cubby at the moment, but they are having a special 5-day back to school sale for customers. I'm on vacation, otherwise I would have posted this sooner but you have four days left so be sure to click on over!
Take advantage of the coupon and stock up on shoes for back to school. I got Cole the cutest pair for the fall - the Fredrik's in brown. (pictured) They're so adorable and gotta love the easy on/off with the velcro strap for toddlers.
Anyway, use coupon code B2S-Bonanza for 20% off your order by Monday, August 18th.
The latest from Skip Hop in their on-going quest to keep us Moms organized is the Bin-Go organizer. It comes in two sizes - large storage bin and the tabletop organizer.
I currently have the chocolate tabletop organizer on top of the desk in my office. It's serving as immediate mail storage for me. A divider in the middle seperates what I've dealt with and haven't dealt with yet, and four pockets on the outside are there for random storage. Really, I assume this was especially made with a changing table in mind - the side pockets are convenient for pacifiers, diaper rash cream and other baby accessories. It's $20 and comes in some great colors (my favorite is the chocolate/neutral but sky blue/neutral and raspberry/neutral are great for nurseries) It also has handles so it's portable and can function as a mobile changing station.
You can use your imagination with the large storage bin - books, toys, blankets and more. Tote it around with the handles, fold it flat when you don't need it. It retails for $25.

phil and ted's metoo Lightweight Portable High Chair: We love the metoo too!
By Guest Reviewer Kara
Best known for their stylish and practical inline double strollers, New Zealand based phil and tedsalso offer the hip and practical metoo portable highchair. If you have a sturdy table or breakfast bar, then your big clunky highchair days are over! The metoo is a fully collapsible seat that clamps right onto the side of most tables, creating an instant highchair. Now, your little one can eat right at the table with the rest of your family. We tested the red metoo by attaching it to our solid wood dining table. Our 11-month old loves it. She happily swings her legs below as she enjoys breakfast and lunch at the head of the table with my husband and me. I must admit that I was a little nervous at first. After all, my baby is hanging off the side of a table. But after a few meals, I relaxed-- realizing there really was no danger. The shoulder and lap harness snap together in front, and the clamps have a rubber flange for a secure grip. She’s not going anywhere.
The seat is engineered to hold children up to 40lbs. Please note its intended use is for babies and children who are already sitting up on their own. Although I enjoy using the metoo at home, it was cleverly designed to be a portable highchair. Weighing a mere 2lbs and collapsing down to 1 inch thick, you can take your metoo anywhere. We receive many compliments on it at restaurants. Constructed with a high quality, lightweight aluminum frame and easy to clean nylon fabric, the metoo will sustain long term use and abuse. I think the metoo is a great product for home and travel.

Look great and feel great when working out and beyond
In the past I have reviewed a great company called SkirtSports and their athletic gear. Developed by a female Ironman Champion, SkirtSports helps women easily go from working out to out-and-about in the form of comfortable and high performance workout wear.
The company started with just a fitness skirt, but recently their product line has expanded and they introduced their first running dress, called the Footloose Running Dress. This flattering dress features lightweight fabric with a built-in shelf bra, V-neck, all-mesh panel racerback for comfort and moisture management, and a non-restrictive empire waistband.
I tried out my Footloose Running Dress at a recent 2.5k run. The dress was very comfortable, cool, and extremely flattering. I got a number of compliments on it both at the run and after!
Perfect for working out, running, playing tennis, wearing to the beach, or just running around with the kids all day, this is a functional, flattering piece that is a welcome addition to any wardrobe. Pair it with a pair of SkirtSports Spankies, GirlShorties, or Shorties for underneath support and coverage and you are all set.
