I'm Cuckoo for Cranky Pants
I've been trying to get a hold of a pair of Crankypants to review ever since the very first time I stumbled across them while surfing the web about a year ago. To be honest, I became a little obsessed with seeing them first hand. So much so that I literally chased down a mom at the Baby Celebration LA conference last spring. I saw a flash of monster tooth on her child's cute little butt and it was more exciting to me than a celebrity sighting. I had to get a closer look.
Read on to get the full scoop on these adorable pants and a chance to win your own!
I guess I made an impression on that mom, because when I spoke to designer/owner/brilliant-mom-with-creative-vision Amy Kett, she said "Oh yeah, I heard about you from my customer". Hmmm. It's a fine line though between product aficionado and product stalker. These pants might easily have pushed me over the edge!
As I type this, I am gratified to tell you that I have a pair of Crankypants in my hot little hands and guess what? They're worth the wait! They live up to the hype! They don't make me feel cranky at all. They make me feel quite happy actually. What could be more smile-worthy, than watching your little one wiggling away with a hand-knit, snaggle toothed monster adorning their bum?
Crankypants are knit from soft merino wool. They were previously only available in extremely limited quantities, due to the very sad fact that there were only so many pairs of pants that Amy could knit. I'm sure her fans have had fantasies about locking Amy up in the attic with the vague promise of ice cream rewards, or perhaps cloning her (instead of some silly wooly sheep). All so she could knit more and more Crankypants. Really, people, the woman has a kid of her own to care for! Fortunately the lockdown/cloning will not be necessary. Very soon Crankypants will be more readily available and Amy might even get a break. Although I doubt she'll rest for long. She's already cranking out some adorable matching monster bibs!
Amy has enlisted the help of other hand knitting moms living in South America, to assist her on her baby-cutification project. She searched far and wide, long and hard to arrange for a responsible and truly fair trade arrangement that could bring more of these pants to you. So you can not only feel good about getting a pair but also about knowing that the job of knitting these pants helps these other moms do something they love, and stay home with their families.
I waited a year for my close encounter with Crankypants but one of you won't have to wait that long. Mommies with Style has one pair of Crankypants to give away to a lucky reader. Just leave a comment below telling us your favorite "term of endearment" for your child when he/she is fussing (no obscenties please!) and you will be entered to win one pair of these beauties in a size 6/12 months, as modeled by my own Mr FussyMcFusserpants.
One lucky winner will be chosen at random on Friday the 12th of September.
Note: Please be sure to check your email in a timely fashion as we will move on to another address if there is no response in 72 hrs. And you'd be cranky to see you missed out!

I always refer to my sweet baby as "amor," which is spanish for "love." However, when he is fussy, my tone changes.

My favorite name for my daughter when she is fussy/cranky is just plain ole' crabby. I will often tell my hubby when he gets home, "She is all yours, she is way too cranky!".

I actually call my daugher Miss Crankypants when she fusses. LOL I think its a bit ironic because the name really does fit her and we have been dying to snag a pair of the pants for so long.

Our little Keely went through a tough second month with all sorts of gas issues before bedtime. When the night fell, she turned into a "Keely Monster" The name truly stuck after my sister babysat one evening. She said, with a smile, that we were being kind by calling her Keely Monster! Thankfully, she is doing much better now; hopefully in the future, we can change her nickname into Cookie Monster.

We are huge Transformer fans here and my newest name for Sirius is "Bratimus Prime" (not to be confused with his older and gassier brother, "Fartimus Prime"), before that it was the rather bulkier "Sirius Orion brat baby" lol.

I call my kids "sir cranky men"
Posted by: Tory Wright | September 6, 2008 05:33 PM
My two favorite terms for my kids are "dollbaby" and "P.I.T.A." It's really funny when my little one gets mad and screams "dollbaby" like he's saying something really mean. And, Pita, you may be able to figure out what that stands for, but my kids don't know and when I tell them to stop being a Pita, they reply "I'm not" as if they know. It's pretty amusing to say the least.
Posted by: Dayna | September 6, 2008 05:37 PM

I call my little guy a "crabby patty" when he is fussing. His 5 year old sister loves Spongebob so I hear that name come up quite often. It makes her giggle and me too whenever I say it. Then he stops fussing because we are giggling and he smiles so it works out well :)
Posted by: Liz | September 6, 2008 06:13 PM
Our favorite term of endearment is the one we use for our 6 yo daughter. It is "Chahisser". That name arose when she was a newborn and I was reading Miss Spider's New Car. My dh overheard me making the different sounds, one of them "Chahiss" and that's how it started.

Amy knows quite well that I won't stop stalking her until I have some crankypants...so, do you think the promise of ice cream in the attic will really work? ROFL!!

Well, we have many nicknames for our little high-needs girl when she is being less sugar and more spice, lol, but I'll stick to one. The easiest way to tell if she's been "testing us" more than usual (I have that on a onesie--"Nothing's wrong--just testing you!"), is that instead of talking about what Chloe did today, we talk about what The Chloe did today. She's not baby Chloe anymore, she's The Chloe, who is a fearsome creature with mighty vocal powers, lol.

When our little darling was being... um... difficult, especially in those early months when the fussing can go on and on... we used to call him "bag of rats". Sometimes sung to a variation of the "Toys R Us" jingle.
He still has "bag of rats" moments, but hey, he's our bag of rats. :-)

My family's origin is hungarian descended so we lovingly call our son, our little "dupa" when he is being extremely grouchy and cranky. Since "dupa" is slang for butt, it has a two-fold meaning. Whenever we change his pants we always refer to his bum as his dupa and when he gets extremely fussy, he is our "Baby Dupa"!

My oldest son is Turd Bucket when he's crabby. Dunno why, it just came out of either me or DH one day and it stuck! My youngest is Fuss Muffin. Cuter name, but not as funny. :P

He used to be "Mister Grouchy Bottom" but since I'm a big fan of shortening things, it's usually just "Mister" :)

When our 7 month old, Luke, is a little cranky we like to sing a little song that goes something like:
Lukey loo, fussy poo, please please don't be blue cuz I love you Lukey loo. Gets him smiling most of the time!

Senor Crabby-Pantalones... I have no idea how crabby-pants became pantalones (I don't really even speak Spanish) but the senor seemed appropriate after that :)
