Thomas & Friends’ new CGI movie, Hero of the Rails, is being released on DVD today — as well as airing on PBS KIDS throughout the month of September, starting today in certain markets. During the last weekend of September it will be also shown in certain theaters – click here to find theaters in your area.
This is a big deal because it is the first time Thomas and the other engines speak in their own voices (along with the familiar narrator to guide the story). The CGI graphics were amazing, especially the dream sequence.
Spencer, the arrogant silver engine, is back on the Island of Sodor for the summer. He challenges Thomas to a race around the island. While racing Spencer, Thomas gets lost and meets an old, broken down engine, Hiro. Hiro was a famous engine from Japan who’s been hiding in the woods for years because he’s afraid that they’ll send him to be scrapped. Thomas feels bad for him and works to restore him to make him a really useful engine. Eventually Thomas learns he can’t do it alone and enlists some other engines to help him restore Hiro. New engine Victor and crane Kevin are introduced. Will the team be able to help Hiro?
I attended a special blogger preview event in early August with my almost 4 year old son. He’s a huge Thomas fan and was riveted when we watched a preview of the movie. Click here to see my whrrl slideshow of the event.
