Geared Up For Summer: Backpacks and Sleeping Bags

Although summer days are still months away, if you’re like me, your June-August calendar is probably pretty filled up. Between vacations, summer camp, out-of-town friends, overnights at grandmas, family events and camping trips, the calendar is booked with upcoming adventures. One thing I’ve learned about adventuring with kids:

The right gear can make all the difference.

This summer we’ll be adding two new pieces of gear for our 5-year-old adventurer – the Junior Backpack from Deuter and the expandable Big Dipper 30 sleeping bag from Kelty.

Deuter Junior Backpack – Whether it’s beach toys or library books, clothes for an overnight or a mountain of Legos, it’s an exciting phase when your kids get old enough to start carrying some of their own stuff. The Deuter Junior backpack is the perfect starter backpack. The 17″ x 9.4″ x 7.5″ frame is big enough to be useful but not so big as to overwhelm your child. Other features of the Deuter Junior include two mesh side pockets, two zippered front pockets, a “secret” zippered top pocket, chest strap, 3M reflector tape and S-shaped padded shoulder straps. Available in blue or green, my son is thrilled to be able to wear a “big boy backpack” and I’m thrilled that my bag just got lighter. (Available at Deuter for $39)

Kelty Big Dipper 30 – say sayonara to the kids growing out of this one for a while. The unique Big Dipper 30 sleeping bag fits kids from 4’4″ up to 5’4″ with an additional zip-out 12″ extension at the foot of the sleeping bag. While this mummy-style sleeping bag has many of the same standards as their adult sleeping bags (zipper draft tube, sleeping pad security loops, two-way zipper, pillow pocket), the Big Dipper 30 also comes with some kid-focused features like an integrated compression sack that won’t get lost and an elastic (instead of drawstring) hood for safety. My son is measuring almost 3 1/2 feet tall, so this sleeping bag will fit my son perfectly for the next year – and come the following year, when he’s probably shot up another two foot, I’ll be glad to know I just have to unzip the extension instead of buying a whole new bag. Available in blue and pink. (Available at Kelty for $69.99)

What gear makes traveling with your kids easier?

Lowepro Fastpack: For Serious Travelers (Camera & Laptop Storage)

Going on a big trip and need something that will store your digital camera and laptop?  This Lowepro Fastpack means business.  It’s designed for the photographer and editor who needs to travel with their laptop and DSLR.

See that bottom pouch part?  It has a nifty little storage area for a big camera, plus compartments for lenses.

That back zipper is for the laptop and all of your other odds and ends. It’s deceivingly big – I was surprised once I unzipped how much more room there was for additional items beyond just a laptop.

Get it on Amazon for $68.88 with free shipping! (It’s normally $119.99 but Amazon has it on super sale right now.)

Backpacks for the whole family; 20% off coupon code – Cow Animal Daysack

On our recent trip, we each had our own individual backpacks that we carried when we went out for the day. Even my 2.5-year old son has his own! His was the most adorable, toddler-sized backpack I have ever seen – the Cow Animal Daysack by LittleLife. It’s perfect for traveling because your child can have their own drink, snacks and a small toy inside. He loved wearing his Cow Daysack everywhere!

It has padded shoulder straps and a chest strap to stay comfortably on, name and an address label inside the pack and a top grab handle for the pack for when you need to carry it. In addition, there is a removable safety strap if you would like to be able to have your child within arms reach at all times. The Animal Daysack also has a weatherproof hood that stows away in a zippered top pocket; open it out and your child can complete the transformation from little person to little cow! It is so cute and my son loved wearing his cow hood. Besides the cow, the Daysacks are also available in a turtle, ladybug and bumblebee, and are appropriate for ages approximately six months to three years old. My son really enjoyed toting around his own stuff and I am sure yours will too.

My husband and I shared the Shaun White Backpack from Burton. It is an awesome, laptop backpack that has more storage and compartments than I have ever seen in a backpack! In addition to the nicely padded laptop compartment, it also features an Easy-Access, Side-Entry zipper, which is an added bonus when quickly stowing the laptop in a tight space like an airplane. My husband is always anally organized, so he especially appreciated that this pack had a plethora of pockets and compartments.

There are a handful of easy to access, exterior pockets, great for PDA’s, cell phones, MP3 players, and even snacks. Additionally, there are a myriad of interior pockets, great for storing cords, power packs, office supplies, etc. Once we saw the backpack arrive, and knew how easily it would keep us organized on the go, it was a no brainer to quickly unpack our existing backpack, and replace it with the Shaun White backpack. While Shaun himself is a champ on the half-pipe, at the very least, you will travel like champs with his backpack! It’s currently on sale for a great price!

Perfect for Preschoolers: Skip Hop’s Zoo Pack Backpack

048There wasn’t anything cuter earlier this week than the sight of my first time preschooler walking into his new school for his first day with a Skip Hop Monkey Zoo Pack on his back.

I may be biased but there’s no denying that the line of Zoo Packs from Skip Hop are completely adorable and perfect for any preschooler. At 11.5 inches high, these backpacks are great for the first time student. (As a comparison, I just bought my Kindergartener his backpack and it’s 16 inches high.)

There’s a write-on tag inside so you can mark it with their name, a front pocket for little extras and ample room for any preschool needs like extra pull ups, art work, spare set of clothes.

At $20, these bags are BPA-free, Phthalate-free, PVC free.  Get it on Amazon, in-store at Target or Toys R Us or direct from Skip Hop.

Baby Bee Bags: Modern diaper bags with style, comfort & convenience!

fabien11I love my new Fabien diaper bag from Baby Bee Bags! Fabien is a medium size backpack bag that is extremely stylish and comes in beautiful exterior waterproof fabrics (so easy to keep clean). It’s so comfortable to wear, thanks to the awesome padded and adjustable backpack straps. It also comes with additional attached straps that make it a cinch to hang from your stroller. One of my favorite features is the built in cell phone pocket that is conveniently located on the backpack strap which make it so easy to slide your phone in and out. The pocket was even wide enough to just fit my Blackberry!

For being a medium sized diaper bag, the amount of storage is fantastic! On the outside of my Fabien are two external side bottle/sippy cup pockets. We are in the sippy cup stage and it fit my smaller sippy cups nicely. There is a good sized pouch type pocket on the lower half of the bag that is great for storing your small essentials that you need easy access to. I keep my wallet, tissues and some small toys inside. Next, is the second zippered compartment that unzips into a large, padded, detachable, and washable changing pad and behind the pad are two netted pockets to hold diapers, wipes, creams, etc. Also inside this pocket is a clip where you can hang a pacifier or your keys so you can access them super quick – great when your child is having a meltdown and you can’t find your pacifier to soothe them or can’t find your keys quick enough to make a fast getaway! The clip to the rescue!

fabien21The main zippered compartment has plenty of room for a change of clothes, toys, food or anything else you want to tote around with you. It features two interior stretchable bottle/sippy cup holders and two interior organization pockets for other smaller items that you don’t want to get lost in your bag. The bag closes with magnetic tic tacks to allow quiet access to your bag without waking up your sleeping little one. I also love the fact that it can’t snag on your clothes!

So if you’re looking for a diaper bag that doesn’t scream that’s its one, check out the Fabien diaper backpack bag. It’s a gorgeous bag both in and out and will keep you looking stylish and organized! Use code MWS to save 15% off of your purchase until June 30th.
