Bullyproof Your Child for Back To School

I first learned about the Gracie method when one of my friends shared their audition for Oprah’s own show on YouTube. Their videos had millions of hits and the charismatic brothers became an overnight sensation. These two engaging coaches take a no nonsense, FUN, approach to teaching kids the skills to both give them confidence and the ability to defend themselves. Two essentials for making themselves “bullyproof”. Now the Bullyproof series is available on DVD.

Whether you live in the inner city or the poshest suburb, your kids will at some point face a bully. Consider this:

  • According to the National Education Association, 160,000 kids miss school every day in the U.S. just to avoid a bully.
  • According to the U.S. Secret Service, the majority of school shootings have been linked to cases of excessive bullying.
  • Studies show that adults who were bullied as children have higher levels of depression and lower self-esteem than those who weren’t

The Gracie Academy was established in 1925 to teach kids and adults vital self defense skills through the art of Jiu-Jitsu.

You don’t have to live near the Gracie Academy to learn from the Gracie family. You can learn remotely using their innovative dvd series. Watch the short video above for a preview of the sort of games/activities you’ll find in this DVD series.

We were initially apprehensive about these videos but once we saw what they were all about, we were hooked! Each video contains a series of exercises that are really games. In fact they are called the “Gracie Games”. These exercises are pretty similar to what your kids already do, rolling around wrestling with each other, with you or a friend. But they have specific objectives and moves. And they are fun. Fun for you and your kids. It’s a great way to be active and physically rewarding. My kids had such pride at being able to “beat” me and their dad at various wrestling assignments.

The videos are a full course in that you can register your child online, purchase a belt and receive stripes for your accomplishments when you send in a video of your child performing the assignments.

Check out one of the games online for a taste of what this video series is about. I cannot think of a better gift for your children than the gifts of confidence, security and physical fitness that this series promises. The fact that the Gracies make it fun is just the icing!

Summer Entertaining with Seafood, Hosted by Stop and Shop

Tired of hot dogs and hamburgers on the grill? If you are planning on entertaining this summer, we’re got some different ideas and recipes for you!  I recently attended Stop & Stop‘s Summer Entertaining Luncheon, hosted by their Consumer Advisor Andrea Astrachan at Aquagrill in NYC. Cheeses were provided by Sorrento and Président.

Chef Jeffrey Marshall, Chef/Owner of Aquagrill gave us tips and tricks on how to prepare seafood and getting kids to love it. He showed us how to make several dishes, which we got to enjoy after he finished each demo. We sampled the delicious Crostini of Sorrento Fresh Mozzarella with Truffle Spinach and Wild Mushrooms over Rocket Arugula with Aged Balsamic Vinegar,  Sautéed Wild Pacific Shrimp (pictured) with President Feta Cheese Gnocchi, Parisienne Zucchini and Roasted Plum Tomatoes in a Fresh Basil Sauce  – which was divine, recipe at the end of this post) and the super yummy Sorrento Velvety Smooth Ricotta Cheese Sorbet with Warm Local Strawberries in a Strawberry Syrup.

We loved all three recipes, but the one I will be making soon is the Sautéed Wild Pacific Shrimp.

Besides sampling these dishes, we learned that Stop & Shop is committed to selling only Sustainable Seafood — read more about their Sustainable Seafood Policy here. They are also committed to buying local produce and supporting family farms.

I Can Do that Games for active kids & active imaginations

A couple of games worth checking out as you do the last of your Christmas and holiday shopping by I Can Do That Games include:

Cat in the Hat – I Can Do That! – Someone gave this to my youngest in November when he turned 3.  It’s been hugely popular in our house with my boys – so much so that I’m a little tired of playing it (cut Mommy a break here, kids!)  It’s $19.99 on Amazon.  Players pick up cards and have to do different tasks based on what the cards tell them.  They use cool Dr. Seuss item-props to play the game.  Check out the fun little 39 second video on Amazon to find out more about it.  It’s currently selling for $19.99 on Amazon, with free shipping.

Dr. Seuss’ Super Stretchy ABC will be a breeze for all you Yoga Mamas, for the rest of you, be warned: prepare to get flexible!  This one is definitely a game made for little bodies as this Mommy’s only too-aware of her age when she plays this game.  Think of it as a younger kid’s version of Twister, with an ABC twist.  Players earn chips the more they stretch.  It’s currently $21.20 on Amazon.

Lastly, I received a sample of Richard Scarry’s Busytown game.  Richard Scarry’s books have been entertaining kids for decades, and now there’s a game to go along with the books – Busytown.  It’s I-spy-ish in that you race around the town looking for hidden objects.  The game board’s over six feet long so clear some floor space!

Check out the I Can Do That Games site to read more about their products and to see what other games they carry.

Planning on easier back to school mornings, snacks and dinners with Kashi

tlcWe received our Kindergartner’s bus schedule yesterday. Sending him to Kindergarten doesn’t bother me. The bus isn’t worrying me. What terrifies me is that I’m going to have to get 3 kids and me dressed, packed, ready and fed (including one of them breastfed) all before a time we’re used to. And while I’d love to feed everyone a 5-course meal with all the necessary vitamins, I know me, and I know its not going to happen.

What is going to happen, though, is that they’ll be eating lots of cereal and snack bars for breakfast, because they’re yummy. And, thank goodness, easy and healthy. We’ve always been a fan of GOLEAN Crunch! (the boys love the crunch) and we recently sampled GOLEAN Crunch! with Honey Almond Flax (which I enjoyed as a good, healthy alternative). But the boys were so hooked on the Baked Apple Spice Cereal Bars I’ve had to restock my pantry several times since the samples came. This is the cereal bar they’re likely to eat every day before school this fall.

At snack time, they sampled a few of the GOLEAN Snack bars, including Peanut Butter & Chocolate which got a “Mommy, this is MUCH yummy” compliment and the TLC Chewy Bar received a “oooh! I like this one!” I tried the GOLEAN Crunchy Bar in Cinnamon Coffee Cake and quickly added it to my grocery list as well–a mom needs to snack when she’s breastfeeding.

For dinners this fall, because I don’t expect to be running a 5 star restaurant any time soon, I’m very happy with Kashi’s 7 Whole Grain Pilaf sides. They’re simple to make — just heat up and serve (only 60 seconds in the microwave).  My fave is Fiery Fiesta.

Want to try some?  Of course you can find Kashi products at your grocery store, but don’t head over there without a coupon. Click here and save $1.50 off one of their high fiber cereals.

Moms in the ‘Wood: Silver Spoon Style!

wigdogOne of the very best parts of being a Mommies With Style west coast writer, are the opportunities I have to hang out with Celeb Moms and hear about the latest and greatest products they are using, as well as the old standards that are still their faves. Recently I attended the Silver Spoon Dog and Baby Buffet. Moms, dads, kids and furry babies all attend this family friendly event each year and get treated to organizer Melissa & Lorena’s latest finds. It’s one of my favorite events to attend: celebs, great products, families, what’s not to love?!  Plus, if you are really lucky, you might even see a dog in a pink wig.

Some of my favorites from this year’s event included classics like:

I was also delighted by some new (to me) finds :

Expect more detailed reviews of some of these products in the weeks to come!

Celebrities in attendance at this event included  Tori Spelling, Chad Lowe, Scott Baio, Kara Dioguardi, Ali Landry, Audrina Partridge, Samantha Harris, Joley Fisher, Candis Cayne, Jai Rodriguez, Karina Smirnoff, Marissa Jaret Winokur, Barry Watson, and Allison Sweeney.
