At the Movies: Regal’s Free Family Film Festival Starts This Week

Do you have a Regal Entertainment Movie Theater near you?  We do – and this week starts the Free Family Film Festival for the summer.

Every summer on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10 am, there are two free children’s movies to pick from at your local Regal Movie Theater.

Check out the schedule to see if there’s a theater near you, and what’s playing each week.  It’s a great free activity for the kids on rainy or too-hot day!  I’m looking forward to taking advantage of this and taking my boys to a couple of these movies while the Festival is running.

Alvin & the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel – We’re obsessed

In the last few months, my boys have become obsessed with Alvin & the Chipmunks.  It started when they saw the modern-day original version of the movie on TV a few months ago.  Since then, they ask for Alvin & the Chipmunks all of the time.

Lucky for us, we were able to get them out to the theater to see Alvin & the Chipmunks: the Squeakquel.  They loved it.    In fact, we all loved it so much that I ended up downloading most of the soundtrack on my iPhone before we even got home.  True story.  Just so we could hook it up and listen to the music before we got back.

Even if you haven’t seen the original, it’s a movie worth seeing.  Dave and the Chipmunks are back but new to this movie are the Chipettes.

Alvin & the Chipmunks: the Squeakquel releases on DVD on March 30th.  Get it on Amazon with free shipping for $16.99.

Fun movie release: the Penguins of Madagascar Operation: DVD

While I don’t know that there is such a thing as too-much-Disney, I will say that it was refreshing to watch some un-Disney characters on the flight home from Disney World last week.  My boys watched the new Penguins of Madagascar Operation: DVD as we flew home from a fun-filled week in Disney World, and I have to say I was laughing right along side them at some of the takes in this movie.

You probably remember the Penguins from the Madagascar movie – I know that they were personal favorites of mine.  While watching this movie, I was reminded of how I used to love watching the Tracy Ullman show for the short Simpsons skits all those years ago.  The Penguins definitely steal the show and continue to entertain in Operation: DVD, the first full DVD feature the Penguins have to themselves.

It’s a steal at $11.99 on Amazon right now ($26.99 retail) – and fyi, it’s a full 2-hour feature so you are definitely getting a movie out of this purchase.

Winnie the Pooh: A Valentine for You on DVD

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Winnie the Pooh: A Valentine for You released earlier this month.

If you’re looking for a Valentine’s-themed movie for your kids, this is a cute one to check out.  Get it on Amazon for $26.99 with free shipping.

Movie Night at our house – Mickey’s Magical Christmas: Snowed in at the House of Mouse

houseofmouse
Movie Night at our house last night.  We popped Mickey’s Magical Christmas: Snowed in at the House of Mouse.

The boys loved it.  And me?  Only person on the planet who cries at a cartoon Tiny Tim.

Music & Movies: Our Early Fall Playlist

whatrideThe latest CD to spin in our car player, What a Ride by Eric Herman and the Invisible Band is, as my 4 year old says, much fun. With an independent sound, the music is a reflection of music we listened to in college. I can totally see dancing it out in a preschool room to Come Play! and Ants in Your Pants, and I love singing along with How Big. My son’s favorite: Stink Bug.

We’re also enjoying Putumayo Kid’s Picnic Playground, any food-lover who listens will be sure to say this is “her kinda music” as its a souppot of multicultural songs and beats celebrating food, family and fun.

Speaking of food, another CD we’re enjoying is Best of the Bowl, Ingles y Espanol by Hot Peas and Butter. This bilingual CD makes you want to get up and dance to the Latin beat as they mix the Spanish and English.

On a recent roadtrip coming home from an amusement park, the husband asked if I had any baby-appropriate music for our little one. As in, to lull her (and maybe her brothers) to calmness. Wasn’t he surprised when I popped in RockaBye Baby!’s Lullaby Renditions of Aerosmith. We sang along as the kids relaxed and calmed. From Don’t Want to Miss a Thing to Walk This Way, this is a fun sleeper. Want to gift a RockaBye Baby CD but you don’t know which one to gift? Now available on  the RockaBye Baby Music website: a Digital Download Card where the giftee can any one CD as an MP3 download. The packaging is perfect. I received mine today and opened it without reading, wondering where the CD was? Once I read the gift I was so excited to get to select my own music this time!

bravewitchLast year we hosted a Halloween Party for several of the kids’ friends. We played games, read stories and enjoyed pizza, all before Trick or Treating. But how much did we need a movie? Planning to host this year? Get a copy of A Very Brave Witch … and more Halloween Stories. In addition to A Very Brave Witch, watch animated 7 other Halloween books including A Dark, Dark Tale. Narrators include Sherry Stringfield and Elle Fanning.

Another Scholastic Storybook Treasures production, the Scholastic Treasury of Classic Bedtime Stories will help you and your kids calm for bed nightly. This collection of 4 DVDs includes 28 animated bedtime favorites including Goodnight Gorilla and Harold and the Purple Crayon. A whole month’s worth of bedtime stories!

Media Round-Up: Lots of Great Halloween Movies

Pooh’s Heffalump Halloween Movie DVD: Gift Set with Plush Pooh – Such a cute gift idea for a Halloween birthday. Little Einsteins: Fire Truck Rocket’s Blast Off – releasing tomorrow, September 8th, is the latest from our pals the Little Einsteins.  And releasing right along side it on the same day is Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Adventures in Wonderland.  Always good for our little preschool friends.  (Hint – get them both together on Amazon to receive a discount.  Stocking stuffers!)

Bakugan: Heroes Rise, Vol 4 – I’m just waiting for it here.  Earlier in 2009, my 5-year old had a huge obsession with Bakugan.  I think he fried out on it a bit as right now he’s currently into other things.  I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before he’s right back into the Bakugan world and asking for this latest DVD release, Bakugan: Heroes Rise, Vol 4. (Note that these episodes are from Season 1)

LeapFrog: Let’s Go to School – loving all of these new educational yet entertaining DVDs from LeapFrog including this Let’s Go to School release.  It’s a steal at only $8.99 on Amazon and it’s a good video for any kids who entered a new school this fall or are dealing with a school transition.

Round up: Movies for early August

Confessions of a Shopaholic (DVD) hits the stands today

Really excited to see this one as I love and have read all of Sophia Kinsella’s books:  for those of you who are also fans, the movie version of Confessions of a Shopaholic releases today on DVD.  Isla Fisher stars as the infamous Becky Bloomwood – a character whom we can probably all relate in one aspect or another.

Rent it, get it on Amazon for $16.99 (free shipping when you spend $25+) or get it locally and have a girls night out to watch it and enjoy.

Garth Brooks for kids; Casey & Bella Go to Hollywood

casey-bellaMy 5-year-old grabbed Jane Lovascio’s Casey and Bella Go to Hollywood the minute I opened the package. He’s all about new reads… it didn’t even phase him that this read was pink. He was engrossed in the story immediately, and after reading, shared the story of these cute little dog friends who travel to Hollywood and “go all around the town.” I even learned about the friends (and faux foes, hey, its Hollywood) they meet along the way. Of course, the highlight of their limelight visit is the friendship between the two–who truly are dogs’ best friends.

I’m a Garth fan. Really, really big. He probably has his own list in my list of favorite music. So Hushabye Baby’s newest installment, Lullaby Renditions of Garth Brooks (releasing today) keeps finding its way from the 3-year-old’s CD player to my own. I can sing along to the lullaby (there are no words on the CD, its just the music made into lullabies) and feel all Garth-happy and sleepy. The 3-year-old calls it his “boing boing” music because the first few notes sound like toys going “boing.”

I don’t know if it was their recent Idol appearance, but I’m suddenly reliving Queen moments. Like singing “We Will Rock You” during basketball games in high school. Of course, previewing Rockabye Baby’s Lullaby Renditions of Queen may have something to do with the nostalgic moments. Especially as I drift off into relaxation mode (can anything be more relaxing than the tune of We Are the Champions as a lullaby?) (released May 19 and available at Amazon on MP-3).
