Totes Snow Boots at Sears – $34.98, Plus 20% Off (Ending Today)

During our surprise snowstorm in October, I realized I needed to update a lot of snow accessories for my boys.  Both of them needed new boots, as they had grown out of their previous pairs over the summer.

We received this pair of Totes Boys Boots from Sears for Nate recently and I’m impressed with both the quality and the price!  I sometimes find it tough to justify spending a fortune on something that’s going to be grown out of after a year but boots are a tough one.  I don’t want to mess with quality when it comes to a snow boot since it’s so important when the kids are out in the cold snow!

While we have yet to try them in the snow, Nate has tried them on and said they feel “very warm and soft!”  And you can not beat the price – $34.98 for a pair.  Plus Sears is participating in Cyber Monday deals all week and shoes and boots are 20% off ending today (Dec 1st).  Add them to your cart and the discount will appear.

They also have free shipping through the end of January on all boots.

Best Friend Boot Envy

My good friend Zareen received a pair of Ugg Cardy Classic Knit Boots for Christmas and I’m finding I have some serious boot envy.  Aren’t these boots so cute?

Ugg Cardy Classic Knit Boot - $139.95

I’ve spent the last few days trolling the web for other cute boots. Here are a few more I’ve found since.  Trying hard to curb my need to buy a pair.  What do you think?

Bare Traps Ellery Boot - $69.95 at DSW

Sketcher's Gray Women's Puffster - $60 with free shipping on Shoes.com, plus 15OFF for 15% off your order at Shoes.com right now

And of course it always comes back to the Uggs. I’m also drooling over these Ugg Sundance 2′s.

What boots are you coveting this winter?  What are you wearing?

Star Wars Sneakers by Stride Rite – Get Your Darth On!

Image and video hosting by TinyPicMy five year old son is wild about Star Wars, so we were thrilled when Stride Rite asked us if we’d like to review something from their new line of Star Wars branded sneakers.  The Star Wars branded sneakers feature characters that were in the 3 original movies, plus the Clone Wars Movie and Series on Cartoon Network. Choose from Darth Vader, General Grevious, Boba Fett, Jedi, and even the Milenium Falcon (on sale for $29 in a skate style in Kids)!

We fell in love with their Captain Rex Lighted Sneakers ($55). I have to confess, I don’t watch the Clone Wars, but my husband does and he thought Captain Rex was a great choice — Captain Rex is from Star Wars’ Clone Wars Movie and has more of a role in the cartoon on the Cartoon Network  These fun light-up sneakers are great quality and have a flexible outsole, hook and loop closure and a pearlized leather upper.  Sizes range from toddler to older kid and are geared to boys.

Skechers Shape-Ups – Do They Work?

Image and video hosting by TinyPicI’m sure you’ve heard about Skechers Shape-Ups ($110 for the Breast Cancer Awareness Version). But what are they really like and do they work? In a nutshell, they ROCK!!

I recently received a pair to test out and I’ll admit, I was a bit intimidated by them. I was going out to the store, sans kids, and I figured I’d take them for a test run. They felt so odd that I quickly took them off, I wasn’t sure I should go to a supermarket with shoes that felt that different (Skechers describes the experience like walking in sand). A few days later, my friend Esti of primetimeparenting.com came over wearing hers and I related my experience. She laughed and said, “They’re great, try them again”. So, I pulled them out again. I walked around my apartment as our children played together and I loved the shoes! Esti and I agreed that they were like walking on a cloud – Skechers describes them like walking on sand.

Then came phase two: taking them to the streets. I decided to put them on to go get my lunch, taking the baby in his stroller. After a walk around the corner, I felt my calves working — like I had just done a long walk. Skechers recommends limiting daily sessions with the Shape-Ups to 25-45 minutes for the first 2 weeks, increasing you time in 5 – 10 minute increments. Walking in Shape-Ups to get stronger leg, rear end, back and ab muscles? Yeah, I’m into that!

Thank you to Skechers for sending a product sample.

Free shipping & new shoes for my stubborn three-year-old from Stride Rite

Hooray for new Stride Rite shoes.  My three year old had gotten a little too attached to his last pair of sneakers – which he fittingly called his “Hulk Smash Shoes.”  (They were green.)  Because he thought wearing them gave him superpowers, you all can understand that he was reluctant to give them up even though they were too small and hurting his feet.

So when Stride Rite sent over a couple of pair of shoes – including their new Extinction sneakers ($35) - I was jumping for joy that Cole was excited about this new pair.  He’s calling them his “Dinosaur shoes” and they’re velcro so he can put them on and off himself.

Love them.  Big Brother got a pair too.  I love the price point on these shoes too – $35, plus you get free shipping when you order two pairs or more on the Stride Rite website.

The shoe that keep on giving: CitySoles Ballet Flats

So how many times have you been out in heels, only to have screaming, tired feet at the end of the night?

Love the product that CitySlips provides to alleviate this problem.  CitySlips makes ballet flats that come in a bag.

Tuck them away in a purse and swap out your uncomfortable heels for your comfy CitySlips.  The CitySlips bag converts to a tote to then stash away your awesome-looking but not-so-comfy heels for the rest of the night.

Interchangeable shoes from Zipz; 10% off coupon code

The following review was written by guest writer and MWS member, Cheryl:

This is one of those ideas you can’t believe no one’s thought of before.  Be thankful Zipz finally did.
Zipz are shoes that have covers which completely unzip, so you can interchange covers and soles whenever the mood – or dirt – strikes. Ingenious.

It all started six years ago at a family gathering. The kids kept changing their shoes while playing dress-up, while others got theirs so muddy they had to put on different ones. Jerry Stefani mentioned to some of the other parents watching the fashion show that someone should come up with an interchangeable shoe.

Six years later, after much trial-and-error, Jerry and his brother, John, have created Zipz.

These are really fun shoes. They are similar in style to Vans or Converse. But they have a very comfy memory foam insole, and the canvas covers are thick yet soft.

And, frankly, they’re more fun. You can choose between three “souls”:  black, white, or 50/50. Then you choose your colors. Little kids covers come with Velcro up to size 11.

My six year-old son wears a youth size and got to pick between a high top, low top and zip-on style.

He was very excited to receive a skull-and-crossbones (skullz) patterned cover and another cover with flamez along with a pair of white souls. He can zip them himself and the zippers are durable enough to withstand all the yanking. My four year-old needed help to zip but it’s a fast and easy process for an adult or bigger kid (yes, they do come in adult sizes!).

You can order just a cover and a soul, and purchase different covers later. Or you can order a set, which comes with the cover of your choice and then a licorice black cover – it’s almost like getting two pair of shoes in one.

Zipz are definitely a smart answer for our fickle, fashion-conscious kids. Enter MWS10 at checkout to receive 10 percent off your order.

Behind the Scenes at Etnies skater shoes

img_7055

Normally I would not consider a tour of the offices and design lab of a shoe company a rare treat, but my recent tour of Sole Technologies and Etnies, was the rare exception. I had the privilege of a behind the scenes look at what goes into the design and technology of this popular brand of skater shoes, based in Southern California. You’ve probably seen Etnies in a store near you, but if not, you can shop for Etnies online.

One thing that makes this company unique are that they are the only brand designed around the community of skateboarders, and with their needs in mind. Skateboarders are phenomenally hard on shoes and the sport is famous for eating your shoes alive. Think about it – every time a skateboarder flips up the board with their toe/side of their foot, and the shoe contacts the sandpaperlike deck of the board, it’s gonna wear on the shoe. Furthermore  skateboarding exerts the most force on joints & feet of any sport. When skateboarders land their jumps, the force on feet and joints can be more than 5x that of their body weight. Probably why you don’t see a lot of old fat skaters on the rails!

What does all this mean to parents who are shopping for kids shoes? I think it means that skater shoes are a great choice whether or not your kid skates. They are durable. They absorb shock well. They are well ventilated. They are designed to perform. And when it comes to skater shoes, Etnies are the best. I won’t go into all the technical details – you can see some more  information about the testing process and technology behind these shoes in my Whrrl story about our Etnies visit, but suffice to say, these are the shoes I want my son wearing when he jumps off the playstructure at school! My son broke his foot landing a jump early this fall, and I had to wonder if that would have happened in more supportive and cushioned footwear.

Etnies was very good to us, allowing us to shop in the company store and giving us a gift certificate to use to try out some of their shoes. I went straight to the kids shoes and picked out something from their “Grow With Me” line of toddler shoes. Not only did the shoes that I picked look awesome, but I love that they were really highly engineered with the needs of toddlers and parents in mind.  The “last” used in the design cradles the foot, unlike many traditional shoes designs. The shoe also has a (brilliant!!!) removeable insole that gives you an extra half a size to grow into. That translates to these very durable shoes lasting much longer.  Kudos for the wide velcro opening that makes getting them on and off a snap too. My 20mo didn’t want to take these off and would not even let me come close to take off the tag, he loved em so much.

It’s nice to know the technology and personality that lives behind a brand you see often in stores. I’m genuinely impressed with the passion and commitment to technology  behind Etnies. Who knew skaters were such geeks?! And who knew that scientists at MIT and experts in the automotive/materials industry all have played a role in the development of this fashionable brand.

Ariat Shoes: You don’t always have to sacrifice style for comfort

As my pregnant body continues to grow, it’s become increasingly difficult to spend a full day in heels.  Don’t get me wrong – I’m not tossing all of my finest footwear into the back of my closet just yet, but most mornings I’ve been sliding on a pair of flats for comfort.    The newest pair to make it into my shoe rotation is a pair of Ariat Strathmore clogs.       clog

Normally when I think of clogs I picture nurses walking the corridors of a hospital…not anymore.  Ariat has managed to take the comfort and support of a clog and add some style and flair.  What results is a great everyday shoe that can be appreciated by all women who need to take a break from their heels.  The greatest thing is that they still have a bit of a heel allowing me to wear longer pants without tripping all over myself…something that’s much easier to do now that I’m 5 months pregnant.

Ariat’s co-founders set out to make the world’s most innovative performance riding boot.  Since their first pair of boots shipped in 1993, they’ve expanded their focus to include riding boots, work boots, and casual footwear.  All of their shoes are designed with the highest quality materials to dramatically reduce fatigue and stress to feet, legs and the lower back; a pregnant woman’s dream shoe!

They even have kids’ shoes!

Zareen, a Mommies with Style writer, was able to share a pair of Ariat’s children’s boots with her daughter:

probabyMia’s been kickin’ it in a pair of Ariat boots this fall.  She loves them because they are 1. pink and 2. “cowgirl boots”.  Very important criteria in her little world.  I love them because they are 1. adorable 2. durable 3. functional in any kind of weather and 4. she very willingly puts them on in the morning.

Mia’s been wearing the Ariat ProBaby boot in distressed brown/pink camo.  They are cute and well made.  They have an 8″ height and come with Ariat’s “Booster Bed” that provides extra wiggle room for growing feet.  Comfort, style, durability – what else could you ask for in a child’s boot?

The ProBaby boots retail from $71.99 and can be found at 6pm.com.  Ariat’s full line of footwear can be found at retailers such as Zappos, OnlineShoes, The Walking Company, Amazon, and Shoes.com.

Samples of Ariat’s shoes were kindly provided for this review.

Monkey-Toes Handpainted Sneakers: Fun Kicks for the Kids

Image and video hosting by TinyPicWhy shouldn’t shoes for kids be fun? Monkey-Toes makes adorable insect and animal themed hand-painted canvas sneakers. Designed by Jenny Ford, mom of two (with another on the way), all of their shoes are hand-painted in the USA with non-toxic paint. Matching socks are also available.
We were thrilled to review a pair of Monkey-Toes’ Glow Bug Handpainted Mary Janes -with glow in the dark eyes ($35). The canvas mary janes were absolutely darling and went with practically everything. They stayed in great condition, even with multiple playground visits. The best thing – my child loved having me put these cheery shoes on!

The Glow Bug shoes are a limited edition — so grab them while you’ve got the chance! Monkey-Toes offers many other terrific shoes, like their Wowie Cowie ($31), Buzzy Bees ($31), and Flutterflies ($31) — plus plenty of others. Their Rowdy Reindeer ($31) and Shivers the Snowman ($31) sneakers are perfect for the upcoming holiday season.

Think the Little Lady MJ’s look familar? Suri Cruise owned a pair (Oprah showed them off during a taping at Tom Cruise’s house in May 2008) – which was sent from Katja Presnal of Skimbaco.

Monkey-Toes are available online or from select retailers — click here for a list.

A Recessionista Shops for Fall Boots.

Fergie Carly Fergie “Carly”

It’s gray outside and the weather is getting cooler and as I get dressed this morning my mind keeps turning to boots. Fall is right here and that means boot weather. I am addicted to boots. Every fall, I add to my collection. I own more pairs than I care to disclose. Next up on my hit list are two of this Fall’s must have boots. The bootie – so cute and functional. And the sexy, tall, over-the-knee boot. Both are so versatile and can be worn with anything from jeans to skirts, leggings and dresses.

Let’s start with the OTK Boot. There are so many options out there – brand, price range, color, style, height, material, and I could go on. You can go flat with a comfy sweater and leggings, high heeled with a mini-dress. Then there’s boot length, many designers actually go way over the knee to mid-thigh, a great look if you are tall, lean and leggy. If you’re more petite, try to stick with the OTK boot that falls over the knee, between knee and thigh.

Here are some options for the recessionista, one who is able to stick to a budget and still dress stylishly. My goal under $200 a pair.

Jessica Simpson's Clancey Jessica Simpson “Clancy”

If you are looking for a casual and comfortable OTK boot this fall, Chinese Laundry’s Trust Me boot is a great and affordable option, retailing for $99 from Nordstrom. Another option, Fergie’s Carly also available at Nordstrom for $199.95.

For a more tailored look, I like Sam Edelman’s “Mischief” boots from Bloomindales, retailing for $180 and available in Rainy Gray, Brown or Black Suede. Another nice tailored boot is Jessica Simpson’s “Clancy” which carries the riding boot style and can be cuffed down for a slightly different look. It is available

Guess "Rumala"

Guess "Rumala"

at Nordstrom and retails for $197.95.

In the higher heel category, I like the Guess “Rumala” High Heel Over-The-Knee Boots from Bloomingdales. They come in Black or Mushroom and retail for $199.  Another choice, would be Two Lips’ Over-The-Knee Boot from Victoria’s Secret for $197.

On to booties, or ankle boots, a staple in any fall wardrobe. They were big last fall and are still strong in 09. They can be worn with jeans, skirts, pants, leggings, the list goes on. And if you thought there were a lot of options in the OTK boot wait until you start exploring the bootie. Booties combine with other fall trends such studs or ruffles (which are very big this fall). You can have stiletto, platform, peep toe, cut outs, flats, etc. They come in many different fabrics and color options. You can take a simple outfit and make it pop with a fabulous bootie. It is a great accessory this fall. With so many options it is very hard to narrow the choices. My goal this time, under $150. I find Nordstrom and

Hive & Honey "Truffle"

Hive & Honey "Truffle"

Piperlime to offer a great selection in this price range.

Here are some of my favorites. First up, the Truffle by Hive & Honey. It combines the peep toe bootie with ruffles a must have this fall. And very affordable at $89 from Piperlime.

For an edgier look, you can go with the N.Y.L.A. Isabel Bootie for $109.95. It is a great look combining cutouts and studs. Another edgier option is the Fergie Thief Bootie with side cutouts, shiny patent piping, a peep toe, and snake skin embossed mid-sole retails for $139.95. Both are

Report "Kline"

Report "Kline"

available at Nordstrom.

Some great everyday booties are the Mia Seductive on Piperlime for $130, the Sofft Orlena Bootie at Nordstrom for $149.95 (I love this brand for their comfort), and the Report Kline Bootie at Nordstrom for $124.95.

There are endless fabulous options out there and these are only a few.  Did I mention I love boots?
