Wii Game Review & Giveaway: Just Dance 2

This one’s all for Mommy:  recently released, we are having too much fun with Ubisoft’s Just Dance 2 for the Wii.  Mimick the figure on the screen as you dance to popular songs like When I Grow Up, by the Pussycat Dolls and Wham’s Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go with this Wii game.

Seriously, I’m smiling as I type this one – it’s so much fun.  You can play up to 4 players (provided you have 4 remotes) and see who can dance the best.  I’ve been having lots of fun doing this with our 10 year old neighbor and Nate (almost 7), both of whom can whip my butt pretty easily at just about any song in this game.

But don’t take my word for it – get it on Amazon for $37.99 (retails for $39.99)

Lastly, I have one to giveaway to a lucky Mommies with Style reader!  Just comment below to enter to win.  One winner will be selected at random after Wednesday, November 17th.

New to Wii: Gold’s Gym Dance Workout, plus one to Giveaway!

I just love the trend towards more and more active Wii games.  The latest that’s a ton of fun is Ubisoft’s Gold’s Gym Dance Workout, recently released on August 17th.  There are five different types of Latin Dance that you can exercise to on this game – Salsa, Samba, Cumbia, Reggaeton and Merengue.

But my favorite is the Cardio Boxing, which is so similar to some of the classes I take at the gym.  There’s over 30 songs (Lady Gaga, Gloria Gaynor & more familiars!) to dance and punch to and it’s not only exercise but it’s fun!    I workout regularly and this definitely gets my heart rate up.

My kids favorite are the mini-games – you can practice punching with a kangaroo in Australia or run with the bulls (and try and dodge the stray ones – I haven’t quite figured out how to master this one at all yet).  Everything on this game gets you moving, which is what it’s all about.

Get it on Amazon for $29.99 with free shipping.

Teen vlog: Sully likes Shaun White’s Snowboarding World Stage for the Wii

Amazon e-tailer Hubbagames has it listed for $34.79 (plus $3.95 shipping), which is better than the $49.99 Amazon and everyone else has it listed for.  If you’re looking to purchase, snatch it up at the discounted price while it lasts.

Highlights from our Wii Holidays

wiiMy kids received a lot of games under the tree. And you know my love of games. Some highlights (with quotes from the kiddos):

Shaun White Snowboarding: World Stage When Big opened this one my 27 year old sister let out a sigh, “I really wanted that one!” Well, too bad, so sad, Big loves this game and he’s not giving it up. This game isn’t just fun, its creative fun.

Players mix up fancy jumps and moves to score points. But the creativity comes in as you learn to create your own jumps. Says Big, “its fun because you can do tricks and practice so you can be a good snowboarder.” He doesn’t like to use the Wii balance board for it, and its only an option when you play. Middle says the balance board slows him down (which, probably, is a good thing to do tricks, but they’ll learn this in time.) (By the way, Big tells me this game requires Wii Motion Plus to make it really work for him.)

My sister’s jealousy over Shaun White Snowboarding didn’t last long because she was quick to open Just Dance. And she squealed. Seriously. I had no idea but this was on the top of her wish list. Score one for the big sister! She says its “great for friends to just laugh and have fun but also a great work-out.” (I wonder how the neighbor below her apartment likes this one.) Apparently, this was a very hot gift this season amongst the teens and twenties. They love to jam to the music and are playing it with their friends. I’ll have to remember this one for babysitter gifts for the future.

Holiday 2009: Hot Game Picks for the Wii

Although I definitely have some fun memories of my Dad playing Pong and Frogger with us on our first game system, an Atari back in the ’80s, those memories and those games seem pretty lame compared to the kind of comphrehensive game play for everyone that the Wii can provide.  (Not to mention the upgraded technology in the last 20 years, of course!)

We’ve had our Wii just shy of two years now and we really do have a game for everyone in our house.  We even have games we play over the Internet with my parents from their Wii down in Florida, which provides endless entertainment.

I’m starting this review out this way because I know not everyone has a Wii yet and I definitely recommend it for all ages.  If you don’t have a Wii, don’t just skip over this review.  There are games for toddlers, games for kids of all ages.   There are games you can play and games your parents can play.  Really!   There is truly something for everyone.

This year the price has come down for the first time since the system released – you can now get the entire system for $199.99.  Check your local stores – I do know they are limiting only one Wii per house at various stores.

Below is my list of Holiday Picks for the Wii this Holiday season:

Birthday Bash - Over 20 classic birthday party games including Pin the Tail, Hot Potato, Present Frenzy, Balloon Popper, Musical Chairs, Sack Race and many more.   It’s a lot like Carnival Games – mini games that are fun for the whole family.  $17.99 on Amazon.

Animal Crossing: City Folk - okay, okay you could call me a tad obsessed.  But read my review from earlier this year (“I think Mommy likes this game more than the kids“) to see why.  We adore this game.  Everyone in our house plays this from my 3-year-old on up through my 36-year-old husband; it’s definitely a family affair.  $39.77 on Amazon.

It’s also available for the Nintendo DS.  I bought it back in November for a road trip and it’s virtually the same game and same fun.  It’s called Animal Crossing: Wild World, and although it’s tough to find in-store (I tried 3 stores), I was able to order it off Amazon with no issue for $33.48 with free shipping.I would imagine this one’s adorable for a girl to play.  Pick a baby (boy/girl) and care for it by teaching it how to walk, talk and play.  Potty train them and grow them through the toddler years.  $29.99 on Amazon.

My First Baby Steps – A great game for girls.  Select a baby (boy or girl) and feed them, teach them how to walk and much more.  It’s cute – hours of simulation fun at a basic level.

And if you like that, check out Imagine’s Party Babyz where you can dress your baby and play games with them.  This one’s $14.99 (currently 25% off) on Amazon.

Family Fun Football – this game is described as “catering to the casual gamer,” which is alright by me as we have young kids in the house.  I look at this one as a good intro to playing football games on the Wii.  “Family Fun Football offers a coaching playbook that makes it easy for everyone to learn and understand the game of football.”  It’s $29.99 on Amazon.

Currently the#1 selling video game on Amazon is Super Mario Bros.   Santa may have to bring this one to our house as I have fond memories of playing the original on our first Nintendo when I was in high school.  You can have up to four players on screen with this game which makes it a fun all-play game for the entire family.  $49.99 on Amazon.

Samples of some of the above games were provided for review purposes.

8 Nights of Games for the Holiday Season

Each year I highlight some great games that we’ve found and enjoyed playing. We love games. We play a lot. This year, rather than just a brief explanation, I was inspired by my friend who is going with a theme for Chanukah this year: Family Game Night. Each night they’re going to open a new game and play. LOVE this idea. So, my suggestions for 8 nights of family game nights:

smatchFirst Night: Think Fun S’Match. We received this as a birthday gift (from Zareen, thanks Zareen!) for my 4-year-old and its been a great family game for all of us. Its Memory with a twist. Instead of just turning over 2 cards and hoping they match, you push a spinner and it tells you if you are matching category, number or color. My babysitter was hooked after playing one Thursday, so that night I knew we had to check it out.

cirkisSecond Night: Hasbro CirKis: This one was a sample and I was concerned that the kids wouldn’t enjoy it. Simply because it is for ages 8 and up. The 6-year-old found it, was intrigued by the box, and we opened it about a two weeks ago. I kid you not, we have played it nearly every day in the past 2 weeks. It is a challenging game of spacial relations with lots of rules. But if you have a little one with good spatial relations skills, like my 4-yo, this is a great game. You’ll definitely have to help out with score keeping and we did alter the rules a tad to make it less frustrating for the kids. This one is really fun for the whole family.

uno-115Third Night: Uno Card Game. This summer’s camp season was leaden with too many rainy days for my liking. It meant a lot of time indoors and not enough in the pool or on the tennis court. But the kids wouldn’t have known it. Each day they went to the game room and were introduced to new games. Apparently, the 6-year-old’s bunk loved Uno. C came home the 2nd day and asked if we could buy it. Fortunately, I had it in the gift closet and pulled it out. Since then, its become a game we play every sick day, every rainy day and, almost, every breastfeed when the kids are looking for something to do. Its one of the classics that every house needs. (And, as of this writing, its less than $3 at Amazon.)

wii-resort-115Fourth Night: Wii Sports Resort Apparently, this is a big seller for Nintendo. And I can totally see why. It has a lot of the classic sports games, like bowling and a twist on golf making it Frisbee Golf, but it also introduces about 10 new interactive games. I’m loving wake boarding and archery and the 6-year-old could play basketball and Frisbee for hours. The 4-year-old even gets into the game with Air Sports. It comes with a new Wii MotionPlus sensor, and you’re likely to need at least one more if you use 2 remotes.

gobbletFifth Night: Gobblet Jr. When we received this game 2 years ago it instantly was on the top of faves my list and its never faltered. Its a two-player game of strategy that we pull out very often. You’re trying to tic tac toe, can loose the spot you already played. Very user friendly and a great game for kids 4 and up.

sorry

Sixth Night: Sorry. Okay, I’m officially Sorry that I’m recommending this game to you. Because you don’t realize how long this game can last until you play it again. In fact, the first time we pulled out Sorry this fall we were shocked that we sat for over 30 minutes playing. But that’s the thing. All 4 of us sat and played. No one was distracted. No one threw down a card in frustration or lifted the board in a fit. Everyone played and played happily. Its another classic that belongs in every home.

snapSeventh Night: My First Making Words Snap. We only just took this out of the wrapper yesterday. Inside was a deck of 52 cards with phonics sounds on them. Your job: to make a match that spells a word. So that “ch” and “at” will match but “ch” and “sh” don’t. You can also play a Memory-style game with the cards. The 6 year-old was busy enough testing himself with the words he was making not to notice that the 4-year-old didn’t know his sounds and was just learning them with me. Its a great beginning reading game. And its under $5. Plan to hang some stockings? This is one that belongs inside.

zingo115Eighth Night: Think Fun’s Zingo! Its a bingo game with a zing. Instead of calling out numbers, the Zingo dispenser dispenses tiles with pictures on them (and the words). Players race to grab a word if its on his Zingo card. We started playing this one at age 3 (with help) and now the kids can play on their own. This one is a playdate favorite.

For what its worth, today I asked the 6-year-old what his favorite family games are right now. Without pause he responded Cir*kis and Sorry. His favorite current Wii game is Wii Sport Resort. The 4-year-old’s favorites were My First Making Words Snap and Cir*kis.

Cir*kis was received as a sample for review. Zingo, Gobblet, Jr. and ‘Smatch were all gifts. Uno and Sorry were won in a charity raffle. The 6-year-old purchased Wii Sports Resort with his own birthday money, though I pitched in and purchases the 2nd MotionPlus. And My First Making Words Snap was once sold at Precious Personalities (I opened my final deck yesterday taking it out of stock.)

Meeting Jillian Michaels

027

Here I am with Jillian - she was so nice

So I had a blast yesterday.  I headed up to NYC with MWS Writer Zareen to meet Jillian Michaels (The Biggest Loser, 30-Day Shred) and see a debut of her soon-t0-release Wii game, Fitness Ultimatum 2010.  It’s not yet available for purchase (you can pre-order on Amazon) - but it will be available next month and I have to say it looks pretty cool.

007

Zareen from MWS, Elizabeth from Party Planning Professor (love her!) and Moi

We had a chance to test it out and true-to-character, Jillian encourages and yells throughout the game.  The game is family friendly - as Jillian demoed the game she encouraged us to have our kids play as well.  (In the meantime, check out the 2009 version if you want to get playing now.)

What shocked me the most: how sweet and wonderful Jillian is!  I have to admit, I’ve never watched The Biggest Loser but I’ve heard she’s one tough cookie on the show.  She was down-to-earch and extremely genuine in person.

Many thanks to Beth from Role Mommy for organizing the event!

Chatting with Jillian (although have to admit, she's not laughing at anything witty I said!)

Having a Blast with Birthday Party Bash

wii-brithdaySomething’s gotta be said for a product when your almost 6-years-old is playing a game and turns to you several times to say “thanks.” As in, “thanks for getting this, Mom” and “I really like this game, Mom, its so fun.”

We came home today to a delivery of  Wii’s new Birthday Party Bash for about an hour now and it is the perfect set of mini games for preschoolers and young elementary kids. The idea is to buy the game and host a birthday party (up to 12 players can play.) The host can select from 10 themes (we like “Monster Party”) and the party is then matched with about 10 games (of over 20 party games) to play during the party. Or you can create your custom party with your favorite games. It even comes with birthday party invitations–all you need is 4 remotes and a real cake and you’re set.

Of course, we’re not having a birthday party today. But we’re still enjoying the fun. We’ve played almost all of the games at this point and my 5-year-old’s favorites are Pin the Tail on the Donkey, Sak Race and Slingshot Blast (which may be my favorite, too.)

When it comes to fun, new wii games, Birthday Party Bash is definitely taking the cake. (Pun totally intended.)
